HOWE'S yUNEKAL.
Milwaukee. March 28. -The funer
al of Postmaster General Howe will
occur at 3 o'clock Wednesdry after
noon, the services being held at the
house of his nephew, Col. James B.
Ilewe. of Kenosha, after which th
body will be taken in a special car to
Green Bay. Telegrams have been re
ceived by Col. Howe announcing that
several members of the cabinent and
a numl.er of congressman will b in
attendance. There is a strong proba
bility that General Grant will be pres
ent. Secretary Lincoln, it is said, is
already on his way. Kenosha is in
mourning, the postofllce being heavily
draped.

afternoon. By reason of this affecting
event, the president directs that the de-

this department of thu death of liou.
Timothy O. Howe, which occurred at
Keuosha, Wisconsin, on the 23th iust. at
2 p. m. By his death the department
loses a chief of eminent ability, whose
superior ability for the important posi
tion was recognized by every subordinate
with whom he came in contact. Timothy
O. Howe was a man with whom and un
der whom it was a pleasure as well as an
honor to serve. Bv his death the coun
try loses an able.honest statesman, whose
public career was marked by clear judg
ment, failhful service, justice to all. The
loss of such a man is a country's loss. In
obediedce to the executive order flags of
this department shall be displayed at
half mast for thirty days and the de
partment be closed on the 38th inst. the
day appointed for the funeral. As a fur
ther mark of respect it is hereby order
ed that the department bs drajted for
thirty days. It is further ordered that
on ihe 83th inst. the postoffices through
out the country be closed between the
hours of 2 and 5 p. m.

Cincinnati. March 26. The stock
holders of the Cincinnati & Baltimore
railway today voted to ratify the con
tract sale of their road to the Cincin
nati. Washington & Baltimore railroad
company. 23,750 shares of stock voted
in fayor of the sale and none against
it. 1,200 shares did not vote.

Detroit, March 26. An important
libel suit was begun here today iu the
superior court. Prof. Donald McLeon,
of the medical department of the state
university, sues John C. Scripps, editor
of the Evening News, of this city, for
$50,000 damages for publishing from a
Canadian paper an article averting that
the professor committed adultry with a
female patient from Ti sou burg, Ontario,
ho went to Ana Arbor, f.r treatment,
and was placed in his care. The de
fense plead justification and propose to

THE SCENE OF DISASTER.
Buaidwood, March 26. Great
crowds of miners, women and children
remained throughout the night and
the greater portion of the day, to wit
ness the removal of the bodies of the
drowned mintrs from the fatal Dia
mond mine.and some of the scenes were
very distressing. Froui twelve mid
night up to noon twenty-six bodies
were taken from the shaft, and of
these the following rould be recog
nized: Patrick Wall, Jos. Smith, Jos
Carroll, Frank Kloss, John Johnson,
Michael Bannon, Matthew Redmond,
John Cullough, Anson DrenbroJhy,
August Pallnais, Frank Merry, Daniel
Mc Bride, John Brakanai:, Herman
Urber. John Boyd. John Aikens
Seven remained unidentified. The
bodies generally arc in a very advanced
state'of decomposition. At 1 o'clock
this morning the funeral train left the
city for the Diamond mine to remove
the bodies to the cemetery. By iTine
o'clock eighteen bodies were in coffins
and transferred to two flat cars, and
the train moved out. Aa it was pass
ing the edge of the village of Diamond
Mrs Redmond signalled the train and
was allowed to take the coffin in which
her boy was placed, she declaring that
she would give him a proper burial.
At Braid wood many sad scenes oc
curred, women and children crying
bout the train and demanding that
the coffins be taken from the ears and
the lids removed, which in many cases
was done. The remains were then
plaeed tn hearses and afterwards given I
