Billy Mostin was arrested for as sault aud battery and taken before Judge Pottenger, who fined him $5 aud costs the Mayor, however, remit ted the fine. Mr. Hagameier the German tailor attracted considerable attention on the street ye-terday with a more than or dinarily hatidsome pet cau try, winch he Carrie I with him, it flying about him iu a friendly manuer. We see from the Republican ticket printed iu the columns of the Weepiug Water Eal- that the candidate for coro ner is one P. T. "The stone which the builders re jected, afterward became the head of the corner," or words to that effect. When M. I. lieese was defeated here I .-fcver.il yerrs ao, tor city clerk, his friends little thought they would have the opportunity of helping to elect him to the pupienn bench. S. P. Vanatta, Esq ..very ably as well as earnestly rnsi8ted on Cass c.un ly being qitably dealt with before the Judicicial Convention, at Lincoln, the other day, and what is more creditable, he carried his point. The chances are that it will be a cold day when Cass is sold out again by a Central Committee. While Messrs Patterson, Smith aud Murphy were in New York City among ihe points of interest that they visited was (.ioveruor's Island, where the trio had a pleasmt interview with General HaucocK, who, although on the eick ist, could not retake a visit from Ne braska guests. The General eitertain td them for fifteen or twenty minutes, and recounted his advent P.rcs years ago on the Blue river, in Nebraska, which was then inhabited by Indian warriors. Fne general recounted au adventure with Indians on the Blue, where Beat rice now stands aud acknowledged the wouderful chauges that had taken place iu this state since that time. Our particular informant says that Mr. Pat terson stepped very high after his visit to the General, and pronounced the visit to the Island the verv be3t of the whole trip. The state university since it went into the medical business, has fitted out one department with a full corps of !-rofessors that will view the ill of tnimmtc throusrh the "renular" or o!i school" horoscope; aud we now learn the homeopathic fraternity have been about provided for, and that a number of students a-e already prom ised to attend that branch of the medi cal school. We are of the opinion that the state funds might have beec better m ployed than they will bt in pitling couple of machines to work grinding out medical graduates from the uoi voraitv. A medical education is one that ought to bo sought for iu a college devoted solelv to the instruction of fiat niio -cience. evun then, & good ma iv or sticks get through and inflic; t en g rives upon an igDoraut and trust- ul uuUic. In the outset we hazird the opinio.! that the medical depart njt of the university will fall far i short of ibv ot&er departments. A Serious FalL Shortly after 9 ochclrthla mornluir, John C. Livioxtone, a bricklayer who win engaged at work on tho building on Douglas, between "Fifteenth and Six ttcnth streets, nut with au accident which may terminate fatr.lly for him. lie wus woikiug on the third ator wall in the rear of the building, anil was standing on a scaffolding which was temporarily erected for the pur pose of building up the Mall. As Liv ingstone stood upon the scaffold a board under Ida feet turned and pre cipitated hi in to the ground, a diUuc; of at least thirty-five feet. The poor mau Ktruck on his right side and in tin full his rigkt thigh was badly f ma tured. In the descent Livingstone struck on a small area wall, which has been built and this concussion only ud ded to his injuries. lies ides Living Btoue, there were between eight or ten men working on the building, and when they saw their companion fall, immediately hastened to his assistance. He lay upon the eaith insensible, and the men picked him up and carried him to Dr. Merriain's on Fifteenth street. When he was carried up to the oflice, the doctor examined him aud found that his heart was beating but faintly and the man unconscious. Presently he recovered enough to speak and he faintly called for water. As soon as the doctor set ihe fiacture of I he limb, a conveyance was sent for and Living stone was taken home. Ir. Merriam, at this time is unable to sny whether the injuries will prove fatal or not, but lie is ccilain I hat the iuu:i will have u haid lime to survive. The above we clip from the Omaha Union. The Mr. Livingstone men tioned has many friends in this city, he being employed on the Sherwood buil ding here during its