"While we were in camp with Mc Clellan," he began, "we had some good horses which were worked jnst about hard enough to keep thein in fine condi tion. Several of thein were pretty good steeplechasers, too, but Colonel Blank had a sorrel mare which could outrun anything in the Army of the Potomac Well, one day a lot of recruits came into camp. They were well supplied with tobacco and other little luxuries which help to make a soldier's life bearable. "Some of the boys who had been in camp quite a long time looked enviously . on the well filled canteens and haver sacks of the newcomers, and it was, per haps, natural that they should begin to scheme to try to secure some of the lux uries for themselves. "The idea struck some one to get up a hippodrome horse race. The scheme was of course to have Colonel Blank's mare run against some of the poorer ani mals. And to have those who were 'in' on the deal to bet against the 6orrel mare. The rider of the mare, of course, would be a party to the deal and he would prevent the 6orrel from winning the race. "Well, the details were all arranged and the plans were working nicely. The newcomers had heard all about the fame of the sorrel mare and they took the bait like a charm. All kinds of articles were wagered tobacco, whisky, coats. boots, and not a small amount of money on the result. We who had put up the job were laughiEg in our sleeves for three days before the race took place "On the day designated the mile course, which had been laid out on a fairly good road, was lined with blue coats from one end to the other. When the horses took their places visions of the luxuries which I have named loomed up in our imaginations and we exchanged sly winks as the horses came down past the starter. As soon as the starter yelled 'Go! the men m the two long lines began to yell and swing their hats in the air. "The space between these two lines was not more than fifteen or twenty feet wide and this unusual sight and noise frightened the sorrel mare. Well, she just took the bit between her teeth and the way she did skip down that road was a caution. The faster she ran the more the men yelled and the rider could no more check her speed than he could stop a cyclone. At the end of the mile the sorrel led her opponent by fully 300 yards, and not satisfied with this she ran nearly another mile before her rider could stop her." New York Tribune. Sanitation at Cheap Restaurant. The frequenters of some of the cheap restaurants of our large towns would probably suffer from a painful falling off in the appetite were they first to pay .1 visit to the kitchens from which their savory morsels come. In the interests of their hunger they doubtless show sound discretion in taking the goods the gods of the gridiron send them without ques tioning or demur. On the other hand, in the interest of sanitation and public welfare, it is quite as important that the cleanliness of our restaurant kitchens should be beyond suspicion as that of our baking establishments. The local authorities are empowered by the sanitary acts to deal with any work place which is not kept in a cleanly state, or not properly ventilated, etc., 60 as to be injurious or dangerous to health. It would be interesting to know what attention .the local authorities have shown to these establishments. Hospi tal. Something About Money. There is no place on this wide earth of ours where there is nothing to sell or no money to buy with. The kinds of money people are forced to use would make our boys who are familiar with gold, silver and crisp green paper laugh. Think of currency all the way from strips of odor iferous dried fish to beautiful nature pol ished sea shells and bright birds plum age. Of course we 6peak of money in its broad sense, meaning something con venient to carry, of a standard value, to be used in exchange or trade: something that costs labor to get or make, and of which every man thinks it would be good to get plenty. The pieces of leather of the Greeks with the rude figure of an ox scratched upon them, standing for a real ox, were just like our bank notes. Philadelphia Press. When Silk Was More Precious Than Gold. Common as is silk nowadays, in earlier times it was a most precious material. When it was first brought into Europe silk commanded three times its weight in gold, and so valuable was it deemed that in the reign of Tiberius a law was passed forbidding it to all save noble ladies, and prohibiting men from wear ing it on the grounds of its effeminacy. So unusual was it even 200 years later for a man to wear silk that every histo rian of the time cf f eliogabalus noted the fact that that emperor had a silk gown. For ages it continued at an ab normally high price. Charlemagne, in the year 780, could send to King Offa of ilercia no more valuable present than two silk coats. St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Problematic Sculptures. The valley of John Day river, a mod est tributary of the Columbia, seems to have become a rendezvous of far west ern archaeologists. Sculptures, carved into a basaltic ledge of that neighbor hood, are supposed