The art loan, conducted under the auspices of the good ladies of the M. E. Church of this city, has opened up auspiciously. The display is wonder ful and the arrangement of wans, in the Hock wood hall, is perfect, we pre dict a successful. fair for these ladies. Judge Folcjkk ha no far recovered blbcallh, t.s to be able to resume the discharge of his duties as head ot lite treasury department. Of this fact, the couutry has ample giouad for self congratulation. Judge Folger is a mau of unquestioned patriotism ami ability, aud so long as lie remains in charge of the treasury portfolio, the country can breathe easy. Tiik story going the rounds that Germany, Austria and Itusbia had or have formed an alliance again.it France i attracting considerable attention. Tut: IIekai-d believes that Fruuce ia to day the best governed nation unions those named, and the moat pronperous und peaceable. Perhaps it it is her prosperity and the capabilities She had developed for a republican form of gov ernment that is making these de-Mtisuis tremble. Apparently a small thing dis turbs the equilibrium of Kurop?. The Chicago Herald's special says the week jusi closed puts a much more favorable aspect 0.1 the condition of the winter wheat crop. It is now conceded that the yield will be much belter than that iigureu upon during the pat ten days or more. In the south the ahortage crop will not exceed fifteen or twenty per cent. and perhaps not so much as that. In California anil the I'ticitic Ioj.e a yield of eighty per cent, is estimated by close observers. Throughout the north ern wheat belt the crop will be fair. This is encouraging, to say the least of it. The dynamite and gunpowder fel lows are in bad luck. The London police Saturday arrested :t man named Kirton for complicity iu the nitro-gly-cerine plot. He claims to have but recently com? from the United Mates. Uernard (al!agher, a brother of an other prisoner, was arrested in Glas gow on suspicion, and he also claims to be a recent arrival from America. Experiments with the materials seized demonstrated their explosivene33, and in the lodgings of one of the prisoners a contrivance for filtering sulphuric .acid into chloride of potash was seized Inter Ocean. Wk notice the Omaha and Lincoln people are beginning to speak of other projected roads, which are needed b-3' those cities; and we hope P'altsmouth will not become apathetic upon this question, as her rpring trad? opens up and her merchant and speculator be come immersed in trade. It would make Plattsmouih one of the first cities of Nebraska if she could secure the crossii g of an independent line of road traversing diagonally northern Iowa aud southern Nebraska, to the lakes. This line of road will be built and the absolute necessity of this flour ishing point securing it ought to be apparent to any and everybody. .Tl'DOe GEttsrtAM, of Indiana,, us sumcs the post office portfolio at once; and is said to he a man of strong common sense, .and practice' idea It in said that upon one occasion, the great anil ex erriitigly ronscleiitious Hayes, when president, eut Jude Gersham wortl io liposo of some criminal without letting the matter eome to trial, as he, (the president) was interested iu the man some nay; aud that;Judge Gersham replied, he was the jnde ot; that court, and 6o lony as he presided there, business would-be conducted fctrictlv under the fojrus and customs prescribed in that court, without partiality to any one. We gucus he will ruu the P. O. ' department.' Mk. Jay Gould and hi well heeled associates, apprize the couutry through Mr. Gould's great telegraph Hue, that Mr. Gould, has launched his new yacht with eclat; that btic slid into the water handsomely , and that Mr. Gould's daughter, .Nellie, broke the customary bottle of "Mums Extra Dry" and cbriateued the yacht "Atlauta;" that several wealthy na bob were present, aud aererai more were unavoidably detained by one of Mr. Gould railroad traius bcieg be hind time; aud that the said yacht was lurnished aud finished in a man lier a rich and costly at Mr. Gould'a gold cau accomplish. All that such notices accomplish n to advertise American fluukyistn.. Some of these day Mr. Vanderbilt will buy h new neck tie, or perhaps a night shirt that will out suell and out frill the kiug Jy Tabor of Colorado, and then the wheY-ry will bo treated to another -wrciiort of ttrch xrevrsiT) Tu irenmoe , An alarming condition of affairs exists today In Europe; and fully as remarkable as alarming. There seems to be a well organized, system atic plan farmed by the reTolu tionists of all despotic forms of gov eminent in the did world, to bring about a revolution In governmental affairs by means of the knife and mine. To the philosophic mind, this is the remarkable feature of the re volt against those governments. It is hard to imagine what arguments are used to induce men possessing intelli gence und manhood to engage iu the mad work of the assassin. One can imagine a state of affairs so bod, as to drive brave, desperate men, to waylay and assassinate a tyrant wnose only motive in ruling, is to oppress and de stroy; but it requires a different stretch of imagination to understand any state of affairs, so bad, as to bind together any considerable number of brave men iu a compact ao horrible especially in this day and age as to warrant them in engaging in assassin ations of the innocent and helpless, in order to intimidate and coerce their rulers! aud this seems to be the size and proportions of the conspiracies now being laid bare in England, Prance, the German States aud Rus sia. The world in all ages has inur ed the patriot, who dared to lead in revolution, for. the overthrow of the tyrant, and the duemhrallnient of op pressed humanity; ou the contrary, it has only condemnation 10 the con spirator whose acts are known only to the midnight plotter, aud whose argu ment appeals to the knife and drug, instead of the enlightened judgment aud noble impulses of mankind. The worst feature of this nihilistic organization, is, it seems to have a headquarters in