While hunting partridges near lenuul
Swa.np, in (Tiftoa tow nship, last fall,
Aaron Ihdgood saw a fox scrambling
around in a mud puddle at a great rate,
lie wa - iutei -est id in the aiiimai's ipicer
antt; .-. aruj after he had wai.hed the
lively fox for awiiiio he came io the con
chtsion that it was catchitig frogs, or at
least Irving to catch them. Its tail was
eo- ; ; d with mud, and it was hopping
and jumping .ito.uid b: mud and wate r
upo'i its belly when Jhdgood stoh; up
near enough to see that the dIv fellow
was really gobbling up a frog every few
seconds. Ilidgood said he didn't care to
molest it just then, and while he was
watering its ..;?pers from the midst of a
clump of bushes another i,a, pjirently
the lirst one's mate, sprang into the rnuii
hole from the opposite side and went to
eatrkbvg the long legged occupants of
the puddle on iis own liook. When Bid
good had looked at the cunning freg onc
ers as long as he cared to, he yelled, mi 1
the tw mud covered foxes floundered
out 1 f the puddle in h hurry and scam
pered directly toward the. clump of
hushes w here the hunter was concealed.
They were very iiuj.di frightened, a el
the mud on their bu:-hy tails and in th-v'r
long fur kept their speed down consici
erabivg . and when they came along Bid
good kilied each of them with a cha; .'

A fox that had been chased by a hound
for ten hours lost its life in a peculiar
way in the Lackawanna valley late on a
day in January. Iieynard had been pur
sued until he was pretty well tuckered
out. and lie ran down into the vah'ey
from the Spring Brook side, lie pointed
for the Lackawanna river, but near the
I tank lie changed his course, swung
around a large coal breaker, and ran up
Ji? steep iiichne to the head house at the
top of the breaker. Through the head
'muse he dashed, and then ran aic;:g a
beam, sprang from the end of it to a
ei'.hn pile, and scampered up the refuse
railroad track to the summit, where culm
vas dumped. At the dump the fox
darted pa-t a lxy and a mule, and started
;,- sdide down the steep pitch of loose
mine refuse toward the river. The base
of the culm pile has been on tire for sev
eral years, the fire extending up the side
for forty or fifty feet. When the fox
had Iwgun to slide dow n he couldn't stop
himself, and he felid right into the mass
cf .dewing anthracite and was so badly
burned bcto-e he got through it that he
1-iy down and died doac to the river
bank. The hound, inside 'of hajt" an
hour, loped up the incline to the head
house. It nosed around and hayed for a
few .seconds, lost the scent, and then
da', ed down the slope to a spot where it
had left the level ground. There it got
on the track again, and when H started
up the plane the second time one of the
men threw chunks of cord St it and it
wen: yelping out of sight. yeraiuou

swept around the western base of Porcupine
butt?, Mrs. Amory called attention to a con
tinuous discharge of steam that rose to an
immense height about a mile distant, und
suggested the propriety of hastening in order
to sco au eruption of the Fountain. Know
ing well the location of the Fountain geyser,
I had no hesitation in deciding that the great
steam dischargea we were witnessing could
not l-o that of the Fountain, but must be an
ent irely new out break, caused doubtless by
the ecrttupuakci.
Nor could I remember seeing anything in
that neighborhood that could possibly have
developed into a great steam-aqueous geyser
of the tirst magnitude, except the Bat's Wing,
a mi let geyser of the gas-aqueous variety,
find out tnat had been growing less and less
every year from tao. fact that the two wings
of the twin lake that composed it had been
steadily depositing a white silicate substance
rescnibiir.g isinglass. This deposition goiug
on much faster in winter, Indicated, Judging
from the rapidity w ith which the lakes have
beeu diminishing since ISSo, that in a few
years the Bat's Wing would beeomo a subter
ranean lake, frozen over, so to speak, by the
accumulating deposits.
TUE TEHPEST.
On reaching the scene of activity we soon
realized that there was much more than
steam. There was a turbulent roar as fit
great w .?. ves dashing against each other, im
mediately after which wave after wave swppt
outward and drove us from the position we
had taken. Then there was a moment's lull,
at which time wo followed the receding
waves a few yards, to be driven back as soon
as the et thing caldron had accumulated
fresh energy to hurl agaiu its colliding waves
into the air and outward iu a vast circular
sweep of over ISO yards.
As the suu rose higher we got an occasional
glimpse of the great torrid waves that dashed
into each other and rose to the height of over
sixty feet, or it might have beeu even twice
that height, as it was impossible to see how
far these waves ascended amid the dense
tlc;.n.: that enveloped them, as mountain
peaks are often hidden iu misty mantles of
gray.
"What a tcrriiic tempest!" I exclaimed,
addressing Mrs. Amory, the lady who had
been the first to call attention to this uew and
extraordinary gusher.
"it is a tempest, indeed," t-ha replied,
''and,'' added Mrs. Waters, f it could have no
more suitable name if you were to hunt the
encyclopedias for mouth,'1 And amid the
roar of the contending waves, burled from a
bubterraneau boiling sea, we concurred in
naming it the Tempest ge3"ser.
Before leaving the Tempest I instituted a
-on.rch for the twin lake that I had named
the Lisas W;..g geyser as long ago as
but it was no.vnere to t found. Tbi? infer
ence to be drawn from all the facts is that it
had beeu buried by a process of self sealing,
and tht The subterranean gases at this and
other points were powerful enough when
their outlets are closed to cause au euxth
quake and culminate in just such exhibitions
of volcanic energy as that seen at the ilurri
ta?o and Whirlpool geysers iu the Norris
basin, the Black volcano on the Yellowstone
river, the Excelsior i. e., IleiPs liaif Acre
ou the vet side of the Firehole river, and
the more recent Temjiest ou the east tide of
the same river and about three miles lower
down. G. L. Honderson ia St. Taul Pioneer
