PLATTSMOUTH,: NEBR ASK A At 10:40 Chicago time, convention was called to order by ex-Senator Bar- num, chairman of the national demo cratic committee. Prayer was offered by Rev. D. C. Mu regard, of the North western theological seminary. BAKNCM ON JIAKMOJY. The chairman said: (Jentlemcn of the convention, harmony eeenia to be the 8eu,iment of the convention. Ev ery one here seems saturated with a de sire and determination to nominate a ticket for president and vice president, which will be satisfactory to the north and to the south, to the east and the west; nay more, a ticket that will har monize the democracy throughout the union and insure victory in November Harmony prevailed in the deliberation of the national cauimittee. No effort wai made to nominate a temporary chairman in the interest of any candi date, but on the contrary one who shall preside over the deliberations of this convention with absolute impartiality la that spirit, and to that end, I have been directed by the unanimous vote of the national committee to name the Hon. Richark Ji. Hubbard, of Texas, for temporary chairman of the conven tion. As many as favor the election of Hon. R. IJ. Hubbard for temporary ch airman will say aye; contrary, no.' The Hon. K. U. Hubbard is unani mously elected temporary chairman of this convention. The chair appointed Senator B. F. Jonas, of Louisiana Hon. George T. Barnes, of Georgia, and lion. Abraiu S. Hewett. of New York, a committee to await uon Mr. Hubbard and con duct him to the chair. Gentlemen of the convention, I have the distinguished honor of presenting to this convention Hon. Richard B. Hubbard, of Texan, elected the abso lutely impartial temporary chairman of this convention. The rest of the temporary organiza tion having then been announced, Mr. Smalley a member of the national committee, offered a resolution that the rules of the last democratic con vention shall govern this body, except that in voting for candidates no state should be allowed to change its vote until the roll of the states hud been called, and until every state had cast its vote. THE WEDGE OF WAR. Mr. Grady, of New York, offered as an amendment the following: And when the vote of a State is an nounced by the chairman of the delega tion of such State, and is challenged by any member of the delegation, then the secretary shall call the names of the individual candidates from the State and their individual preferences as ex pressed shall be recorded as the vote of uch State. Iluil hi! and applause John 11. Fellows, of New York, said thit the convention of his State had dtcided that in complicance with im memorial usage in that State the senti ments of the majority should be first ascertained, and that having; been done the vote of New York delegates should thereafter be CAST AS A CSIT. The convention of New York haviug placed upon the delegates that trust, he questioned the risht of this conven tion to strip the New York delegation of th) rights thereby conferred. Such acion. would not pass without protest at least from some of the members of that body. John Kelly, of New York, advocated the Grady amendment. There were he eaid in the State of New York 72 counties, of which but 10 or 12 were democratic. According to the argu ment of Mr. Fellows the great demo cratic counties of New York (which would elect a democratic president if an opportunity were given to them) would be disfraucised. This was the principle which was nop presented, and he appealed to the sense and lib eralit? of the convention in favor of Mr. Grady's proposition. KELLY SQUELCHED. The general result was then an nounced as ayes 350, noes 445. The vote was then taken on the orig inal resolution offered by Smalley, of Vermont, and it was adopted. A resolution was then offered and adopted for the appointment of com mittees ou credential and permanent organization. A committee on plat form was also ordered and it was or dered that all resolutiomlir regard to' the platform be referred to that com mittee without debate. . . Mr. FcaacU, of . Misouri Bored W. COOK.
