This the larg est special premium ever offered in the State, aud the board asks for its general attention and competition: For the bc6t essay on music and pi ano playing: the best essay on house keeping; the best crazy quilt, not less taau two feet square; the best plain knitting; the bst fancy knitting; the best hand sewing; tne best darning. All the foregoing to combine one gen eral competition. Awards will be made under the fol lowing rules. Points considered in es oays: treatment of subject, composi tion, handwriting, brevity. The farewell ball of the season given by the T. A. M. club at the opera house last night, was undoubtedly the finest and most elaborate public bail ever given in the city, aud the club can congratulate themselves upon the fact of eclipsiug all former ellorts with one exception that the Her ald interposes, and that is the first of the two leap year parties, which; these columns give preference over all oth ers.
