act, known as the Snimlding bill, passed
ut the last bessiou of congress. An at
torney, representing a number of these
postmasters, ia now in Washington and
has made an informal argument on their
behalf at the postoffice department, main
taining that the increase of fcalariea pro-

paid out of the regular appropriation lor
salaries for the current fiscal year. The
officers of the department, however, as
sert that the law providing for the read
justment of postmasters' salaries cannot
be carried into effect without a specific
appropriation; that to pay the increase
of salaries out of the regular appropria
tion would create a deficiency. It is the
intention of the department to begiu the
work of readjusting salaries under the
two per cent postage law as provided for
in the Bingham bill, as soon a possible.
CHICAGO CERTIFICATES.
The acting secretary of th'i treasury
has received a comniunicatio.i from the
officers of Ht-veral banks in Chicago, ask
ing that the silver curtificatos issued by
the assistant United States treasurer at
at that city be nmdy to bear some maik
of identification, and that the gold re
ceived there be held to redeem such cer
tificates and no others, that the assistant
treasurer in Chicago ho eusplied with a
reasonable amount of both large and
small certificates, and that different de-
nominations be ifaUo lutercnaugaoie.
The acting secretary replied that it is not
deemed expedient to put distinctive
marks on the current series of gold cer
tificates for the purpose of identification
as an issue ot the Chicago office.aud that
such mark, would, in his opiuion.lead to
complications and tend to discredit these
certificates in other cities where in the
ordinary course of circulation they might
go. The department, he says, is not at
present prepared to authorize th issue
of a distinctive series tor Chicago alone,
since that involves the question of a sep-
erate and distinct series for each sub
treasury. If, however, the bankers of
Chicago wish to exchange one denomin
ation of certificates for another, and will
so inform him, the department in view of
the existing circumstances.will cause the
Chicago office to be supplied with gold
certificates of smaller deuomiuations.and
authorize the desired exchange.

bloody affair occurred on the border of
the Semluole nation. Brady, Bretny,
Hi Ptrryman, Billy Grimmitt and an
Indian were engaged iu a game of
cardii, which finally ended in a free
fight. Iu which the Indian killed Bret
uy and Perryman. Grimmitt, who
took no active part in the light, waa
accidentally shot by one of the three
during tho shooting. The next morn
ing two brothers named Mose and
Gabriel Marshall, friends of the dead
men, followed tho Indian, who had
fled, and coming up with him, riddled
his body full of bullets.
