was commenced November 2, and when
1:510 foot were reached work stopped.
Instrad If gas a flow of mineral water
materialixed, the yield being fully 4,000
barrels per tiny. Notwithstanding the
gas failure ths people are delighted with
the result, as he water is supposed to
po.-;s-?ss curative properties for every im-a--i
uable disease.
Ancient Aztec Pottery Found.
K Paso, Tr.K., Jan. 19. For some
time past au'mnt Aztr.'C pottery has been
f-mi u l o:i the m3a back of Paso del
Xortc, in a district of country wliich,
o.ving to its extreme aridity, is very sel-d-in
visited, and still lei3 exi)iored. The
(ia ling of pottery ii said to point to tha
i-xistence in prehistoric timo-i of a pueblo
similar to that explored by Cashing and
th? llora.'nwiy expadition at L03 Muer
toia, in Arizona. A syatematio and per
severing siarch would probably lay bare
similar ruins in this vicinity. There was
a densa Indian population h(;rc when
C ibe. ide Vava pasaod through the coun
try soiii ;wherc about 1330, and after
ward Espejo fouud a big pueblo in 1581.
The history of these ancient pueblos has
never been investigated.
THE MISSOURI PACIFIC.

ly Extended Next Year
St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 19. Advices from
Xew York report the executive commit
tee of the Missouri Pacific railway comp
any as having decided to pmh to com
pletion all roads now under contract,
and that they will extend their line3 in
to several of western counties of Nebras
ka during the present year, building
sonic 300 miles of new road. The re
ported sale of the Nebraska Pacific rail
way the Missouri Pacific railway by Prop
er & Co., the incorporators and owners,
is confirmed, and that the same has been
turned over to Church Howe, the Mis
souri Pacific company's aent in Nebras
ka, with instructions to push the line to
completion. The road has surveyed
lines from Warwick Northwest through
Nuckolls and Webster counties to the
west line at Adams count', in Nebraska,
come seventy miles, and is only partially
graded. More surveys have also been
ordered and this line will no doubt be
rxti-nded west from Paulin, in Adams
county, to Kearney, a city of some 7,000
inhabitant, in Buffalo county; thence
uorthwest to Broken Bow, tiie principal
ritv in Custer cnintv.
Lamar Sworn In.
Washington, Jan. 18. The supreme
court of the United States sat with a full
bench to-day. Lamar reached the c.ipi
tol a little after 11 o'clock this morning,
ami proceeded to the justice room of the
s-uprenie court, where the oath of efiicc,
(ordinary modified oath), was adminis
tered to him in private. The judicial
oath was administered in public immed
iti-ly after the session was opened.
The small space reserved for the gen
end public was crowded with strangers,
but the space within the enclosure, re
served for the bar, contained not more
than the usual number of lawyers. The
chief justice announced the first proceed
ings of the court would be the reading of
the commission of Lamar and the admin
istration of the oath. The commission
was thereupon handed to the clerk, who
read it, after which Lamar read impres
sively from manuscript, the judicial oath
as follows: "I, L. Q. C. Lamar, do sol
emnly swear that I will administer jiutiee
without respect to persons and do equal
right to the poor and to the rich, and
that I will faithfully and impartially dis
charge and perform all duties incumbent
on me astasecUte justice of the supreme
court of the United States, according to
the best of my ability and miderstand
ing agreeable to th : constitution and
laws of the United States, so help me
God." lie took t!.e bible as he uttered
the last word and pressed it to his lips.
He was then clad in a flowing robe of
glossy black siik, the court and assem
blage arose, and ths new justice bowed
to his associates and then to the bar and
public, and took his seat in the chair of
th; junior justice at the extreme left of
the bench.

fund the War Tax to the North.
Wasuinotox, D. C, Jun. 18. In the
senate a bill was passed introducing the
charge for passports from if-T to !'. I. Af
ter a number petitions had b. en present
ed and bills introduced, the bill for n
funding the direct tax of liil was taken
up. The question was taken on the
amendment offered by Senator l-Miiu.nds
requiring all claims to be III- ( within s;x
years, and it was agreed t . S v i d
amendments of a verbal character m-ic
also agreed to.
Senator Berry offered an am-n-. intent
providing that no part .if tho momY col
lected from individuals shall b. n-tdned

Senator Vance offered an ;i:n .:td-n i t
extending the provision of th. bill t tin
cotton tax collection under 111 : law of
1802 and subsequent laws.
The amendment was rejected by a vote
of 48 to 10.
The Chauder amendment to provide
tlic payments be made only on judge
ments of the court of claims was also re
jected. At 2 o'clock the ediuationrd hill was
elisplaced as the unfinished business and
considerable of tho direct tax bill was
continued. The bill was then passed
yeas 48, najs 10.
The bill directs the secretary of the
treasury to credit each state and territory
and to the District of Columbia a sum
equal to the collections rande. therefrom
or from the citizens or inhaoitauLs there
of, or other persons under the dim t tax
of Aug. 5, 1801. It remits fill moneys
till duo to the United States under such
an act and it appropriates the amount
necessary for the reimbursement; the
sums collected directly from individuals
to be held in trust by the state for the
benefit of the persons from whom th' y
were collected, or th?ir legal representa
tives. The Blair educational bill was then
taken up and Senator Brown lh'.-n a!
elressed the senate in support of it. Ar
tcr speaking for about an hour and a half
he yielded for a motion to adjourn.
Senator Shsrman, from the committ e
on foreign relations reported an amend
ment to the deficiency bill appropriating
$50,000 to dafray the expenses of a com
mission to attend the international x
hibition at Melbourne this year. Refer
