immense majority. It now seems
probable that it will not be gained in
any other state during the pending
sessions of the legislatures, hould

fairly opened, the battle is extending
along the whole line. Each year de

as the days of the Apostles, difference

Prohibition was not advocated, but as
the party had undertaken to regulate
the traflic, it was declared to be cow
ardice to stop until this had been ac

to be unanimously m favor of submit
ting an amendment to the people plac
ing the whole subject in the hands of
the legislature. It was plainly inti
mated also that one cause of republi
can defeat last fail was the failure of
celebratiou of this day: at the Council the party to deal honestly with the

tion seems to have been settled in fa
vor of the western christians, and it
was decided that Easter should be
deemed a movable feast, and that the
full moon, next to the Vernal Equi
nox, should be taken for the full moon
in the month of Nisan and the 21st of

nox. Easter Sunday is therefore al
ways the Sunday following the full
moon, which falls on or next after the
21st of March. The earliest possible
day whereon Easter can happen in
any year, is the 33d of March, and the
latest the 25th of April. Friday, our
God Friday, preceding easter, is ob
served as a special fast in commemora
tion of the crucifixion, and Easter Sun
day as a special feast in honor of the
resurrection of our Lord. One wiiter,
in speaking of the curious customs
which used to attach to this day in
different parts of the world, says: "In
Ireland formerly people arose at 4 a.

ignorant but the wealthy and well in
formed, scrupulously observed this
custom. In England they were wont
to call the reflection of the sun in run
ning water 'lamb playing'. An old
ballad says :

and it was recommended that what
ever stand the party took in the future

Nevertheless, the lowers of temper
ance aad righteousness must not de
pend upon "party policy" for perma
nent reform. It will be a helpful ally,
under certain circumstances. But the
power which brings real reform comes
from God and his truth, working
through his people. Temperance re
form lies on a far higher plane than
ordinary political questions. The
primary, the continual, and the ulti
mate hope'of all good work, centers in
the church and in its influence on so
ciety. The pulpit must lead in maim
facturinga proper, "public sentiment,'
and the moral stamina requisite to
push forward and sustain the reform
The young men who enter the ranks
today will grow gray before the battle
is over. What sudden revolution God
maj have in store for the cause of
temptrance, we know not. We remem
ber when men who are now living sand
of slavery, "It will not be abolished in
our day, if ever." These same men
yet live to see it a thing of the past,
and the flowers of peace and good will
overgrowing the "bloody chasm." We
