II Hill, author of "Hill's Manual of Social and Business Forms," has just issued another bouk entitled, "Hill's Album of 11 oraphy and Art." It is an elegant and valuable book, and is ouc that every family should haye. The book is sold on the installment plan so th.t evarybody c:iu get one and not miss what it costs. The Methodist genearal conference lias declared unequivocally in favor of "complete legal prohibition" as the pro per plan of temperance reform. So we advise all politicians, who wish the Me thodist vote to elect tnem, to cancel the contracts they have made with the saloons for the coming campaign, and begin to let it be understood that they are not so violently opposed to "aumtoary legisla tion" as they were a t-hort time ago. An Austrian chemist claims to have invented ft destructive iluid that will be more deadly in its effects than the fabled Yupas tree. He claims that this fluid when brought in contact with the Jiir after the explosion of a shell in whien it has been contained, is transformed into a gas, which being heavier than the air, descends to the ground killing all men and animals within its reach, and more over destroying iron, bronze and other metals, as well as setting all inflamabl things on fire. If this be the case, wars will be of short duration and strugetic ireneralship become a lost art. Arizona Citizen. MR. CLEVELAND'S FOLLY. Nobody donbts now that the "humilia tion" of Hill by the administration, which has recently been accompolished, was as deliberately and studiously contrived as was the scheme by which the same agency "downed" Randall. The acqueduct scan dal, to be sure, which was disclosed and developed by the republicans, furnised a convenient mask behind which Mr. Cleve land could work out his designs against the governor, but it appears reasonably certain now that without this aid means -would have been provided to destroy Hill's influence in the politics of New York. This task might not have been accomplished so early or 60 effectively as it has now been done, but that it would be accornpolislied in any event before the meeting of tte national convention is ex tremely probable. The feud between the president and the distinguished Pennsylvania democrat has been in progress for over a year. The refusal of Mr. Randall to bow to the behests of the administration on the tariff question was an offcusc which could not be condoned, and he was marked for slaugh ter. The patronage of the state was tak en from him and given to his enemy, V. IL Scott, who represents the twenty-seventh congressional district of the state. The fact that federal office-holders were Active in assisting Scott to organize the democratic convention of Pennsylvania a few days ago in the free trade interest furnishes the latest and completest evi dence of the administration's victory over Randall. It will strike the average intelligent person, however, that this Cleveland Kcheme to crush Hill and Randall is bad politics. Of course the administration has nothing to expect from the Pennsyl vania democrats, even under the most favorable conditions. A split in the party iu that state would simply increase the republican majority which was certain to le rolled up uudcr any circumstances. But Randall's influence is not confined to his own state, and it is outside that state which it would be exerted, if ut all, in presidential years. In 1834 the speeches which Randall made in New York un doubtedly won from the republicans of the state more than COO votes which, transferred to the democracy, made Cleveland president. Hill, too, did val iant service for the national ticket in his state in 188 i. The vote of New York in the coming canvas is even more doubtful than it appeared to be four years ago, with all possibility of aid for the presi dential ticket from the governor or the congressman out of the question. It is this fact which makes the administration assaults on Hill and Randal! the most conspicuous blunder, in a partisan sense, which Mr. Cleveland has committed since Lis inagguartion. Globe Democrat. . PROTECTION THE 31 OTHER OF INVENTIONS. The advocates of protection often refer to its stimulating effect upon those for whom its influence secures high wages, leisure, and-opportunities for education and advancement. The San Francisco Chronicle illustrates this argument by a review of the progress of inventions un der the free-trade regime, compared with the progress under protection: It becomes interesting, in view of the general concession that inventors piomote the public welfare, to ascertain under which fiscal policy they have been most numerous. As in another case, in order to institute a comparison between two epochs, we shall take the Iree-trade per iod of twenty-six years pior to 1 SGI, and the protettion era w.'iich began with that date. The total number of patents issued before the war was :i,tt08, while from and including 1802, and up to and in cluding 1880, there were 347,076" is&ued. The greatest number issued in any - one year prior to 18G2 wrs 4,1819, while in 1885 as many as 24,233 were issued. The annual average duriug the first period was 1.419; the average duriug the second period was 13,410. In 1800 there was one invention to every 0,4 10 inhabi tants; in 18S-"! there was one for every 2,500 All these figures tend to emphasize the fact that the faculty of invention lias increased in the same ratio that our man ufacturing industries have developed. Is the country ready to adopt a policy which in the very nature of things must diminish this mental mechanical activity which has done so much to increase the prosperity of the United States? The President and Mr. Mills appear to think so, but the great mass of the American people do not share their belief, and will do all in their power to continue the policy which has contributed so much toward making the United States famous as the most inventive nation in the world. The American