At twelve o'clock midnight, a huge
lire broke out in the Lyon meat murket,

tiled on the south side of the block, with
wind blowing- northward, which will
carry the lire clear across. There is no

building' are in ilaines. All the citi
zens are on hand trying to arrest the
progress of the fire.

Great Northern, are now lodged in jail
at Longview for an alleged series of
systematic robberies of baggage for
the past year-or two. The Missouri
Pacific lias paid between S-t.000 and
5,000 to paa-sengers as indemnity fcr
losses sustained by pilfering from
trunks, but the secret Dolice have been
unable to ferret out the perpetrators,
until breaking into the suspected men's
room at Longview two enormous
trunks were discovered which, when
opened, were found to disclose the
most valuable of the missing articles.
The men heretofore have been highly
trusted.

son, the. paymaster alleged to have

action was a fraud to cover his short
account with the government. An ex
amination by Col. Tirrell exhibited
shortages of about $." ,000. Wasson
confessed to this deficit, but claimed to
have made up tho amount, and had

vice rules were approved tliis morning
by the President, substantially as print
ed last Friday.
PAUPEll IMMIGRATION.
Inquiry regarding Governor IJutler's
letter to Folger shows that pauper im
migration from Ireland has for some
months been under the consideration
of the department. Reports by United
States consuls in Ireland generally
agree that the present distress is not
exceptional, and published accounts to
the contrary are exaggerated. Thfi
situation of the peasantry is miserable,
but it lias been so for yen is. Local
authorities have abundant means to
relieve actual necessity. The outlook
at home i3 very discouraging, and con
suls agree that the means to be found
is chiefly in emigration. Opinions dif
fer as to the question whether the gov
ernment, as the guardians of the poor,
or associations are engaged in sending
pa-upers to this country. The consul
at Dublin says it not done in his dis
trict. Some of tho other consuls be
lieve the authorities endeavor to in
duce the poor and lazy to emigrate.
Londonderry suggests that contribu
tors In America be more careful, as
charges are frequently made that such
funds are not always applied to the re
lief of the destitute.
CIVIL SERVICE MATTERS.
A report i3 current tonight that the
nomination of Keim, as chief examin
er of the civil service commission, is
to be withdrawn, and the name of
Charles Lyman, chief clerk of the
treasury, has been agreed upon, and
will be sent to the President with rec
ommendation for chief examiner in
stead of Keim. Messrs. Eaton and
Thomas decline to say anything on the
subject. The new civil service iu!es
having been approved, the coin mission
ers will leave Washington in a few
daj 3 for the purpose of putting exam
ining boards in operation in the large
cities. The commission propose to
have examining boards in cities fully
established in time to secure the ex
amination of applicants for positions
in the service sometime before July
16. Th ; work has been divided so
that each commissioner is assigned to
a district.

" The government has closed its open
ing." Wilson immediately inquired of the
court whether the gove; nment would
claim two arguments in closing.
Merrick replied in the affirmative,
and as showing the sentiment of the
attorney general Merrick read a leteer
from Brewster, wherein he (Merrick)
was directed to ask the court to allow
the government two closing argu
ments, for it is his conviction that
they ate entitled to it in this of all
other cases. If the court declines to
allow it then he (the attorney general;
is necessarily excluded.

ment by parliament of a measure pro

promised, however, that the present
power ol the government to prohibit
the entrance of infected animals would
be strongly exercised. One of the ob
jects of the deputation was to obtain
fresh restrictions on the American cat
tie trade.
