The Journal says 500 feet of track was laid yesterday, and that all of the material is of the best quality. Mr. McElwaiu, who came in from the west last uight, says he traveled for half a day where the snow was six inches deep on the level. This was on the western division of the Union Pa cific. A large shipment from Plattsmouth of very fine appearing apples, sound and in excellent condition was received by Hargreaves yesterday. These ap ples were ftrown in Cass county and are choice specimens or Nebraska's fruit product. Lincoln News. Mr.G.Itasgorshek returned yesterday from a week's visit in Connecticut. He says business is very good in the east, at the present time, they paying better prices tor all kinds of labor than is paid iu the west. The Roosters that so handsomety or nament the pages of our democratic exchanges, these dajs, are very pretty and serve to show up in good style what would otherwise be a very dull, prosaic page. The Lincoln State Democrat sports two roosteis, one crowing for the Ohio vic tory and the other the expected presi dential victory in 1884; since we come to think of it, its all right, just now is doubtless the only time a democratic fowl can afford to crow over the '84 election. ' The Elzevir club held a very pleas ant session last evening at Mrs. D. A. Campbell's. The topic for the meeting nest Friday evening is Longfellow's Miles Standisb," and the place of meeting, Mrs. J. P. Young's. The com mittee to report topic for the meetinir following consists of Prof. Druinmond, Miss "Wordcu, Mrs. J. L. Stoue. This has been a very busy day with our merchants, tbe town has been full all day long with farmers buying their Fall supply of goods. Not fciuce last winter have we seen so many teams in town from the county, maybe business will be Letter for a while, one thing is certain, an improvement is not impos sible. Don't allow the accumulation of Dandruff, when it can be so easily prevented by the use of Ayer's Uir Vigor. Lat week the daily IIeualu noticed tin; death of our old and esteemed fel low citizen, Mr. William H. Reed, of Weeping Water, but owlug to lack of data we were unable to speak of our old fellow citizen as fully as we wished the following obituary from the Weep ing Water Republican, will bo lead by our old citizens with iutcrcht, and in an appropriate notice of an esteemed citi zeu who has lived aud labored in our midst for hdf a century and who in pu-iing away leaves a good name be hind him' which is a consolation and a comfort for those who loved him most and ho will mo-t mias Ids cheerful, kind presence and wne counsel. OlilTL'AUY. On Friday, October 5 th, 1882, af ter a lingering illness, William II Reed, well known throughoit Cass county, breathed his list, at his home one mile north east of this plac During his last illness everything that aiiection could suggest or ample means procure to smooth his remain ing days and stay the dread sum mons was done. Few of our citizens have been better known oi more ac tive in the affairs of state and county th an the deceased. Pronounced aud positive in his views on all questions, no neighbor ever stood long in doubt about which side of a question Wm. II. Reed would take. Identilied wiin tne earnest endeavors of our people to overthrow the cause of sla very, ue may oe said to Have been a contemporary of those daiing spirits, . . who nrst Hung down the gyuntlet of opposition to that party which long fought with ballot and bullet to man- tain the supremacy of the slavehold- ing aristocracy ol this country. Horn in Hartland Connecticut, De c-ember 10th, 1810, his father moved to Ohio in 1818. In this state at the age of eighteen j-ears, in connection with Joshua R. Giddings. Ben Wads and an older brother, he assist cu at me nrst, auoimon canvass ever made, they stumping the district for IIon.Jas.A. Birney, the candidate for president on that ticket. In 1SG4 Mr. Reed moved to Iowa, where lie resided until lSoV when he came to eeping Water, and has been a resident of Nebraska ever since- taking part in lier uaily legis lative struggles, capitol removals and enduring all the inconveniences, struggles, honors 'and glories that belong to the pioneers of a new and rapidly growing young state. From 1859 until the tine of his death Mr. Reed's history will be most intimately connected "with this town aud this county. Two years after his arrival, in 1S61, he complet ed a small 'mill on the site of the present tine stone structure, now occupied by S. Clinton, Esq. In 18GG, the present stor.e mill was completed and was owned and run by Mr. Reed and his sons for some years before it was resold to other parties. " In his religous life Mr. Reed was as pronounced as in his political views, and was a member of the con gregational church from his boy hood, and always a leader in every moral as well as political reform. Living among us, raising his family here, known to each aud every resi dent of the vicinity in all his walks of life it is no wonder that his funeral was attended by a concourse of neigh bors and friends that overflowed the church and extended for a distance about the sacred edifice The funeral sermon was preached on Sunday last, by Rev. Mr. Campbell, of the Congregational church of Waverly, and the body deposited ii Oikwood Cemetery, Ihus passes from our midst aa ex emplary man, an honest citizen and adearly beloved friend. The Re publican mourn 3 with fri nds of the deceased aa truly and faithfully as bis older friends and neighbors and ex tends the sincerest sympathy to the sur viving members of Mr. Reed's family, feeling how