Mr. McElwaiu, who came in from
the west last uight, says he traveled
for half a day where the snow was six
inches deep on the level. This was on
the western division of the Union Pa

of very fine appearing apples, sound
and in excellent condition was received
by Hargreaves yesterday. These ap

are choice specimens or Nebraska's

The Lincoln State Democrat sports two
roosteis, one crowing for the Ohio vic
tory and the other the expected presi
dential victory in 1884; since we come
to think of it, its all right, just now is
doubtless the only time a democratic
fowl can afford to crow over the '84
election. '

On Friday, October 5 th, 1882, af

During his last illness everything
that aiiection could suggest or ample
means procure to smooth his remain

have been better known oi more ac

positive in his views on all questions,
no neighbor ever stood long in doubt
about which side of a question Wm.
II. Reed would take. Identilied

Horn in Hartland Connecticut, De
c-ember 10th, 1810, his father moved
to Ohio in 1818. In this state at the
age of eighteen j-ears, in connection
with Joshua R. Giddings. Ben

cu at me nrst, auoimon canvass ever
made, they stumping the district for
IIon.Jas.A. Birney, the candidate
for president on that ticket.
In 1SG4 Mr. Reed moved to Iowa,
where lie resided until lSoV when he
came to eeping Water, and has
been a resident of Nebraska ever
since- taking part in lier uaily legis
lative struggles, capitol removals and
enduring all the inconveniences,
struggles, honors 'and glories that
belong to the pioneers of a new and
rapidly growing young state.
From 1859 until the tine of his
death Mr. Reed's history will be
most intimately connected "with this
town aud this county. Two years
after his arrival, in 1S61, he complet
ed a small 'mill on the site of the
present tine stone structure, now
occupied by S. Clinton, Esq. In
18GG, the present stor.e mill was
completed and was owned and run
by Mr. Reed and his sons for some
years before it was resold to other
parties. "
In his religous life Mr. Reed was
as pronounced as in his political
views, and was a member of the con
gregational church from his boy
hood, and always a leader in every
moral as well as political reform.
Living among us, raising his family
here, known to each aud every resi

life it is no wonder that his funeral
was attended by a concourse of neigh

church and extended for a distance
about the sacred edifice
The funeral sermon was preached on
Sunday last, by Rev. Mr. Campbell, of
the Congregational church of Waverly,

Among the able men who make up
our county ticket it affords the Repub
lican pleasure to give its unqualified en
dorsement of J. C. Eike: .bary, for the
otfice of sheriff. Two ytars in the ca
pacity of deputy sheriff of thi3 county,
added to his splendid natural qualifica
tions for this office, renders Mr. Eiken
bary, next to the present incumbent,
without question, the best qualified
man for tbe office in the county. And
these are not the only recommendations
possessed by the candidate. Hi9 per
sbnal popularity among thosa who
know him best is abundant evidence
of his moral character and standing.
Cast your vote for him and help elect a
capable and honest man. Weeping

State's Attorney.
The Walters combination delighted a
fair audience at the opera honae last
night In their rendition of Scott Mar
ble's best comedy "Statea Attorney
Those wh went to hear John Dillon,
were surprised to find other attrac
tions of as much merit and interest al
most as the acting of Mr. Dillon. True,
Mr. Dillon, as Pilgrim Hoggi, is a p
cuuar character mat it sccui no one
could personate no happily and per
fectly as Mr. Dillon; he kept the audi
ence in a roar of laughter from the
time he stepped ou the Ht age, until he
bowed himself into his "capacious of.
flee." Mrs. Walters, as the jolly school
mam" captivaLed the audience, in her
independent, girliah maimer. Mr. Mc-
Veagh as the old honor bright, bluffy
miner, was very good, his personal ap
pearance adding much to th correct
portrayal of the character. All in all,
we venture no audience has let t the
opera house after the close of an enter
tainment this winter, that was as well
pleased as the one iu attendance last
night.
The democratic county convention
convents today at Louisville. A large
crowd of the democratic leaders left
this morning for the launching of the
democratic boat, preparatory to a trip
up Salt Creek. We noticed in this
crowd, Bro. Sherman, wearing his nc
customed smile and lean id ' heaviiy
upon a clumsy looking cane. Ed Ruff-
ner was on hand.", hut he too was com
pelled to use a walking stick, but when
we saw Bio. Draper, the father of 'an-
timonop democracy" iu Can's c uuty,
also limping and carrying a cane, we
wcie compelled to believe something
very peculiar had happened, but
whether the boys had been taking part
in the Iowa campaign, or were trying
to impose on the good people of Lou
isville and get their dinner for nothing
on the ground of being cripples, we did
not learn.
The balance of the crowd was comj
posed of such men as James Patterson,
F. E. White, Jerry Hartmau, George
Edgerton, John Blake, M. A. Hartigan,
Will Cushiug, C. Brcckenfeld, W. 1).
Jones, Dr. Wiutersteen, J. Vallery Sr

under the able leadership of F J Sibley
of this city as G. W. C. T. The rec
ords show a gain of 24 lodges and over
1,100 members during the p3t eight
months. .
An effort was made by Keens, ot

but it was triumphantly endorsed by
the Grand Lodge. A test vote for G.

votes against.
The following officers were electee:

G S ol J T Rey George Scott, Sut-

The real struggle of the session was
made by F G Keens of Kearney, to
capture the delegation to R W G Lodge.
Letters were written to various parts
of the State and everything done to
make the order staad by him. 1 he re
sult for first representative was F J Sib

again for second representative and

The plans lor an aggressive campaign
were perfected and the fight for prohi
