The Fever at -Jacksonville.
Jacksonville, Sept. 25. Sunday's
northeaster was followed by a cold rain
and drizzle that continued throughout
yesterday and last night. This weather
is unfavorable for the sick, but it is cn-
i couraging to note that only five deaths
were reported yesterday. New capes,
however, still continue in abundance.
The report yesterday showed 113, of
which 85 are colored- and 28 whites.

Creat Preparations at Memphis
Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 25. A meeting
of a joint committee of the cotton and
merchants' exchanges and the city author
ities was held yesterday at noon. The
strict quarantine regulations which have
been enforced since Saturday were amend-
ed by the adoption of the following

Tabes to Cross tbe Channel.
Once more sugge-tions are in the air for a
postal tube between Dover and Calais, and
this time in a more detailed form. The idea;
is to suspend two tubes of about a yard each
in diameter by means of steel cables across
the Channel, forty yards above tho level of
the sea. The steel cables will bo fixed to
pillars at distances of about 800 yards, and
in each tubo a little railway will run, with
cars capablo of carryiiiir 450 pounds in
weight. No parcel of greater weight than
this will be taken, and the cost is estimated
at the modest figure of $3,000,000. It is also
proposed to run telegraph and telephone
