Sherman will plea.se accept our thanks for the use of his press during the "fracture. The thermometer today has htcn try ing to climb over the top of its case, and the weather 13 anything to judge iy, it has almost succeeded. It is cer tainly the hottest day of the season. Bad blood exists between them, and the sporting fraternity anticipate a lively time. The people of Fairview are indignant iccause the county superintendent re fused to grant a certificate to a com petent lady teacher, who had success- ully taught nine months, out grants them to the males. They ought to lect a lady superintendent up there, then the thing might be reversed. We notice by the papers that Dr. Kehrsteiner, of Sutton, is abroad in the land working up a support for a demo cratic German paper. If the Dr. is as successful in his newspaper enterprise, as he has been in the practice of medi cine, nothing is to be feared from ils ullueuce. The Presbyterian social at the resi dence of F. E. The boat and hostess assisted by Prof, and Mrs. Drummond were untiring in their ef forts to entertain their guests, and their spacious and elegant home was the scene of pleasant social intercourse in terspersed with music aud refreshments which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The opposition says that no one need lose any sleep over the corn crop in Nebraska this year. We are just as certain to nave a good large crop of th'u "staple of the west" as we are cer tain that the sun will shine. Some pf our farmers were a little fearful just after the crop was planted, it being so wet, but they now se their fears were misplaced and premature. Iu spite of almost daily rains, the warm rays of old lunar, between showers, is making the corn spring forth with fearful strides. It aud the weeds seem to be on a strifit which can make the great est headway in twenty-four hours. One farmer told us for a fact that his corn grew three inches in twelye hours) and he said it was not much of a day for corn either. The Rock Rapids, Ia Review, con tains the following description ot a new style of building houses: "County Treasurer M. W. Dickinson is just com pleting one of the most singularly con structed dwellings in the west part of town that ever came under our obser vation. The structure is 16 by 23 on the ground, nnd two stories high, and the walls are built out of lath, there be ing two parallel rows of them a few in ches apart, which are formed by laying one lath on top of another with cross pieces a short distance apart. This keeps the lath separated outsideaud in. There are no upright timbers of auy kind in the wall; the balance of the building is constructed the same as or dinarily.