construction. Mrs. Livingston was here at the time of tuc accident, but was summoned to her husband's side by a telegram immedi ately thereafter; from parties convers ant with the nature of the injuries, we learn that but vague hopes are enter tained for his recovery. Track Topics. Yesterday there were 660 freight cars crossed on the Plattsmoutii bridge. Thos McCue, a freight brakenian, lias received his discharge fordruukeu ness and getting left from his train. Frank Watson has commenced work over at the Pncitic Junction fetation. Conductor Taylor, from the 1$. & M. main liue freight force, has resig.ied as the bulletins announce, to save a dis charge. Conductor Wampler, another main line freight man, has been discharged for numerous causes, all of which were enumerated on the bulletins. Conductors Blue aud Brown have been transferred from 'he bridge; divis ion to main line freight runs. Fred Eaton is new freight conductor on the bridge division, who, with Lewis, were promoted to train runs. Lately, the B. & M. people have had a large and increased amount of work in the freight transportation line and have had to work their train men long and extra hours. Sup't Thorn psou com plimeiits the train men on his division tor the cheerful and willing way in which they have handled the extra work for the company. Happy Cal Wagner in Omaha The performance given last evening at Boyd's opera house by Wagner's minstiels was attended by an immense audience, in which were seen the faces of our most prominent citizens and the atre goers. At 7:45 standing room on ly was announced, aud after the cur tain was rung up at eight o'clock ev ery ouu who cams had to be denied ad- mittauce, and lose one ot the pleasaut- est treats of the season. The crush on the sidewalk was simply marvellous ex cept to thosf who know what Happy Cal Wag.ier's minstrels can do in the way of drawing a crowd, and the police found it impossible to clear the walks. As to the programme, it may be said in brief that all the acts were new. The eutertainmeut, from first to last, was full of mirt h without any semblance of vulgarity. Our citizens appreciate real merit, genuine wit and minstrelsy in a - refined manner, aud Happy Cal Wagner must realize the fact, for surely an audience ot such mag nitude and respectability is rarely gathered together in our city. Omaha Bee. Official Returns Mayor Smith and councilmen Pat terson and Murphy are home from New York city, where they h:ive been on business of importance f ?r the city. The Herald in conversation with the mayor, learns they had a successful trip and that they will have a proposi tiun to submit to tho city council at their next meeting, which the Herald will then m :ke public. Grand Jury Discharged- The grand jury returned indictments agaiust Shay for enteriag Anderson's house and Sullivan for entering R. H. Druesdow's boarding hojje. Having n other business before them they were discharged by Judge Pound. District Attorney J. B. Strode, before the Jury was dismissed complimented them on the manner iu which they transacted their busiuess, and stated that Otoe county furnished less criminal busine than any county iu his district. One of the iuigesi attdieues that ev er assembled wimin the walls of the opera house was that whicn greeted the appearance of Cal Wagner's new minstrels Ust evening To say that it was au appreciative one would be putting it. loo mildly, for from the re of the curtain to ihegoiug dow n ol the same every song and every sally was gree ed wnii rounds of applause. Hap py Cal is iht same artist who has been df lighting audiences for so long a peri od that the memory ot man ruueth not to the coutrar", but unlike the gener ality of bis couireres iu the burnt cork line he has kept ahead ol the times, and as a sequence all hi jokes and all his acts are new. State Jour nal. The valuable driving team stolen from Mr, Ambrose Patterson a few weeks ago has never been heard of since they left t le county. A man claiming to be a collector for a sewiug machine comuany hired the team with the apparent intention of collecting money due his company in tue Soutnern part of the couuty. In this manner he got three or four days the stare of his pursuers which seems to be sufficient for his safety. The on ly point he can be traced to was the town of Weeping Water where he coel-. ly put up and fed the team on the first day. It seems a little etrauge that a man could get away with a stolen team, in broad day light from this part of the State. A Grand Time.
