Brown offered the following amend
menttothe Utah bill: "That voluu
tary sexual intercourse by a married
persou with one of the opposite sex not
the husband or wife of such married
person shall be a cause and the ouly
cause for absolute divorce from the
bond of marriage in tho District ol
Columbia or in territories of the United
States and any other places, subject to
the exclusive jurisdiction of the United
Stages, out courts may in proper cases

ing substitute to the joint resolution
introduced by Senator Jackson, propos
ing an amendment to the constitution:
"Executive power shall be vested in
the president of the United States of
America. The president and vice pros
idont hereaf ter elected shall ho'd their
office for a term ot six years, but the
president shall not be re-eligible, nor
shall the vice president be eligible to
the office of president if hj ahull have
exercised the same in case of vacancy
therein."
A QUESTION OK CHINESE RESTRICTION.
The department -f state having been
informed that the Chinese government
proposed to enter u silk loom in opera
tion as an exhibit at the New Orleans
exposition, the question arose whether
the Chinese restriction act did not
prohibit the lauding of operatives on
the uround that they were laborers.
The question was referred to the treas
ury department and Secretary Folger
today informed the secretary of state
that. Chinese operatives be admitted
without molestation, with the under
standing that they will not remain in
the country longer than necessary for
the display of their exhibit.
Washington, May ?5 The Post will
print interviews with eighty-two dem
ocratic members of the house of repre
sentatives in support of the demand
that a clear, aud explicit statement ot
principles absolutely committing the
democratic party to the issue of reve
nue reform in the presidential canvass
shall be made by the Chicago conven
tion of July. Among those interviewed
are Carlisle, Morrison, Hewitt, Roseu
craus, Kurd, Slocum, Cox (N. Y.), Hoi
man, Buckuer and Blackburn. The
latter says they look to the convention
for a vindication of the contest made at
this session for tariff reforms.
Chicago, May 20. Preparations are
rapidly making for the national repub
lican convention, which convenes next
Tuesday Hon. John C. New and John
A. Morton, of the national committee
have been busy siuce their arrival in
giving instructions for completing ar
rangements for the press and telegraph
companies. The space for the press
being limited, provision can only be
made for daily newspapers and such
papers as require work to be done.
Representatives of such papers should
be sure to come armed with creden
tials from home offices. The Associa
ted Press is prepared to make a verbat
im report of the proceedings and lib
eral descriptive matter. The press will
be thoroughly supplied in the regular
way Headquarters of the sub-commit-
ee of the national committee are at
the Palmer bouse.
San Francisco, May 26. The Califor
nia delegation to the uatiocal republi
can convention at Chicago lelt on a
pecial tram today via the Centrul,
Union Pacific and Chicago & North
western. The delegates and party num

hundred excursionists accompany the
delegates. Receptions will be held
