the testimony of informer Rerdeli,
who testified that Dorsey paid con
gressman Belford 82,000 in a certain
check, as bis proportion of star route
proceeds. Judge "Wylie, the presiding
judge, ruled this testiinouy. out, on
the ground that tbe defense have re
fused to produce certain documentary
evidence vhich the prosecution de

Tit absurdities sod eccentricities of
congressional character are decidedly
amusing; often times they show "sun
spots" of good nature in a member's
character, which have remained for
whole session obscured by the acerbities
of debate, and the blind passion en
gendered by party strife.
Yet iu the relaxation of the closing
hours of tho session, when tho tense
strain of the protracted struggle has
given way and the members are about
to separate for their homes, we see these
hot-headed deputies shaking hands over
the bloody chasm, and apologizing to
one another aud to the country for hot
ungeiitlemaaly words, spoken in the
heat of debate.
Apropos of this is the scene between
"Sammy Cox", of N. Y., and Mr. Page
cf California, during the last moments
of the congress which has just adjourned
it was both laughable and farcical.
Mr. Page said he took back all he had
said about Mr. Cox having lo imigrate
from Ohio to Xew York to cot elected
to congress. He admitted it came from
him with very bad grace aud was entire
ly uncalled for; that he liked Kammy

than an average democraic congressman
In return for this Sammy said he loved
Mr. Page and all he had said of him
was said in pick-wickian sense; that

American commons.

national government for protection ; so
long as her flag is sovereign, the citi
zen, no difference what quarter of the
globe tie may be in, feels its protect
iug influence. This is one of the boasts
of our institutions.
People coming to Plattsuiouth will
inquire, "What kind of a government
have you got?" Is it an economical,
yet progressive one, or is it ;.u old
fogy concern ' Is it administered by
your best ckizens, or is it controlled
by the bummer element? Is it an
economical, yet liberal rule, or is it a
profligate concern, run for the personal
benefit of a few ? In fne, is it a gov
ernment of the people, by the people
and for the people?"

There is nothing gained in the way
of remodeling despotic governments
by organizations of this nature.
We can look with favor upon law
ful agitation, and if needs be, open
revolution; but there is no civilization
in this day and age, that can approve
of these communistic societies. They
are not tbe friends of the .weak and
oppressed, they are the enemies of
mankind.
