From the number of teams we no tice about Mike iSciinelbackers shops we would think Mike was putting in about twenty hours per day. An order has been issued from tne county court to Joseph E. Wood, guar dian of the estate of De'mitt Cole, to sell personal property. Wescott and Sherwood both send forth grevtingi from their new quar ters, where they may be found ready for their patrons. The big stone- which obsttucted the crossing at the post olEce corner, has been removed, and replaced with plank, which is the proper caper. The f i eight traffic over the B. & M. these days is very heavy, and extra freight trains are found necessary over this eastern division. Judge Johnson, Friday, issued mar riage license to Robert B. Carlyle and Nellie Short. She stops Short, and oon will Nellie B. Carlyle. The work of cleaning up store fronts has begun, and the winter's accumu lation of the pulverized essence of God's footstool disappears from the windows. We are Informed that if Mrs. White secures a purchaser for one of her half lots on Main street, that she will build the coining summer a brick block on the other two. A new street crossing has bten laid down between the Sstadehuan House and bank on Main street. All good thiiin come slow, and we are getting them gradually. The annual reports of Adams, guardian of i rank L. Lonsdale, arid Erhard Ileebner, guardian of Freder ick and Henry Wehns, have been flic d in the county court. li. U. Jenkmson, of Omaha, the man who put in the stone work at the Ii. & M. shops, this city, and one whom the II nit ald owns as a particular friend. was iu the ci-y Saturday arranging to commence work for the B. & M. on their TecuraMeli-Beatrice extension. Wild gees'; and ducks are coming in, nnd our rusty ninirod. are begin ning io inquire who borrowed their breech loaders aui Mackintosh waders last fall, and renewing ac quaintance with the neglected re triever. The committee appointed by the council to investigate the charges against night Policeman Lohucs we understand have had a moetiug aud that the charges are not sustained consequently Mr. Lohues will contin ue on duty. The city council ordered, and a good job has been done up at - Chicago ave enue, in fixing a temporary walk through the mud, which allows the third ward politicians to reach Main street without being swamped, which occurrence, at this season of the year, would indeed be a calamity. ilr Dawson, storekeeper for the B. &M , has returned from Denver and McCook wherein at the latter place Ike company have just com pleted and stocked a supplemental store house of about one third the capacity of the one in this city. The stock kept there comprises an assort ment of everything required by the road, aud tee building is under the care of Mr. b tiles who for some time has been Alex Campbell's assistant. Mr. Julius Pepperburg is, as usual, manufacturing his exceptionally fine brands of cigars made from pure tobacco of the best quality obtainable in eastern markets. The manufacture of cigars brings labor to the city and employs more help proportionately than almost any other branch of manufacturing. Mr. Schlegel, also in this city manufac tures cigars' and the two factories here mtk. a quality of goods far superior to eastern made goods. The IIkrald pro poses to make meution of this fact fre quently and keep it before this commu nity that dealers and consumers can both do better in patronizing home industries' where guaranteed goods are furnished, and where the labor expended in their manufacture is right at borne, and a part of the many, contributing common sup port to every business of Piattamouth. Amusement lovers will be pleased, to learn that tho management of the opera bouse here have secured Harry 'Webber for a two night's engagemen the coming month, in Lis new pi' which he has put ou the boards tbe first time this season, instead of one huiiui.-.J. sixty as stated yesterday. . - We have been assured that the fur niture factory project under diacus slon, some tfme since, has not beep abandoned ; but to the contrary,' is a coming event. - At Tecumseb, this state, they are making arrangements to secure Keene in Richard the III, in their opera house. If Keene comes to Ne braska Flattamoutb should certainly secure him for an evening. r The B. it M. commence work at once and will posh It until completed on the extention of their road from Te cumseh to Beatrice. This Is-an Im portant link in their' road system in this state, and is of peculiar interest to both the terminal points of the ex tention. ' The time for the candidates' for mu nlclpial honors to hoist .their banners draws nigh, and if there arjs any who have made no record but are anxious to do so, or that, have made a record aud want it exposed let tnem ; make their wants known, and the usual programme ill lo carried out in detail. Messrs. Grace & Thierolf are com fortably fixed in their new quarters. They'.are increasing their stock of gro ceries and queeusware, and intend car rying a fctfok second to none iu the city. They are active, energetic men, and we bespeak for them the success they deserve. : . ' . Mr. Thompson has a new invention, a tire escape, which is attracting the attention of all who see it, and every one seems to think that it is bound to be a'success. The IIekald will have a debCiiption of it aa soon as the in ventor has tlie working model finish ed. Mr. Fred Oldeiihuusen and family, relatives of Pailip Horn; Adam Foi iioff. brolher-iu law of Philip Tritcti, and family, and 0 iri'st a.oi-r and i i oj- lly, relatives ot Geo. Miller," as will be noticed by his card, has removed his office from the south side of Main street to the corner of Main aud Seventh in J. II Waterman's residence. The doctor has been healing the sick In Flatts mouth for some month's past and will be found to be an agreeable, pleasant gentlemen and good physician. The Platte river is booming, a rise of 23 inches haying been recorded in the last 24 hours. The ice is being piled and tumbled about in a way that betokens no great amountof security to the bridges. A gorge has been forming at the Mo. P. railroad bridge but with a large force of ' men chop ping the ice away, no serious trouble is apprehended. Some idea of '-the magnitude of tin: travel into this llt! ut tlii.4 soasnri nf tilt! yettr can be seen when the west bound trains urrivc uud leave in this city. Thursday seventeen coaches of passengers arrived ou the two sections of the uiiiruiu ' txain from tlie east, and eleven coaches crowded so that standing room was at a premium weat westward to Lincoln aud beyond. The night train from the east that heretofore has not been heavily loaded is carrying double the p-tSsengers theo days over days not a month ago. Iu the Bonuer Ward scandal which has been on trial for some days in the first M. E. chord) in Omaha, the jury yesterday returned a verdict finding Mrs. Ward guilty of imprudent conduct and of falsehood. - This was a scandalous case involving the good name and fame o Mrs. Ward and James Bonner both memler8 of first M. E. church of Oma ha both of theso persons are now out of the church, Mr. Bonner having with drawn before the church trial and Mrs-. Word is now expelled from the church. This is as it ought to be from the testi mony adduced upon the trial; these par ties have no business in any church. Tbe Missouri at this point is intact down to the bridge, below that how ever, as far as tne island, it is open and the ice moved away and Mr. Mor gan is already making preparation to start the Belle Morgan on its sum mer's work. There is but little heard as yet con- i ceming the breaking up of the river at other points. The Nebraska City Newa has tbe following item concern ing the river at St. Joe: The river has broke at St. Joe oppo site tbe Francis street depot and above tbe bend, but there is a heavy gorge near the bridge, extending fiom shore to shore. The ice is piled up in great quantities, and tbe pressuie against the bridge is very heavy, but no dan Ker Is apprehended unless tbe river should rise suddenly. A very good one is told on the teacher out in tbe Jeans school house. It seems seme time since, the county superintendent visited the school there and iu his remarks to the pupils urged upon them the necessity of not only working themselves but making their teacher work, also that the more ear neatly they worked the more the teacher would find to do. Shortly af ter the noon hour came, and the teach er went over to ber board tug hausd It was au opportune moment for the children, and one joung America was equal to tbe occasion, be led on, and the lesson g'ven out to them to make their teacher work, was adopted in its most literal sense.
