Back District Mall Carriers.
In many of the back districts of Kentucky
the mails are often carried as far as thirty
five miles by men who walk the whole dis
tance once a day. A local paper thus de
scribes one (4? those sturdy carriers: "Mr.
Paugherty is very accommodating to persons
living along tho line (he ought to be). He
will carry a saddle, beehive, pup, or even a
dog, if be is not too big, and ho is offered
enough. He will ride a horse through for
any one for a quarter, and carry the mail

The English Sailer's Grog.
English law carefully regulates tho sub
ject of the sailor's grog. Every ship must
carry a quantity of limo or lemon juice as an
anti-scorbutic, containing 15 per cent, of
palatable fruit spirits, that is, sound rum pf a
specifio gravity fixed by $bq statute', or sound
brandy of a quality similarly fixed. Th
board of trade tells how the grog shall bo
mixed. One ounce of the lime juice, is to be
mixed with ono ounce of sugar and at least
half a pint of water, and must be served out
