New York, May 20. The great, mass
meeting of citiiens and business men
called to express the approval of the
ministration of President Arthur,
and urge his renomination for a sec
ond, term was held tonight at Cooper
Uuiou. A uioie orderly and inielli
gent assemblage was never before seen

hour later, when Cornelius N. Bliss, of
Bliss, Fabian & Co , called the meeting
to order, not another person could find

company as chairman of the meeting.
Winslow was received with applause,
lie characterized Arthur as a man of
the highest- integrity-, in every way
worthy of support. Men of all classes
were centering upon President Arthur.
He denied this was a class medting, and
asserted that it was a mass meeting of
all citizens. Every one felt the import
ance of having a guod condidate in the
present crisis, and l.e felt certain their
efforts would be crowued with success

the heartiest spirit of the meeting were
adopted.

assault said Mr. Beecher used to be
very much opposed to President Ar
thur but he bad come around and be
come a great friend of his aud that was
like Beecher(laughter). I am hereto
verify every word of that. I am there
fore a witness from the other side and
it is just like Mr. Beecher (and I hope
it will be till his death) that when he
finds himself on tbe wrong side to get
over on the other., (Long continued
applause). I am here not as a clergy
man, but as a business man. I have a
right to speak what I think on all ques
tions respecting the public weal and to
give loxib me!tk fviewsas I think will
conduce to the welfare of our Nation ;
if what I say conduces to the party's
good so much the better for the party;
if it does not all the worse for the par
ty. Applause This is an assem
blage of business men ;

nor monopolists or bloated bond-holders,
as we have been termed by I was
going to say by raving madmen, but I
will be charitable and call them ill-
natured men. I bold that the business
part of the community represents in
many respects the best interests of the
whole country. Businessmen perhaps
more than any others require a stable
government. They do not care so much
about policies because they can adapt
themselves to policies; buti they do
want to be able to look forward to a
stable and uniform policy of govern
ment. A morning glory can adapt
itself to circumstances, can climb up
around a piece of twine, or, like a
charming woman, .to an ugly map,
about a dry stick, laughter . But if
you are going every day to put in a
new etick. it will give up bye and bye.
