Candidates for post offices will govern theraselres accordingly. Ik the star route case" hold on through the heated term, we would like to know when those fellows under indictment do An in South Carolina for ballot-box stuffing are going to jret their trial. Mi:. Tarnelu in a late interview, denounces the attempt of the London press to lay the last Thursday night's xplosion in London at the door of the land league, and declares the-e ex plosions to have been caused by gas. Ladt Flokknce Dixie, who was attacked by disguised ruffians at Wind sor on the 17th. laughs at the rumor that her assailants were Irish assas sins. She said: -The whole affair is most mvsterious. I can ascrib the motive to no one, as my sympathies for the Irish people have Ix-eii openly avowed and are well known." It was assumed that the attack would be laid at the door of the Irish, an assump tion which she warmly repudiated. adding: -In these days every crime must be of Irish origin. The claim of Mr. Manning, of the '-shoe string" district, in Mississippi, is oue of those cheering exhibitions of cheek, which, peculiarly, is the proper ty of the southern democrat of aris tocratic tendencies. It appears that Gen. Chalmers b;i3 been elected to congress in this fa mous distiict. that Gen. Manning wa his opponent, and was counted in un der the rules and regulations govern ing well regulated democratic com mittees iu the south. Consequently, a contest has arisen between these gen erals of doubtful means and methods in politics, us to which one ought to be entitled to his seat. Gen. Manning claims that Gen. Chalmers received the favoring smile of a republican ad ministration, aud tht substantial aid of the national committee in the shape of a few hnndred dollars, to assist him in running his campaign down in the ''shoe string" district, aud that this is eno-j'a to unseat any man of political beliefs iu opposition to the organized bourlon of Mississippi. In 1583, Gen. Cuaimers was tliei demo cratic candidate in that uistric:, and was counted in. and seat down to Washington to represent the people, by exactly the same men, who' now count him out and count in his rival, Geo. Manning. Ballot boxes in this Mi.ssiss:ppi dis trict have been blown up, burned up and ravished, in every conceivable way, ti enthrone dam cr.i.j iu pj-ver; but let it be shown that the republic-til national committee have ineste.l a little wealth down thrre to ena(.r a mm of uerv, like (im. Mrs. Frank Leslie, Publisher, 53. 5 anl 57 I'nrk Place, New York. The star route trials, now iu pro gress iu the District of Columbia, are a reproach and a displace to American jui ispi ude..ce. Our courts of justice. is a rule, aud those especially under fedcial control aud influences have heretofore stood high in the estimation of the enlightened portions of tho world where constitutional libeitj is prized, and where constitutional safe guards for the protection of the citi zen in his person and property are ob served and appreciated. It has been one of the boasts of American institutions, that our courts of justice throw th'.e safeguards about the person of the citizen, that render hi in absolutely safe from danger by persecution. We have been taught that those sacred guarantee--, always extend to, ami protect the citizen in person and in property, and that neither the one nor the other shall be denied him until upon due trial it has been shown that he has by violation of law, forfeited that right to their protection which is otherwise guaran teed, and that tho presumption cf in nocence is always accorded him until the contrary appears by competent testimony. iiut the whole course of these trials in Judge Wy lie's court seems to be conducted upon an entire ly different theory. The department of justice, from tiie attorney general down to the lowest detective iu its employ, seem to be or- ganized in a boastful crusade to secure j chew tobacco; such onts miyht have a the conviction of the accused which j slight chance; old bachelors bad bet has assumed the shape of persecution ; ter keep at a safe distance if they outside counsel have been employed at fabulous piiees. and the dramatic scenes of an Diigliah court of I he six teenth century are revived and re enacted. The character of the prosecution of the juryman, Dickeuou, right iu the presence of the ie-trial of this cause, where the present juiy is brought un der its immediate influence, and under the threatening vengeance of an angry government, is calculated, and doubt less intended, as an agency and means to assist in securing conviction, aud iu the presence of which no accused can he yuarantetd a fair and impartial trial. The action of the presiding judge, his conduct towards the prisoners dur ing the progress of the trial, his opin ions of their guilt, always improperly, and sometimes violently expressed, in the presence of the jury his ruling, for instance, upon the right of the de fense to impeach the evidence of in former Herdell his permission to the government counsel upon argument, as to the relevancy of testimony, to bitterly and vindictively abuse and traduce the prisoners at the bar, aud all this in lh presence of the jury which has to pass upon their guilt or innocence, is an outrage in an Ameri can court of justice, and is subversive of those constitutional safeguards which are intended to guarantee to every man a fair and impartial trial. If our readers will take the tiouble to examine the famous trials reported during the early part of the sixteenth century, they can there see and under stand the theory of our constitution and laws in guaranteeing to the citi zen a full, free and impartial hearing; they will there understand the reason a citizen of this government cannot be put upon his trial for constructive treason; they can there learn how citi zens of Great Britain were tried, con victed and murdered without a parti cle of legal evidence being adduced against them. The trial aud conviction of Sir Wal ter Raleigh 1603 is notably a case in point where the vituperative elo quence, the rancorous abu.e," of at. torney general C :ke. destroyed that good and useful man. The guilt or innocence of these men on trial can have nothing to do with this branch of the case; they should be fail ly tried and the grpater the offense, or the moie distinguished the individual is. the more careful the i government ami her tribunals cf us- j tice should hf. to see tii jt ibe coitstitu j Monal libertirs T M.- eit:z -u e.ie j li-'Pher T.-e.ikeiiel n r iit:jt:'i'ih'd. ) 5 hive ('mrr New.
