PLATTSMOUTH, - NKI1HASKA. BEN WILL RUN. Chicago. July 16. Information has beeu received from close frienda of General Butler by B. F. Snivel?, "sec retary of the anti-monopolist commit tee," dispelling doubts regarding But ler'a candidacy for the presidency on an independent ticket, and positively, that he will run. Shively, who is at the Briggs house in this city, expressed today the most absolute certainty that liutler will be a candidate, with theeu dorsement of the greenbackers, anti monopolists, and probably the laboring men. Butler's refusal, at present, to make a public statement, Shively says, is prompted by a desire to first see what can be done by the convention of fcbor repiescutatives, to be held in Cui cago, July 30. Washington, July 1C The Star says: Tho impression seems to be that Ex Senator Wallace will be elected chair man of the national democratic commit tee. It is thought Governor Cleveland prefers Manning of New York, but the understanding is that he (Manning) does not want the position. lie has promised to devote his time to the can vass and to aid the committee to the full extent of his ability, but don't want to be the responsible head. From goot authority it is learned that Randall for bids the use of his name. He will not 6tand in Wallace's way. At Chicngo Randall wes ably supported by Wal lace, and it is said the former will do all he can to have the latter made chair man of the committee. WHAT THE NEXT PRESIDENT SAYS. New IJaven, Conn.. July 16. Ex Auditor, Edward McCarthy, a local democratic leader, who bolted Cleve land's nomination, received tonight a personal letter from Mr. iilaine, thank ing him for his pledge of support. Blaine's letter is as follows: Augusta, Maine, July 14. Edward McCarthy, Dear Sir: Accept my sin cere thanks for vour kind letter of con gratulation. I regret that I can make but this informal acknowledgment just now. I can question the right of no man or body to vote as they elect, but I will say that I am heartily grateful to have found new friends in your beaut i f ul city. With the best wishes, bt lieve me to be very truly youis, James G. Blaine The democratic managers are not a little puzzled by the unexpected atti tude of a considerable portion of the Irish element against the democratic ticket. At first they were happy in the belief that only the "dynamite" Irishmen who labor under the iniprts sion that Blaine's accession to the pres idential chair will be inaugurated by a vigorous TAIL TWISTING OF THE BRITISH LION were concerned in the revolt against the democratic nomination?, but the few days that have elapsed since the adjournment of the democratic con vention have sufficed to bring forth unmistakable signs of a not inconsid erable disaffection among the Irish, which is all the more surprising to the democratic managers, as it is largely based op that.powerful, and not easily to be neutralized factor, national prej udice. Avoiding altogether the Irishmen of Richelieu Robinson type, who !eireto have the tail of the British lion twisted makes them hardly good judges of one who should be the president of this country, a repor llr of the Times yes terday made it his business to sound the opinion of many of the Irish resi dents of Chicago on tne democratic ticket, an i found that the Irishmen are in ro mood, at least not at present, to putl off their coats for the election of the democratic ticket, The reporter's investigations were confined to people who were found in the down town streets and resorts, hut he conversed with men in all stations of life, and was careful to t . Ik only with people about whose affiliation with the demc cra '"c parly he nad no doubt. Many were democratic office hoiders, and for that reason no names can be given, as officeholders do not like " to appear in print when making state ments unfavorable to tha prospects of their party. An officeholder standing high among the Irish people ia this city and occu pying a position which gives him ex cellent opportunities to obtain correct information about the feeling of his countrymen, said, after having exacted promise that his name should not be divulged; "There is no use talking about it, tha Irishmen in Chicago and Cook county are largely opposed to the democratic ticket.
