THE IRON-CLAD OATII.
New York. August 17 One of the
most prominent of the striking tele
craphera said today that the strike was
Dractically at an end. He believed in
the brotherhood and stuck by it as
lonsr as he could, but they were beaten,
and might as well cive up first as last.
He had signed the iron-clad oath, and
would return to work tomorrow. He
knew of many other operators who
would endeavor to return at once.
The iron-clad oath refered to compels
a telegrapher to pledge himself to with
draw from the brotherhood and never
again to join a similar organization.
Press agent Somerville, of the West
ern Union, said no wires were tampered
with last night, and all circuits are
working nicely.

In addition to the seventeen tele
graphers who returned to work yester
day, ten more returned today, three of
whom were ladies.
THE SCRAMBLE FOR JOBS.
New York, August 17. A statement
is made ou the best authority that Mas
ter Workman Campbell, of the broth
erhood ot telegraphers, today informed
members of the organization to look
out for themselves and make as good
terms with the Western Union company
as they could secure. Each man looked
out for himself. The female operators
came iu a body, thirty in all. Seven
teen were accepted and the rest were
rejected, their positions haying been
filled. Forty-five male operators were
accepted out of sixty-two who applied
The order to assemblies in other cities
does not appear to have reached them
until this evening. It is learned from
Pittsburg, Boston and Chicago, that the
operators are coming back on the run
dissension.

were also manifestations ot disapprov
al of the management of the strike.

a preliminary of employment, signed a
paper agreeing to.

Scotts wood, Ala, Aug. 17. Taylor
Banks, colored, was banged today for
the murder of Turner Woods in Dec.
1881. Only twenty-five persons wit
nessed the execution, but fully 8,000
came to town. Banks confessed that be
murdered Woods at the solicitation of
the latter's wife. lie said he felt sure
of going to glory. Mrs Woods was sent
to the penitentiary for life. The victim
