Neither Side Concedes to the
Demands of the Uiher.
TKKATIMJ FOK A COMPROMISE.
New York, August 15. At noon to
day a committee of six striking opera
tors formerly employed by the Western
Union company, wailed on General
Erkcrt and asked for an interview,
wliieh was granted. Itis not known (
what proposition they have to advance.
The committee said they represented
tlie Moise operators and linemen iu the
t-in ploy of the Western Union, but that
their call was not to be considered as a
weakening on the part of the brother
hood. Their purpose was to inquire on
what terms the meu would be taken
back into service. CJeneral Eckert said
he would recommend that those now
out should apply to their respective
superintendents lor information as to
terms for resumption of work.
THE WEST EN UNION.
The executive committee of the Wes
tern Union met today. Among those
present were Jay (Jould, (Jeo. Gould,
Russell Sage, Cjrus Field, Harrison
Durkec .-ml General Eckert. No ref-t-iciu'c
to the strike. After the meet
ing an informal conference iu regard
to the application of the committee of
strikers, to Genersil Eckert was held,
av.d they heartily endorsed his action
in referring them to their superintend
ents for information as to terms upon
which they will be taken bark.

The executive board of the telegraph
ers brotherhood sent a communication
to Cel. era! Eckert stating that 'since
all our attempts to effect a reconcilia
tion hae proved futile, we now desire
to state that it is the intention of the
brotherhood to ignore your ultimatum,
and cany out light with renewed vigor
an 1 determinatii'ii by every legitimate
means in oir power."

Hobokeu, N J.. Aug. 15. Nineteen
wires of the New Jersey telephone
company were cut last night.

and September 19. A wigwam will be
erected by the hotel keepers for the
convention. Pierre Van Wyck's suc

meeting was entiiely harmonious.
The delegates to the State convention
will number 476.
YELLOW FEVER.
Quebec. August 15. The Norwegian
bark, Panama, for this port, is reported
to be coming up the river with yellow
fever on board, two deaths haviug al
ready occurred aud others of the crew
beiug down with the disease
MINE DISASTE1C.
London, August 15. Whiie thirteen
men were being hauled to the surface
at a mine near the town ot Redruth,
county Cornwall, today, the rope at
tached to the car broke, aud twelve of
the men w ere precipitated to the bot
tom of the shaft and instantly killed.
SIGNS OF EARTHQUAKE.
London, August 15, There are
alarming signs of earthquake in Serre,
on the island of Isch.a. Springs are
drying up, aud smoke is issuing from
fissures in the ground. The miuisterof
public works has issued an order for
the immediate erection of huts for the
accommodation of the people in case
they are compelled to vacate iheir
houses.

London, August 13. A party of de
positors . in a small "savings bank in
London, angry at tjieir inability draw

ITALIAN CLAIMS.
Gibraltar, August 15. The Italian
envoy at Aangier, Morocco, has lower
ed the flag iu the consulate and the in
habitants are in consequence in a state
of great panic. This hostile action on
the part of the enemy is on account of
the sultan of Morocco not yet haviDg
yielded to the, ultimatum of Italy, in
insisting upon full r payment of the
claims of Italian subjects. There is an
Italian squadron in the harbor in readi
ness to support the demand on the sul
tan. .

THE LAIOR QUESTION.
New York. August IS. Tho United
States senatorial committee on labor
aud education continued its inquiry to
day. John S. McClelland, a telegraph
operator, declared that threats were
beiug made by many railroad com
panies that they would discharge any
man found to be a member of the
brotherhood. Among others the Mich
igan Central and Pennsylvania If ailroad
companies employed this plan. Other
menus taken by capital to enslave
workingiaeu were cited by the witness.
The witness gave a number of statis
tics showing that strikes of working
men had very generally proven fail
ures. Philadelphia, August 15. On invi
tation of Senator Blair, chairman of
the senate sub committee, the Amalga
mated association of iron and steel
workers at its session today decided to
send John Jarrett. Win. Martin and
James Penny to testify before the com
mittee at Washington after the conven
tion adjourns.

TUK COOPERS.
Peoria, August 10. 1 lie coopers
convention which has been in feession
here a few days, adjourned today, hav
ing concluded its labors. It was called
for the the purpose ot reorganizing the
international union, an association
which Avas formed iu Chicago ten years
ago and was dissolved after a few years
The last convention was held in 1875.
Delegates were here here from all the
principal cities iu this couutry and
Canada. The proceeding were secret.
The reorganixation of an aid associa
tien or union was affected. It was also
decided to organize a in ulna! insurance
company, which will increase the
membership to at least 10,000. The
following officers w ere elected :
President and treasurer, Thomas
Hennepin, of Cleveland ; secretary, J.
B. Lewis, of Peoria; second vice presi
dent, P. Egan, of Toronto, Canada, :Jd
vice president, John J. Long, of Alton;
4th vice president. James Herdman, of
Peoria; Gftlt vice president, John Mc-
Grath, of Cleveland. The convention
then adiourneil subiect to the call of
executive commit toe. The name was
changed to the Cooper's Protective as
sociation of North America.
