A lew selections from the prominent
papers of that section will give our
readers a general idea of the situation.
The two strongest Democratic papers
i t G ' Tjjia are the A ugusta Chronicle
and Constitutionalist and the Atlanta
Constitution. The former s-iya:
"It the Democrats, reunited and pre
senting unexceptionable candidates,
cannot beat Mr. lilaine, they could not
defeat any one of the conspicuous Ke
publican leaden. Let U3 hope that the
common enemy ha3 made a mistake,
and that due advantage of it will be
taken at the next Chicago convention.
M stake or not, we will have trouble
enough to elect our men over those just
named at Chicago, and that fact may
as well be sta ed and relied upon at
onco. The campaign will be red hot,
and if we arc to win none but a first
clais statesman of incorruptible record
must be the Democratic standard
bearer. "With Western men, for twenty
odd years, the Republicans have tri
umphed." The Atlanta paper has a still more
striking utterance, and one which, read
between the liuet., makes uo conceal
ment of the admiration which it feels
for Mr. Blaine. It eays:
'The nomination of Mr. Blaine is
the best it could have made, and it will
will require all that the Democrats cau
do to bring about his defeat. Jlecog
uizing the nature and extent of his
popularity within the limitations which
we have mentioned, we are free to say
that there is no room in the campaign
lo2 any Democratic blunders, and no
place in the programme to accorumo
date the cipering and vaporing pro
elivities of certain Democratic cranks
who assume to lead the party, and who
have led it time and again from the
emergencies of hope to the certaiutj
of deiear.

cau party, and if the country is to have
another four years of Republicanism,
we believe Mr. Blaine will give more
general satisfaction than any other Re
publican, lie will at least fly the
White House and the State-House, and
there will be some conclnsion in that."

democrat-'"' papers in Texas, expresses
itself in u liardly less striking and sig
nificant manner, and rings the alarm
bells to wain the democracy in the fol
owing vigorous fashion:
The democratic party must be aware
that by nominating Blaine the republi
cans hav exhibited tho finest trump
card in their deck. It is of no use to
di-guise the fact; Blaine is a very
sirong mau, difficult to beat. lie has
the magnetism of the few select, who
stand head a.ui shoulders above their
fellow-men; his privato record is a pure
ono to the best of our knowledge

ing. The democracy should not under
