Helena, Ark., April 12. The wa
ter is rudnnjj through the Oldtown
break iu the levee. Many plantations
will be again overflowed. The water
is now in sight, bringing the river
within two feet of the late rise.

John Morrison, carriage maker, con
fessed judgment for $2,500 in luvor o1

ported to the police that his safe had
been robbed during the night, of
over $7,000 cash. II is story is to the

in his own safe. Morrison, being in
terviewed, admits that he had a num
ber ot notes falling due in a short
time but denies that he robbed him
elf. STEAMER SUNK.
Columbus, Ga., April 12. The
steamer Willie, of the Central line of
steamers, lust night struck a bridge
at Fort Gaines, carrying away
her cabin, and striking a pier, she sunk
immediately. The tirst and second
clerks, a negro child and three deck
hands are missing. She had a mis
cellaneous cargo. The boat and cat 'go
are a total loss.

mored trouble with the employes of
Faige, Sexsmith & Co., and the alleged
call on Governor Husk for troops is
untrue. All is quiet, and the assign
ment has been made t Governor Kim
ball, of Superior, and a party at Osh

Lynchburg, Vit., April 12. Estrlj
this morning about one hundred dis
guised persons attacked the jail at
Wytheville, forced the sheriff to sur
render the keys, took William Crockett
from jail and hung him from a beam
in a mill iu the outskirts of town.
Crockett was waiting trial for the
murder of James F. Hurst, in Wythe
ville. The murder was in cold blood,
and Crockett would have been lynched
at the lime had he not escaped, and
was secured two months ago and
brought back for trial. After banging
him the mob riddled his body with
bullets to insure death. Xone of the
lynchers were recognized. Excitement
prevails in Wytheville.
BOILER EXPLOSION.
Ashtabula, Ohio, April 12. Two
boilers in Hitchcock & Bradley's shaft
and pole works, exploded early this
morning, demolishing a three-storj
brick building, and killing night
watchman Charles Graham.

Sherman, in conversation this morning
concerning the coming gubernatorial
contest in Ohio, said, " Judge Lawrence
would be an excellent candidate. He
is a man of great executive ability, and
would make an admirable governor.
He considered his chances for the
nomination very good. Major Butter
worth is also prominently mentioned
in this connection. lie is very popu
lar and would be a 6trong candidate,
and a superior executive officer. It
seems to me that either Lawrence or
Butterworth will be the standard-bearer
of ths republican party in the ap
proaching canvass."
GEORGIA DEMOCBATS.
Atalanta. Ga., April 12. After a
lengthy discussion the democratic con
vention appointed a special committee
of eighteen to endeavor to effect a
compromise. The committee went out
immediately, and when their report
was made, recommending the nomina
tion of Henry D. 11c Daniel, of Walton
county. McDaniel was nominated by
acclamation amid wild enthusiasm.
CONNECTICUT LEGISLAVRH.
Hartford, April 12. The prohibi
tory amendment to the constitution
was rejected by the house, not having
the necessary two thirds vote. The
senate relected the bill requiring rail
roads to provide free passes to the leg
islature. Washington. April 12. Secretary
Lincoln left the city this afternoon
upon the United States steamer Des
patch a3 the guest of Commander
Green, upon a trip to Norfolk. The
Secretory will return Tuesday.
Atlanta, April 12. The republi
can committee has decided not to put
up a candidate.
