TENSION AOhMS. District Attorney Corkhill has writ ten a letter with a view of stopping the practice of dishonest pension claim agents, aud expresses the wish that all souliers or other persons huvius; copies or descriptive circulars from agents in this city, or kuowledge of any fraud u lent transactions on their part, to sen J him full information, to the end that cuch case may be put in shape by spe cial agents for leral prosecution. At torney General Brewster has promised his earnest co-operation of the depart meat of justice, and all its officers, says that many cases ot fraud are heart rending. Maimed and decrepit sold iers, widows and orphans pay their pit tance to agents, who merely file their applications to enable them to collect the money from their deluded clieu's. If the present law is inadequate to pre vent such transactions, congress should provide an efficient remedy. If noth ing else were accomplished by the in vestigation it would at least warn sold iers and their widows and orphau3 of their danger, and prevent in tho future, their being swindled out of their money, and it will vindicate honest agents from unjust suspicion. RAIL.KOAD OFFICIALS. Salt Lake, Oit. 26. This evening Charles Francis Adams and other Un iju Pacific directors arrived in Salt Lake from Idaho, where they have been inspecting the Oregon short line. They will inspect tho Salt Lake & Nevada, a branch of the Union Pacific, where they propose extending toNevad and Cali fornia at no distant day. . RAILROAD WAL. A freight war is prevailing between the Union Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande from the. Missouri river to SaL Lake. The latter road was the first to cut rates, dropping to fifty cents oa all classes o freights. The Union Pacific met it and dropped to twenty-five cents a hundred. The cut will probably not lat long, aud merchants are niakiDg the most of it. San FTancisco, Oct 22. A circular -.igued by all railroad freight managers of line3 west of the Missouri river, ex cept the Northern Pacific, has heeu ad :irosseJ to merchants on the Pacific coast to the effect that if the present rates continue to be cut by the North ern Pacific or if that road should off shippers rales lo wer thau those speci fied in special contracts, such reduction will be promptly tue'. by other line? no matter how low the Northern Paci fic might go. A circular was also drawn up addressed to local agents ot othrr eastern lines, requesting them to con fine organizations of excursions to their own line, as under the agreement the contracting lines would be compelled to oppose the excursions in every way. BUTLER MUST GO. Boston, Oct. 33. Th- following ad dress will be issued tomoirow by "old Hue" democrats: Without abating cur opposition to tha political views and methoJs ol the republican party we believe the democratic success in the future can- be neither deserved or achieved unless we free ourselves from the charge of supporting candidates who have lowered the standard of political morality. We appeal to your pilrioiism and sober common sense to opnose the re-election of B. F. Butler. Caring nothing for party or principles, he subordinates every public interest to his own ajgraudizemeat, and should he be again elected the democratic party of Maschusetu would be held responsible for his administrative acts and eccentricities of the past and fu ture, while no responsibility attaches itself to us for any acta of Mr. Robin son.' Such being our deiief we cannot hesitate to declare that- w intend to do all that may be in cur power to secure the defeat of Butler, and we urge all democrats to Join with us in such an action.
