C. A. Holmes, Chairman. John Steex. Secretary. Lincoln, June 20. 1881. Fresidext Abtiicp., his son and daughter, Mrs. Sheridan, Gen. Kucker, Mrs. Davis, and a party of friends num bering aboat fifty, attended the per formauce of W. F. Cody's ("Buffalo Bill's") troupe of Indians, Mexicans, and cowboys, who are illustrating at Athletic Vark life in the "Wild West." "Hakk ! from the tombs" is the sad, sad refrain of the great divided as they take up their mournful line of march for Chicago. However, we have it from the Omaha Herald, and the doctor seems to be very much in earnest too, that, Uncle Sammy will not respond. We can only wait and ?ee. The President's reasons for disap proving the Fitz John Poiter nonsense and wickedness are so sound in reason and law that we apprehend the friends of that gentleman will hardly bring the matter ip again. The Presidential sledge hammer did not leave anything of the deu.ocratic bladder. The disgusting theorists and college fools aroi.nd Boston who are now ex claiming :vaiDct Mr. Blaine for kcepiDg up the ti :i ".:iiu of his country wilh re spect t.i tlij States on the American Coniiui i.t tire entirely unaware that it was Jo!. u (uiuov Adams of Massachu celts who created the Monroe doctiiue, who wrote all the papers on that sub ject, ani- issued them in tbe name of James Jlo.siuf. - The Monroe doctrine is nothing but John Adams' and John Quincj Adams', and James G. Blaine is the upright successor of the founders of Ma.4chu-4ettg. The donkeys now paruditig iu Massachusetts act a- if ibej bad the bar sinister iu them and wxe ill-begotten. Gtn. COSDEN TO THE REAR IN ILLI NOIS. Bill Morrrison, old man Palmer and Bill Spribger had thi'ir cut and dried 'revenue only platform reported to the convention in which they modestly referred to their own achieve ments as revenue reformers in glowing terms of praise. Their platform had been reported to the convention, when Carter Harrison cumupon the ground with a proxy aud in a three minutes' speech kuocked the bottom clean out of tb(j'"sure thing those gentlemen bd prepared for the democratic party Illinois. This was the most ridiculous farce of the ui:tuy antics, democracy has "cut up" this year of IHSi. It 6hows two things; first: "Bill Morrison," 'Bill Spiinyer," and Company, have been lying about the sentiment of the democratic party in Illinois. It is not free trade. It don't care a continental for the vagaries these gentlemen have been parading in Congress as the dear est thought of that party in Illinois. It shows, in the second place, that al though Messrs. ilorrison, Springer and Company have the advantage and pres tige of congressional influences arouud them and back of them, that, Carter Harrison, the Mayor of Chicago, the man they have been abusing ever since be turned the Iroquois banquet up eide down, a little over a year ago, on this same question of lree trade, has more influence and strength among the Illi nois bourbons than all of these reve nue reform cranks put together. Car ter Harrison and his eale are supreme among the "Sucker" democracy, aud the Cobdeu reformers may just 9 well retire. MR. BLAINE AND THE RELIGIOUS PRESS- The aati-Blaiue organs in the reli gious press are now very much embar rassed with communications from dis- gusred subscriber?. Tho more liberal f thern print the letters and thrn ed ltotially express themselves 3 not gainst Mr. Biaina's private e.jorater. They are, however, si ill inclined to re- maiu independent as they call it. But if one thing more than another is shown, it is that thinking readers now adays carefully examine all that is said on both sides of a question and then de cide lor themselves. An editor has no power over intelligent readers except aj he deserves to have it from the power f his argument and the truth ot his premises. Following a few disgusted men like cosset lambs are followed is not for reflective miuds. Religious pa pers above all others ougnt to be truly independent. Hartford Evening Post. Yesterday the following appoint ments were made by the President: John A. Kasson, of Iowa, envoy ex traordinary and minister plenipoten tiary of the United States to Germany. Alphonso Taft. of Ohio, envoy extra ordinary aud minister plenipotentiary of the United States to ltussia John M. Francis, of New Yoak, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipoten tiary of the United States to Austria Hungary. Louis Richmond, cf Rhode Inland, minister resident aud consul general ot the United States to Portugal. Samuel H. M. Byers, consul general to Rome, Italy. Ransom C. Williams, consul general t Havana. Ward i'cAllisler. jr., of California, 1 U'i'.ed States judge, district of Alaska. Andrew J. Lewis, of Illinois, clerk of the United States court, district of Alaska. M. C. nillyer, of California, marshal of the United States court, district ot Alaska. Frank Sperry, of New York, associ ate justice of the supreme court of Da kota. , Seward Smith, of Iowa, associate justice of the supreme court of Dakota. John Jarrett, of Pennsylvania, com rnissioner of labor. Miner W. Bruce, register of the land office at Niobrara, Nebraska. It would be a fearfully thin dodge to put up the old gentleman in order to get some such fellow ?.3 Bayard into the White House. The latest scheme of democratic stales craft is to nomi nate Uncle Sammy with; Bajard as vice. Then if Uncle Sammy should gt there he is to resign on account of I hysical aliment and Thomas Francis is 1 o be tbe President.. This is smart, very smart; yet we can't see, in the transac tion, where the uold man" comes in for Lis margin on the deal. The Illinois democratic platform which brokf in two in the middle the other day owing to the pon- ..Aoitn Tlill'a MnrricAn anil I . . .11.. "It? Springer, was longer, BicKiier, siiner, and more hypocntieal than those of the barn burners and regulars in MS and '52. Its attenuation was only equaled by its porousness. The New York democratic delegates who have already arrived in Chicago say that under no circumstances will Tilden permit the- use of his name in the convention next week. Vital Question ! ! ! !