free America, and just, complaints may goon be made that this country by furnishing an as sylum ha become the harborer and eucourager of these (lends. Jf the- con spiracy is as widespread as the author ities of England seem to have proof of, and with its headquarters established in this country, one can very easily understand how a state of affairs way arise at any morr;rnt which might compromise the good faith of our country, with the very strongest pow ers of Europe. When mines are being exploded in the capitals of England, France and Germany, by individuals claiming the protection of the Ameri can flag, it is getting to say the least of it to be a serious matter. When Ilerr Most, a refugee from the old world, is permitted to stand up in our public places aud congratu late his fellow conspirators that the work of assassination has "fairly com menced in Europe, and that it is des tined yet to spread oyer the United States!" it is about time this couutry which professes to spell its came with a large "N" would take steps to take care of such daogerous characters. That free America "sympathizes with Ireland, is an undisguised fact, and it is right that our sympathies should go out to every misgoverned people that we cannot have any sympathy for the conspiracy which is attempting to right wrongs by the commission of crimes, the enormity of which, mak.. the wrong sought to be righted re spectable; is also a fact. It is a serious state of affairs, and if the half be tiue, that is now claimed, the peace of Europe is certainly jeop ardized. Gov. Dawes calis atteutiou to the lib eral premiums offered by our state board ot agriculture for the greatest number of trees planted during the month of April, 1883. by any one person, and also for the greatest u umber of trees planted during the entire year 1S83; also he calls attention to the specisl "arbor day" ' premium, i. o. for the greatest number of trees planted upon arbor day by any one person. Arbor day, as our readers will notice by the governor's proclamation, is fixed for April ISth, and TheJIehaijj thinks our people could no. do better rhau to devote this day to t:ie careful planting of choice trees. Jc braskiisno longer the "treeless state," but all over her beautiful landscape the eye i9 rejoiced with beautiful groves of timber. The offering of these premiums by our sta e lxiard is a sensible and j practical feature of the sensible and j practical manner hi which tho eiiMb!e and practical gentlemen who tmpose j that board do businesi. Tun citizens of I'Jattsiiiouth should all see to it that our present city gov- ernmeut is encouraged, in taking per- taanent steps to viden the sidewalks on Main street, and all business streets, and establish -he limit for tho pave ment of these streets. It has been as certained in all our western cities where pavemeuts have been put down that these very wide streets are all mistake; it costs the citizen and prop erty owners just so tnnch more to keep them in repair and in good order. A narrow street is just as convenient for business. (live the extra portion of the street to the business men and citizens fur sidewalks, and keep the balance io good repair; especially, let the gutters be of n ufficient capacity t carry off All surface water and thus protect the cellars and foundations of business houses. TyroGiiArniCAL errors upon our editorial page yesterday makes us say, in speaking of the old democratic par ty for which we feel much sympathy solicitude, "a h angry robber" where it should read "rabble"; a!so where we peak of the party containing too many "impracticables" we are made to use the word "Impracticabilities." The saloon keepers of Lincoln are "kicking over the ordinance which com- pels them to close their talcons at ten o'clock and thirty minutes every night. They claim, it seems, that the hefty im bibing is done in that flourishing city af ter their hour of closing, and that the Other saloons the drug stores are catching all that custom, which rightfully belongs to the mcnwho pay the thous and dollar license. In consequence of this police regulation these saloons threaten to not take out any license this year. Any ordinary fellow ought to be able to get his '-night cap" fcquarely aboard before half past ten o'clock, and instead of giving these gentlemen an op portunity to run all night. The 1If.ii.vlo would suggest to the authorities of Lin -coin that the city government proceed to regulate the drug stores as a remedy instead of removing the healthy restric tions of the haif past ten ordinance. Ol'K readers will notice by the fol lowing from the btate Journal that the old reliable C. Ii. Jk Q., have at last effected arrangements so that freights can be taken w ithout change through to aud.t'roin Sail Lake, Utah; this is simply the precursor of better days to southern Nebraska. It means that this couutry is now practically open to the soul, the mineral', the products of the mountains aud v alleys of that rich country upon the Pacific fclope, which hitherto, came to us through the good grace and loud du ties of a Union Pacilic monopoly: The Chicago, l.urliugtou & Quiucy railroad will now, and heuccfurlh, take freights through to Salt Lake without change. It is evident that the combination between this line aud the Denver & liio Grande is a fixed fact, and that competition for Utah business will be brisk. The prt'seiit tiuaucial condition of the government of the dominion of Canada seem a to indicate a degree of prosperity which is hi'hlv llattcrincr to the nresent management. "The elates for the Ms- cal year are more satisfactory than any that have ever before been presented. The taxation lias been reduced a million and a half dollars, while the indebted ness of the dominion government has been promptly paid without resorting to a loan. There is a surplus of ten mil lions in the treasury. And the fact that the deposits in the saving banks of the. country have been largely increased dur ing the vear must be taken as another evidence of the genera! prosperity of the Canadian people. 0. li.