empfcv words must De at such a time, yet prompted to render such consolation as our high regards tor the character of the deceased de mands. First Annual Meeting. The Nebraska Unitarian Association will hold its first annual meeiing in Lincoln, Nebraska, Oct. 30 aad 31, 1SS3. Believing that the time has come for a united effort, on the part of all per sons in the Missouri Valley, who be lieve iu working together for freedom, fellowship and character, by the meth od of religion, we, therefore, who have united ourselves together to emphasize righteousness, and to push forward re ligious progress, urgs upon all, of what ever name, who are in general sympa thy with our liberal religious ideas and methods, to meet with us in open con; fereuce. Accommodations for a limited num ber have already been s; cared and we hope to arrange for the entertainment of all who may attend. Reduced rates over ull railroads cen tering In Lincoln will be secured. All persons attending will address Rev. E. Powell, Beatrice, Xeb., as soon as possible. On and after Oct. 26, ad dress Lincoln, Neb. Tnos. L. Kimball, President. Exocu Powell, Sec'y. Among the able men who make up our county ticket it affords the Repub lican pleasure to give its unqualified en dorsement of J. C. Eike: .bary, for the otfice of sheriff. Two ytars in the ca pacity of deputy sheriff of thi3 county, added to his splendid natural qualifica tions for this office, renders Mr. Eiken bary, next to the present incumbent, without question, the best qualified man for tbe office in the county. And these are not the only recommendations possessed by the candidate. Hi9 per sbnal popularity among thosa who know him best is abundant evidence of his moral character and standing. Cast your vote for him and help elect a capable and honest man. Weeping Water Ren, An elegant line of wedding and invi tation stationery just received; aloe callin-j cards, in lr?tv?t styles. State's Attorney. The Walters combination delighted a fair audience at the opera honae last night In their rendition of Scott Mar ble's best comedy "Statea Attorney Those wh went to hear John Dillon, were surprised to find other attrac tions of as much merit and interest al most as the acting of Mr. Dillon. True, Mr. Dillon, as Pilgrim Hoggi, is a p cuuar character mat it sccui no one could personate no happily and per fectly as Mr. Dillon; he kept the audi ence in a roar of laughter from the time he stepped ou the Ht age, until he bowed himself into his "capacious of. flee." Mrs. Walters, as the jolly school mam" captivaLed the audience, in her independent, girliah maimer. Mr. Mc- Veagh as the old honor bright, bluffy miner, was very good, his personal ap pearance adding much to th correct portrayal of the character. All in all, we venture no audience has let t the opera house after the close of an enter tainment this winter, that was as well pleased as the one iu attendance last night. The democratic county convention convents today at Louisville. A large crowd of the democratic leaders left this morning for the launching of the democratic boat, preparatory to a trip up Salt Creek. We noticed in this crowd, Bro. Sherman, wearing his nc customed smile and lean id ' heaviiy upon a clumsy looking cane. Ed Ruff- ner was on hand.", hut he too was com pelled to use a walking stick, but when we saw Bio. Draper, the father of 'an- timonop democracy" iu Can's c uuty, also limping and carrying a cane, we wcie compelled to believe something very peculiar had happened, but whether the boys had been taking part in the Iowa campaign, or were trying to impose on the good people of Lou isville and get their dinner for nothing on the ground of being cripples, we did not learn. The balance of the crowd was comj posed of such men as James Patterson, F. E. White, Jerry Hartmau, George Edgerton, John Blake, M. A. Hartigan, Will Cushiug, C. Brcckenfeld, W. 1). Jones, Dr. Wiutersteen, J. Vallery Sr Dr. Wallace and iolbers. The following is the ticket nomi nated at Louisville this afternoon as far as could be obtained : For county treasurer. Will dishing. The annual session of the GrauJ ) Lodge of Good Templars ot Nebraska, closed at Crete laBt night. The order has made a grand advance under the able leadership of F J Sibley of this city as G. W. C. An effort was made by Keens, ot Kearney, to defeat the administration, but it was triumphantly endorsed by the Grand Lodge. A test vote for G. W. C. T. standing 67 votes for and 37 votes against. The following officers were electee: G W"; C T J F Sibley, Lincoln. G W C James E Morrison, Platts mouth. G W V T Miss Anna M Saunders, Unadilla. G W T John E Hopper, Fairfield. G S ol J T Rey George Scott, Sut- W W S M Weaverling, Beatrice. The real struggle of the session was made by F G Keens of Kearney, to capture the delegation to R W G Lodge. Letters were written to various parts of the State and everything done to make the order staad by him. 1 he re sult for first representative was F J Sib ley 63, F lv Keens 30. Keens ran again for second representative and George Scott recorded 64 to Keens' S3. The action of the representative to R W G Lodge at Chicago, was en dorsed. The salary of G W U T was fixed at $1,200 and G W S at $250. The plans lor an aggressive campaign were perfected and the fight for prohi bition will be.hot during the next year. The Grand Lodge adjourned to meet in Lincoln on the second ;Tuesday in October, 1884. The order in Nebraska was never mere thoroughly united than at present and in splendid condition to make a grand record during tne year. Lincoln News. Bed kock prices.
