ers in Nebraska have recently enclosed

tracts of public land, thereby cutting

interior department that measures are
about to be taken which will result in
breaking up thi unlawful practice of
fencing public lands, a practicj which
has lately grown to a serious volume.

STONEWALL JACKSON.
Piiclimond. May 10. The death of
Stonewall Jackson, twenty years ago,
was commemorated today. The light
infantry blaes marched to Capitol
square, and fired a salute in front of
Jackson's monument. Itey. II. Mel
ville Jackson delivered an oration to a
large concourse of people.
KAID ON GAMBLERS.
Nashville, Tennessee, May 10. Five
thousand dollars worth of gambling
apparatus was burned on the public
square this afternoon by order of the
criminal court. Five hundred gam
blers have left the citj on account of
the law making gambling a felony. A
large number have gone to Chicago.
A BANK BUKOLARIZED.
Detroit, May 10. The bank of Town
send North, at Yassar, was burglarized
last night, the safe blown open, and i
S4.C0O in specie taken. The thieves
wire frightened away before they
could open another drawer which con
tained 8,000. Frank L. Tames, who
rooms over the bank, was held under
revolvers while the robbery was per
petrated. NO INTELLIGENCE OF CKOOIC.

STANDARD OIL WOKKS A 11 LAZE,
Jersey City, May 10, 11 a. in. The
woiks of the Standard Oil company, at
Communipaw, the most extensive in
this country, are on lire, and about
half the property now destroyed. The
fire started during a severe storm this
morning. One of the large tanks near
the shore was struck aud exploded by
lightning. The burning oil poured
out like nn angry river, and flowed
down the avenue between enormous
tanks of oil toward the river. In a
short time the flames communicated
with three huge tanks, and they ex
ploded simultaneously, with terrific
force, fragments of iron were hurled a
distance of half a mile, and burning
oil was scattered in all directions. The
entire lire department was summoned,
but their services were almost useless.

MURDER AND SUICIDE.
Paris, May 10. A tragedy which
created a great sensation was enacted
this morning on liue Saint Deiiia. "While
a marriage party was proceeding along
that thoroughfare, on their way to tlr;
church, a rival of the bridegroom shot
and killed him. The assattsiu then poi
soned himself.

London. May 10. A meeting of in
fluential frhip owners to-day, including
the representatives of 3,000,000 Tons of
Suez car.al traffic, adopted a resolution
favoring the con.tiuction of another
canal across the- Isthmus, and appointed
an executive committee to carry out the
plans of the meeting.
WHITEHEAD'S EXAMINATION.
London, lay .10. Magendi. public
analysist at Kurminghaui, and chief in
spector of explosives, gave testimony
concerning the nitro glycerine found in
Whitehead's factory. Whitehead cross
examined him. and displayed much in
telligence in question. The witness
declined to state that he understood the
manufacture of all ciploiivoa. The
