Senator Van Wyck has beeu urging the
interior department to order immediate
sale of the Otoe Iudiati lauds in Kansas
aud Nebraska, notwithstanding the
house of representatives neglected the
nenator's bill, which was deemed neces
sary fur u complete sale. The apprais
ers have finished their task, and they
value the lands at from $4 to $10 per
acre. .Secretary Teller will protect all
the iuterestH, aud the sale will be made
about May 1st.
THE EXI'OKT DRAWBACK.
The commissioner of internal reve
nue says the allowance of the export
drawback, tinder the provisions of sec
tion 33tfG, Revised Statutes, on all snuff,
tobacco, cigars and cigarettes entered
for export ou aud after May 1st, 183,
will be limited to the tax ou articles of
this class in force on that day, as fol
lows: On manufactured tobacco, in
cluding unull", eight cents per pound.
On cigars and cigarettes weighing over
three pounds per thousand, three dollars
per thousand. Ou cigarettes weighing
not over three pounds per thousand, fifty
cents per thousand.

The following general ordtr was issued
to-day by the post office department:
General Order No. 4C7. That order
No. 4C3, of January 12, 1883, is hereby
revoked. Section 37 of the postal laws
and regulations of lUl'J is amended so
as to read : "Postal cards and prepaid
letters are to be forwai ded if requested.
Prepaid letters are to be forwarded from
one post office to another at the re-iest
of the party addressed, without addi
tional charges for postage. All letters
upon which one full rate of postage has
beeu pniJ, and all postal cards shall be
forwarded from the office to which they
are addressed to another office at the re
quest of the person addressed or of the
party whose card may be upsn the en
velope, or whose name may be signed to
the postul card, without additional
charge. Such forwarding must continue
until the party addressed is reached."

MURDERED FOR MONEY.
St. Locis, Apri, 9. An old Indian
woman, over eighty years old, known
as "Wiaow jane," living a lonely life
near Osage, Kansas, was murdered
two or three days ago, and, her cabin
set fire to conceal the crime. Money
was the object ot the murder. The
old woman had been known to have
several hundred dollars.
A WAR AVERTED.
Chicago, April 9. It is understood
that the passenger rate war between
the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
and tho Chicago, Rock Island & Pa
cific roads, on the traffic between
Kansas City and St. Paul, has been
settled by agreement to maintain
rates, the fare by both routes to be
the ram. '

VaU-auaimo, Neil, April 10. Mrs.
Dayton, wife of a farmer living about
five miles east of Valparaiso, Saunder-t
County, was fatally burned iu a prairie
fire Saturday. She ras aid.ng her
husband in endeavoring to keep the
lire off their premises, and went to tin
house to get him a pail of water,
where she got auflieated with the
tlamtand smoke, and was dead be
fore assistance arrived. No l ul l her
particulars at present.
TOO -MUCH WATER.
ST. Louis. April y. A private dis
patch from New Orleans saja the city
is liable to be inundated if any of the
front of the levee gives way. The
river is now on a level with the crown
of the levee along the front part of
the city. The crevasse at Oouldsboro,
ou the right bank of thu liver directly
opposite New Orleans, will be clossd
this evening.
MOKE WATER.
New Orleans, April 9. The rear
portion of the third district is still
overflowed from the rain and high
tide. The Ujw of water through the
CJouldsboro crevasse is reduced. It
will be entirely checked soon. The
river today reached the Hood height of
1874. The water ran oyer the levees
at several poiuts.

which he further expressed his oppo
sition to the dynamite policy on the
part of Irishmen. He declares that

ing watch over a number of Russian
refugees here, who they suspect are
connected with the alleged plot to take
the life of the Czar at tho time of his
coronation. It is reported that some
French detectives will proceed to Mos-

Dublin says Joe Brady, Tim jthy Kel-
ley, Pat Delaney, Thomas Caffrey,

London. April 9. The Mark L ine
Express, iu its review of the British
grain trade for the past week, says:
The supply was restricted, although it
exceeded the demand. Price3 are fall
ing. Foreign wheat is stagnant. Car
goes in large supply. Twenty eight
arrivals, and two sale3. Forward trade
neglected. Flour declined Is. For
eign flour is depressed and Gdls low
er. Maize cheaper. Mixed American,
9d lower. Burlej , good demand Prices
nominally unchanged. Foreign barl-y
slow sale and steady. Oats generally
unaltered, foreign outs, dull through
out. Sales of Enzlish wh.Mt during
the past week, 57,733 quarters, at 42s,

where the trial of the Phoenix Park
assassins is to take place was besieged
this morning by crow Js eager to gain
admission. The authorities, however,
enly admitted the jurori called in the
case and fifty reporter :, and they were
let into the building at an early hour.
Judge O'Brien, who is to hear the ca3e,
took bis seat on the bench at 11:15
o'clock, when the work of swearing
in the grand jury was proceeded
with. The prisoners, Brady, Kelley,
Delaney, Gaff rey, Curley and Fitzliar
ris, were brought to the court house at
