Geokge D. Meiklejoun, Walt. M. Seelet, Chairman. Secretary. It is somewhat amusing to see how persistently the Democratic papers keep up their efforts to prove that the recent Republican victory in Rhode Island doesn't disturb them in the least. But -when a person really doesn't care any thing about a thing, we have noticed that he seldom says so mere than once. Burlington Free Press. The republican national conveation will be composed of 822 delegates and it will take 412 to nominate a president. Each state will be entitled to representa tion as follows: Four delegates at large, two from each congressional, two from each territory and two from the District of Columbia, making 152 delegates at large, C50 district delegates, IS territori id and 2 from the District of Columbia making the 822 complete. It turns out now that 3Ir. Fuller, Mr. Cleveland's nominee for Chief Justice of the United States, has .1 Copperhead re cord of the most pronounced type and it is the tendency of the demcratic party to honor such men that should bring ic un der suspicion with all good, loyal peo ple. Its marked urefference fer confed erates at the seuth ond copperheads at the north, ought to convince anyone that the party itself is not what it should be as a national organization. Put your finger on a national appointment of the first magnitude, made by Mr. Cleveland, nuu nuu icij leu i:ALrJtiuua 111c iuui vidual preferred has either a good record as a confederate south or as a copper head north, during war times. The men in the democratic party who have good clean records as Unicn men during the war, must, as a rule, take a back seat Confederate and copperhead records are always at a premium with the democrat ic party. THE NATIONAL TALKERS. In the opinion'of Speaker Carlise, Con gress will hardly be able to adjourn be fore September. Five months have al ready passed, he points out, and nothing of importance has been accomplished; the present month will all be absorbed in the discussion of the tariff; June will be practically a legislative void on account of the absence of members at the Presi dential Conventions; and all of July and August will be required for the transac tion of business that can not properly be postponed to the next session. . The rea son fer this condition of things, Mr. Car lisle goes on to assert, is to be found in "the unwieldiness of the House, and the growing tendency of both sides to make it a field of partisan debate for campaign J of that body lor and neglect oi public intern might easily have prevented. The ate is certainly not open to criticism Oi that sort It has delt promptly with every measure that has come before it. If it has devoted a good deal of time to the discussion of political questions, it has not thereby caused legislation to be delayed in any degree; and the fact that such delay has occurred is chargeable en tirely to the democrats in the Ilo'use, who have preferred profitless talk te practical work. - When the republicans had control of the House the sessions were never pro longed in this foolish and discreditable manner. They attended to the public business with a well defined conception of their duty to the people and an honefct purpose to perform it. They never al lowed the appropriation bills to be kept back for five months, and never permit tod partisan consideration to interfere with tho progress of necessary legislation in any direction. If they were in power at the present time there would be no room for the kind of criticism which Speaker Carlisle makes. It is his own party alone that is to blame for a situa tion that he so justly laments and con demns. There has been nothing in the way of the easy and rapid treatment of all measures of public interest and im portance but democratic waut of indus try, intelligence and courage. Speaker Carlisle hinsclf is not wholly innocent in the matter. To some extent, in fact, h-j is directly responsible for the differ ent way in which the business of the ses sion has been delt with. He has suffered time te ba squandered in filibustering when he might have prevented it, and contributed in other ways to the general dilatoriness when his official duty de manded different action at his hands. He has it in his power now to shorten the session considerably by enforcing the rules and requiring the members to de business in a business-like way; but it is not at all likely that he will use his authority for a purpose so evidently con trary to the tastes and wishes ef his party associates. Glebe Democrat. A worn out society bella is like old mapra sugar. It has a certain kind of sweetness, but has to be laid on the shelf whea the new crop comes out. New Orleans Picayune The cowboys would like to have some good all around poet write a stirring lyric to be known as "The Cattle Hymn of the Re public" Of all thieves fool are the worst; they rob you of time and patience. Goethe. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are va rious, and statistics show conclusively that more persons die from disease of the throat and lungs thaa any other. It is probable that everyone, without excep tion, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to continue their ravages they extend to the lungs produc ing Consumption and to the head, caus ing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to continue will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with promptness; allowing a cod to go without attention is dangerous and may loose you your life. As soon as you feel that something is wrong w ith your throat, slice's German Syrup. It will gi ye you immediate relief. There are now CG0 students in Clafln university, Orangeburg, S. Max Eliot in Boston Herald. Milk a Cheap Food. A recent medical writer expresses sur prise at tha want or appreciation even among medical men of the real value of milk, in comparison with other articles of food, and, in the case of housekeepers especially, who frequently find it difficult to achieve as great a variety in articles of diet as is desirable, this artlclo is profuse In the facilities thus provided. In partio ular, it would appear that, so far as its nutritive value la concerned, milk is far from being understood, as compared with other articles of animal food. Again, there Is less difference between the econoro leal value of milk, beefsteak, eggs or fish than is commonly supposed. Thus the quantity of water in good milk is 87 per cent., in round steak 75 percent., in fatter beef CO per cent., and In eggs about C3 per cent. Now, from analyses made, it Is estl mated that sirloin steak, reckoning tho loss from bone, is as dear at thirty five cents a pound as milk at twenty-four cents a quart; that round steak at twenty cents a pound is as dear as milk at four teen cents a quart, and corned beef at seventeen cents as dear as milk at fifteen The result from these deductions seems to be that milk at even twelve cents a quart Is the cheapest animal food that can be used. -New York Tribune. .
