'1 HIS season has seen some very goo 1
work done in Piattomouth in the line
of city improvements; the most notable
being the building of the Fifth street
culvert and the grading, bridging and
opening ol Main strtet west to the
city limits. Street commissioner Mc-
Cann has done much good work in
other parts of the city and the streets
and walks were never iu better condi
tion for the winter months. There yet
remains on the fifth blreet work, the
tilling at the new culvert which should
be done at once.
The republican nominees for the

down, because their ticket is a strong
one, and expect an election without
work. There is going to be a lively
opposition this fall, and it will not be
centered , ou two or th:ce men, but on
the republican ticket entire. The
llEKAl.D knows this to be a tact, and
the candidates will find that the Cam
paign will need much earnest, careful
attention, aud the republican vote of
this county must be at the polls to in
sure the election oi tue rupuuiicau
Today the long campaigns in Iowa
and Ohio end with the election. Yes
terday reports fiom nil sources Beem to
leave little question but that the repub
licans will carry both States by koou
substantial majorities and elect tho
legislatures. In Iowa the question
at issue have been prohibition and pro-
tection. The former has ueiracieu iu
measure from the republican strength,
and the latter has brought strength to
the uarty. The bitter tight made by
the allied forces of the democarts una
greeubackers lor the leu'ulature has
alo had its iffrct in the campaign;

would elect their ticket by a majority

In Ohio the campaign has undergone
a radical change in the last mouth by
the active work of the ?ioMbitionist.

some of the most important criminal
cases iu the btate among them being
the celebrated Dr. St Louis case which
went through the supreme court but as

by the Attorney General. These papers
