As the result of furthur deliberation
ou the subject, and in accordance with

aud officers, it has today been decided
that General Hancock shall remain in
command of the division of the Allan
tic, with headquarters at New York,
(icueral Schoilohl will take command
of the Missouri, with headquarters at
Chicago, ami (Jtnerul Pope will suc
ceed the last named in the command of
the Pacilic division at Sanfrancisco.
General Auger succeeds Major General
Pope in command of tho department,
with headquarters fat Fort Leaven
worth. Brigadier General It. S. Mc
kenzie will succeed General Auger in
command of the department of Texa?.
The department of the south has been
consolidated with tho department of
the east, Major General llanctck in
command.
General Sherman will, on November
1, repair to his home at St. Louis', to
await his retirement. The general will
be attended prior to Iu3 retirement by
those of his aids de camp whom he
may designate to the adjutant general.
M j or General Hancock was offered
the command of the division of the
Missouri, but he declined it, prefer
ring to retain his present command.
His letter of declination was received
at the war department today.
INVESTIGATION.
Surgeon Stone of the marine hospital
service, stationed at Saiamat, been or
dered by the surgeon general to pro
ceed to BrentoD, Alabama, to investi
gate th'; alleged epidemic at tbat plu'j..-.
The Louisiana state board of heaih has
been requested to send a competent
inspector to act with Surgeon Stone in
the investigation.

The President has appointed Jacob
Wheeler collector of internal revenue at
Springfield, Illinois, vice John W. Hill,

COURT MARTIAL.
A general court martial meets at

the trial of First Lieutenant Charles
E. Ilargous, of the Fifth infantry,
charged with having duplicated his pay
accounts.

yard was received today reporting that
the last case of yellow fever had been
discharge! and that there were no signs
of any new cases.
Mobile, Oct. 13. Two deaths from
yellow fever at Brentcn this afternoon.

cases were reported today, Femald
nurses are needed.
Robertson's cast.
A general order has ben issued pro
mulgating the action of the President
upon the findings and sentence of the
court martial in the case of Lieutenant
ltobertson, of the First cavalry. The
sentence was that Lieutenant llobert-
son be suspended from rank and com
mand and be confined to the limits of
his post for the same period, aud be
reprimanded in general orders. I he
proceedings alone of the courtare ap
proved by the president. The findings
and sentence are disapproved aud Lieu
tenant Robertsou is relieved from ar
rest aud ordered to return to his proper
duties. In the order promulgating the
above Secretary Lincoln writes as fol
lows: "No assent can be given to the
demoralizing idua which teems to be :

it, and he will be more careful in the
future to avoid a violation of tho sanc
tity of his official certificate, trusted as
being made on the houorof an officer
and a gentlemcan.

of the Northern Pacific, has partically
arranged for the construction of a num
ber of steamers of unusual heavy ton
nage and great speed to operate in con
nection with the Northern PaciGc from
Superior City to Duluth to Buffalo,
and by this means to over come the
cost of transportion grain from the
line of that road by the way of Chicago
and thence east. It is also asserted
that Villard interests have been quietly
obtaining control of tha Xew York &
vv est nore at iiunaio, thus giving
them, during the season of navigation,
a through freight line from the Pacific
coast to the east.

fication of the board of directors, the
proposition from Drexel, Morgan &.