Thoroughbred. Like his master, the America thorough bred horse is fast becoming a distinct species. Like him, too, the best strains may come from his English prototype, but the air of the western world has toughened his muscle, stimulated his nerve and made him distinctive. Judge Tourgee In 'Black Ice." Neither mind nor body can act health fully, if the blood is vitiated. Cleanse the vital current from impurities by the use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. This remedy purities the blood, recruits the wasted en ergies, and restores health to the debili tated system. Oysters at I eedine 'maA. oysters cannot bo kept without a knowledge of their-habits. They feed twice in a day of twenty-four hours, and then just at that stillness preceding the turn of the tide. At no other time, ex cept when feeding, do they open their moutlis. When taken out of the water they naturally attempt to feed at regular intervals, and as 6oon as their mouths are open the liquor is all lost, the air takes its place, and the ovster is covered with a thick coating of slime. This is the first 6tage of decomposition, after which the oyster is of no account. Seat tle (W. T.) Post-Ir,telJ;gencer. Eczema causes an itching so persistent as to produce not only sleiplessius?, but, at times, even delirium. Local applica tions will not remove the cause, which is impure blood. Ayer's Sarsaparilla cuns this disease by cleansing the blood and eradicating all humors. M hat a rrison Warden S ijs. Fraotioal Art for tjiriim Think of 500 girls paiating egg shells! These shells are suspended from windows and mantels by silken threads or they are used as breakfast or German favors. It is alleged that decorative painting is more remunerative than any other branch of art and is at the present time more popular in refined society than piano playing or dancing. Another fad U env bellishing the table china with portraits of the family and relatives. At one of the large art institutions I found that an other branch of remunerative art was the designing of quaint and artistic costumes not alone for the stage, but for indoor oc casions of fashionable persons. Boston Post. An Explanation. "What is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem now to be alilictcd i If you will remember a few years ago the word Malaria was comparatively un known, today it is as common as any werd in the English language, yet this word covers only the mi aniug of another word used by our forefathers in times past. So it is used with nervous diseases, as they and Malaria are intended to cover what our grandfathers called Biliousness, and all arc caused by troubles that arise fro ai a diseased condition of the Liver which in performing its functions finding it cannot dispose of the bile through the ordinary channel is compelled to pass it off through the system causing nervous troubles, Malaria, Bilious Fever, etc. You who are suffering can well appreci ate a cure. We recommend Green's Au gust Flower. Its cures are marvelous. THE SPIRIT OF THE PAST. The twilight hour dewcenda upon the land. And with a solemn moan the might deep Rolls on the beach and lulls ine Into nloep: And while 1 dream I feel a gentle hand Upon my arm, and, coming from the strand, A sweet, sad roice bids me to ever keep My purpose true and adds, "That ye may reap Ye flint must sow; tl by divine command." Then lot as from troubled sleep I wake, A silxnt form I nee, which front my gaze With Doixeleas steps retreats and fadeth fast Among the shadows where the white caps break Upon the shore; and through the misty haze I recognize the spirit of the 1'u.st. E. Almore Brown in Boston Advertiser. Not a Modern Idea. Records of building associations that is, societies for enabling subscribers to build or purchase dwelling houses date back as far as 1781 in Birmingham, Eng land. The number and cost of houses built depended upon the number of shares owned by the subscriber. The rents of the houses were paid to the treasurer of the building association. Lands intended for building purposes were laid out in lots, bid for by subscribers, and let to them on long time leases. Members paid monthly dues. A committee of manage ment was elected annually. The number of building societies now existing in Eng land is well on to 3,000, with funds and securities approaching 75.000,000. Cincinnati Commercial Gazette. Happy aim ttonie Loving Krenen, I assert that, to those who will look at us without bias, wo must appear in our true light the happiest and most homo loving people among modern nations. That provincial life in France is narrow, I have admitted, but what a very dove cote is almost every little home! If the time to be happy is now, and tho way to be so is to make all those around us happy, then are we the most enviable people on earth, for we put that theory Into practice. In what other land win you find so many households whose mem bers are of three or four generations? Parents and children cling together to the exclusion of all the world outside. Not a boy is brought up with a view to emigra tion. The thought of the young birds leaving the nest is dreaded. I know girls who have refused splendid offers of mar riage and preferred humbler ones because the latter gave them a chance of living near papa and mamma, and parents who have put themselves to any amount of in convenience to make room for daughters-in-law rather, than part with their sons. A French father would think you mad if vou told him that you left your family at V in the morning to return to them at 7 or 8 in the evening, as so many Ameri cans do; and that, on Sunday, your only day at home, you were too exhausted to enjoy your children's prattle or to take a walk with your wife. The little French provincial tradesman, who locks his shop door wlule he spends a joyful hour at din ner with his family, has come nearer solv ing the problem of happiness than the Anglo-Saxon jockey in the race for ducats.
