President Hayes called the canal i continuation of our coast line." It is more than that; it is a domi nant factor in the control of the commerce of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and Lake Nicaragua is a position unique in its import ance to our national interests, Gibraltar, Aden, or the Hoephorous do not compare with it in the value of its military position. Upon its bosom an iron clad lleet may float in fresh water, in a delightful climate, surrounded by a territory producing supplies for fleets and armies. The construction ol the canal will be a practical, friendly and complete vindication of the Monroe doctrine, assuring our friendly and paramount influence with our sifter-republics of North and South America. The Pacific states appeal to the patriotic impulses of all Americans By journejm over trackless plains or aronnd the Ccne our pioneers paved the way (or us.aud laid the foundation of our Pacific empire The tune has come when our east ern lellow-countrymen can aid lis and in so doing, honor and benefit our whole country and the coin mercial world. The political con sideration of the canal can have only one result with patriotic, Intel ligent Americans, it must con vince them of the necessity of an inter-oceanic canal under Amer ican control. It would be unfortun ate beyond comprehension if the day should come when the great canal, under the control of a rival maritime power, should become a menace to our interests instead of a peaceful highway for the world's commerce, and a monument to American statesmanship and to American energy. It is believed the cause for his resignation is a desire to resume ins iitetuue laoors in the newspa per profession, and is in accordance with the understanding reported at the time that he probably would not remain in Paris for the full tenure of this administration. He has successfully conducted the negotiations for the removal of the plishing one of the most beneficial acts of the administration. A Writer in the Inter-Ocean answering the statement that there is no reference to the tariff iu the book of books, says: The word tariff may not be in the bible, nor do I think you could readily find the word Methodist there. However, if you read the ninth verse of the ninth chapter of Matthew you may be convinced that custom houses existed in time of the Saviour, and that he chose Matthew, whom he found 'sittiug at the receipt of custom," for his first disciple. A learned Methodist minister long ago sent me the fol lowing, which I copy: "Some oue asked His disciples if the Master paid tribute. When His disciples came to Him He gave them this question: 'Of whom do the kings of the earth receive tribute, of their own children or of strangers? They say to Him: 'Of strangers.' lie replied: 'Then arc the children free. " WE MUST CONTROL THE NICA RACUA CANAL.
