Washington. D. C. July 19. The
cabinet decided to take vigorous meat

importation of rags from all infected
countries for ninety days or longer if
necessary. It was also decided that

to prevent the landing of vessels from

CHOLERA INFECTED KAO REPORT DE
NIED.
Ottawa, Can., July 19. There is no
truth in the statement purporting to
come from Washington that paper and
rags supposed to have been collected
in cholera infected districts in Europe,
are being imported into the United
States through the Canadian ports.
United States importers should see that
necessary precaution is taken -before
shipment. The dominion cannot tell
what is in bales and the fault of not
taking necessary precautions must rest
with the United States authorities.
A PROHIBITION VICTORY.
Muscatine, la., July 19. The first
trial under the new prohibitory law In
this county resulted in a victory for the
prohibitionists. The defendant, James
Wier, a prominent saloonkeeper of
Muscatine, was found guilty on two
counts and fined S100 on each, the full
limit of the law. The case was fosight
inch by inch by the saloon men aud
was appealed to the district court.
Similar cases are pending against four
other saloon men. Wier openly detied
the law and has reopened his saloon
today.

Irongate, Va., yesterday, Thomas John
sou stripped his stepson aud tied his
hands to whip him. The boy escaped,
ran to the river and jumped in. John
son followed, the current was swift and
both were drowned. The bodies were