to represent "anthro poid apes," and the question is where the Oregon Indians could have seen the orig inals of those emblems. In Sumatra, India, or some ape haunted region of the western continent? The British consul at Hankow, in his report, mentions that the varnish ex ported from that port is the gum of the rhus vernicifera. On this tree before daylight incisions are made; the gum that runs out is collected in the dark and strained through a cotton cloth bag, leaving behind a large amount of dirt and refuse. This operation can only be performed in the dark, as light spoils the gum and causes it to cake, with all the dirt in it. It cannot be strained in wet weather, as moisture causes it to solidify. When the Chinese use the varnish they rub it on with a sort of mop made of 6oft waste silk. It should also be ased in wet weather, as, if the atmosphere is dry when it is rubbed on it will always be sticky. As used by the Chinese it takes about a month to dry. During the time it is drying it is poisonous to the eyes. London Times. A Man Who Tried to Be a Giant. John Laws Milton, an English writer and author, states that in his youthful days he wanted to be a giant, "and sev eral times thought he had discovered an infallible method of attaining the object of his ambition, such as overfeeding, stretching by dint of violent jerks from beams, etc., to the great amazement of his relatives and friends." Mr. Milto may well congratulate himself that he did not succeed, as giants are seldom bright in intellect, rarely in good health and universally shortlived. Rapid de cay seems to naturally follow rapid and excessive development. New York Times. The Talipot Palm of Ceylon. The talipot palm of Ceylon has gigan tic fanlike leaves, which when fully ex panded form a nearly complete circle thirteen feet in diameter. Large fans made of them are carried before people of rank among the Cinghalese; they are also commonly used as umbrellas, and tents are made by neatty joining them together. They are used as a substitute for paper, being written upon with a stylus. Some of the sacred books of the Cinghalese are composed of strips f them. Washington Star. Among the tribes of Asia, besides those used for food, one variety of mush room is utilized in making snuff and another for producing intoxication, one mushroom making a man drunk for a whole day. The same specimen is also converted into a "fly killer" for European use. In the hippopotamus the eyes, ears and nostrils are set exactly on the same plane. This enables the animal to sink its body entirely below the Burface of the water and yet be able to perceive the approach of foes by hearing, sight and scent. The Mexican government has been ex perimenting with a new machine for manufacturing ramie. The machine made one and a quarter tons per day and the expense of cleaning the fiber was only 4 7-10 cents per pound. The Forth bridge was built between 1881 and 1890, and during that interval nine other cantalever bridges were con structed, six of them in the United Statea . It is suggested that the cat knows by happy experience what the "lap of lux ury" means when ah steals into the pantry and licks the ertam off the milk. We are led to beleive that a eroodly number of our people arejworking an injustice to our city by trading with other towns, particularly Omaha. In go ing to other towns to trade there are always two phases of the matter to consider. The first is, can I really buy goods mere, lor less money i than 1 can at home. Only yesterday we talked witn a man who wasadvised to buy a suit of clothes in Omaha, but upon in vestigation he discovered that he could do better at home and bought the clothes of our own merchant. Then, secondly, granting that the troods may be boucrht there, for less ready money than here, there is a question of futurity involved in the transaction that should be con sidered. Every property bolder is dependent on the business interests of the city, and the home enterpris es in general, as regards the value of the propert3r, andthoughhe may trade elsewhere at a little better fig ure, in the present, it behooves him having in view his highest welfare that of enhancing the value of the property, to second every effort to raise the standard of home indus try- . A Little Boy Burned ht Ashland Yesterday afternoon Henry Jackel- lieimer and a little eight-year-old boy went to Ashland. The father purchased seme carbolic acid and, upon starting home, he gave it to the little son to carry, when the bottle was broken, spilling the con tents in the boy's lap. The father, in his excitement, drove hastily back to town and at once secured lhe services of a phy sician, but it was found that the boy's abdomen and limbs, to the knees, were burned to a crisp. The sufferiner of the little fellow must have been indescribable, as the acid slowly but surely burned its way through the flesh. He died at 9 o'clock last night. The Colorado Cactus Concert Co., which played to a good house at Kockwood Hall on last Saturday night, has been persuaded to re peat the concert at Kockwood Hall on next Saturday night, Aug. 29.
