Governor Larrabee of Iowa, in his biennial message to the legislature says that the $1,147,G30 asked for by various state institutions should be cut down one half. This is business. He reports the school-houses of the state at 12,441 and teachers at 24,075. Also a perma nent school fund of 4,187,894, with .302,78S acres of unuseel sc'.iool lands. No wonder Iowa has such a high graele of popular intelligence. He says the new capital has cost $2,871, C82. Lincoln Netck The Coming Live Stock Banquet. Hoof aud Horn. The next great event in South Omaha will be the first annual banquet given Wednesday evening, Jan. 18th by the Live Stock Shippers of Nebraska, at the Stock Yards Exchange hotel. A large body of representative men from all over the state and western Iowa will be thrown together. The annual election of officers takes place in the afternoon, and a very inter esting program for the supper anel even ing is proposed. Appropriate toasts will be ofTered and responses maele. The Hon. John A. MeShane will answer to the sen timent "The past, present anel future prosperity of South Omaha;" John F. Hovel, the superintendent of the yartls to "Their present anel future couelitiou." Daviel Anderson, 1st vice-president, one of the oldest shippers in the state, will give some reminiscences of the earli est shipments of live stock from this region. "The stock shippers anel stock growers of the state," will be responeleel to by sev eral prominent shippers from different localities. "Our own Nebraska," will be talkeel about by James Danly, of Ashland and Mr. Walton, of Genoa. Col. Savage will represent the liyc slock commission firms; Captain Meelay, of the Hammond Packing company, will squeal for the packers; Billy Wall work will bellow for the buyers in the yards. Mr. Eriou, of the Stockman, Mr. Mac Murphy, of the Ilonf ami Horn, and Mr. Jackson, of the 7ce, will snort for the press. Chas. Braelerick, of Milwaukee, and Col. Hooper will whistle for the railroads. The tables will be set at 8 o'clock by Mr. Briggs, the affable host of the Ex change, and first-class music is engaged. The number of tickets will be limited, so that strangers anel members from a tlis tancc can be accomoelateel by the secre tary. The Cypsy Baron. The Comied jQpera Company will ap pear at the Waterman Opera House titH evening, January ICtli. in Johann Strauss latest anel most brilliant musical succe "The Gypsy Baron," by the author o "The Merry War," Queei3 Lacellandker chief," Prince Mcthusalem" and otht masterpieces. The libretto is by Julius Selinitser who based the argument upon a novel by Moritz Jokay, the famous Hungarian poet, and tells a romantic story, blendiel witli Iiuinor ot tlie life of the maygar gypsy of the last century. The opera is divieleel into three act the first, the gypsy encampment, then ruincel castle, near the River Temcs, am' finally a scene in the outskirts of Vienna where the Hungarian troops are seen re turning in triumph from the war. Incidental to the last act is a march by 40 shapely female hussars, which ha been highly praiseel by prominent officer: of the National Guard. The costumes are from an original ele sign by Gaul the historical painter of th imperial opera house in lenna. 1 his l the largest company that has cvervisiteel us, and will be the musical event of the season. Burned to the Ground. This morning about fifteen minutes till seven o'clock, fire was discovereul in the house of Ansen Bukmayer, a Bohemian livinff in the third ward, wcet of the school house. Mr. Buktnayer arose a few minutes af ter six built a fire in the kitchen stove and returnee! to bed. His wile gettin up soon after, discovered fire mid gave the alarm. The flames were rapidly spreaeling and the family were driven from the house half clad. Mr. Bukmav- er saved his boots, overcoat and hat, but lost his trousers. Through the efforts of the neighbors most of the household gootls were saved. The third warel fire company was called. but after drawing their hose cart within about three" blocks of the fire abaneloncd it as the fire had to much of a start. Tac house was a onc-story frame build ing, main part being 14x24, with a wing 10x12. It is not known how the fireorig- inateel, but is supposed to have caught from the stove pipe.
