It is not strange that the old time
democrats and the new should differ end
quarrel with one another on the tariff,
the whiskey and the' spoils, but it is sad
that they cannot see how rediculous they
make themselves when they pitch into
their own dear adopted child, the pres
ent tariff, and try to make others
believe that in doing so they are fighting
ihc republican?. In as much as the pres
ent tariff is just what the last democratic
congress left to tho country, the
republicans cau well afford to let the
deluded fellows who think they r.ni mount
to something in the democratic party tare
around and yell "free trade" till they
wear themselves out. Still their .art'
will not give it to them. If they ever
change the present tariff it will lie a
jumping out of the "frying pan into the
fire" with them. The republican is the
only party that can properly handle the
tariff question for the reason that they
will deal with the subject from the stand
point of broad statesmanship and will
pursue such a policy as will meet every
exigency as circumstances and times
change.

Tin sy niptoms of biliousness nre un
happily but too well known. They differ
in ditiercnt individuals to some extent,
A bilious nian is seldom a breakfast
eater. Too frequently, alas, he has an
excellent appetite for liquids hut none
for solids of a morning. His tongue
will hardly bear inspection at any time;
if it is not white and furred, it is rough
at all events.
The digestive system is wholy out of
order and diarreha or constipation may
be a symptom or the two may alternate.
There are often hemorrhoids or even loss

Tiiuki; months ago a reviseal tariff went
into ope-ralion in Mexico, which is much
"lore favorable te the United States than
the eild one was. On the same date a
istal treaty went i at effect, under the
pro', ; ;ions of which letters or packages
can be sent from any point in one coun
try te any point in another for the same
rate as betweem any two points in cither.
These regulations, although largely in
creasing our trade with our sister re pub
lic, have not proven so advantageous te
tho United States as was expected. The
cause of this is the neglect te extend the
postal numey-onler system to Mexico.
This defect in the scheme should be
remedied at the next session of congress.

It is interesting to neitice what the
denieicratic papers say in different sec
tions of the country on the tariff question.
Here in tin west, most of them are feu- a
tariff for revenue only, whatever that
meuins. Some, like our neighbor, the
Journal, .are out and out free trade. In
Ohio, they want protection; but, in such
a modified form as that only iron and
wool will be protecte d. In Pennsylvania
tlu-y want high t-.iiff on a! met every
thing, except tobacco and whiskey. In
Louisiana, they are not particular wheth
er the policy of the government is free1,
traele, high tariff, or what not. just so
their half ele:en sugar planters are pro
tected. Who wants to support a party
of so many sides on the same question?
Only those who are willing to buy a "pig
in a poke."
