Mr. Ezra Sampson, residing on the
old Eikeubary homestead south of
town, pronounce the doom of the
peach crop for 1883. He says after a

The Daily Herald starts out un

The spring moo die promise much to
riattsmouth in the way of business houses-
They will bring with them the com
pletion of Mr. Sherwood's Jjrick build
ing and business house ou the corner of
Main and Fifth. The removal of the
old frame hotel in block 25 on Main St.
by Mr. S. S. Billings, and the erection in
its place of a substantial brick block; al
so the erection of a brick block upon
the burnt district, in block 34, by Messrs.!
Sherwood and O'Neil and Mrs. White.
These are only a portion of the projected
improvements on Main i-treet.
It was a pitiable sight upon the
night of the performance of the "Mer
ry War," to witness one young man,
alone, piloting seven young ladies
through the mud and small boys to the
Opera House. They were 'vay up"
young ladies, too, and occupied way up
seats. It was as good as a circus to
watch the boys of "our crowd," as they
sauntered in by themselves and sought
seats in the dress circle, and casually
glanced up into the gallery the girls
were all there "seven up" and the
girls held the top hand, lioys, boys,
"perhaps you shouldu't have been
there."

At last Plaltsmouth is to have a
pork packing establishment, a firm of
energetic capitalists here having em
barked in the pork business. The
gentlemen who have made the final
effort and who are deserving the
thanks of this community, need no in
troduction to the public. They are
young men but possessed with the en
ergy to mako their efforts an entire
success. The firm consists of W. C.
Sho waiter, Fred Black and W. C.Cush
ing, and the facts that led them to
embark in this business are as follows:
Saturday night Jim Antill had a raffle
to dispose of a watch and three pigs
Thirty-six numbeied tickets were sold
at one dollar each, and the above three
drew the pigs; and are ready for bus
iness. It is rumored that Fred Black
insisted on starting a stock farm, but
the other two voted him down and we
will have a packing house; this is as
as it should be. and we have onlv one
recconienditiou to add and that is
that the man who won the watch be
employed as time-keeper in the new
pork house.
Last Saturday a well knwn Cedar
Creek J. I', was in the -si i y preparing
himself for the performance of utility
heart-rending in iis nature, solemn to

to those immediately concerned

The event transpired yesterday, a
day propitious in every respect. The

ley wrapped in all the diguity of his

tract of bops and barley had not been
forgotten, and after the transfigura

The eulertaiument ot the season
thus far, was the production of the
..erry War," last Thursday evening,
by Ilavcrly's English Opera Co. The
audience, while not so large as might
have been desired, was au apprecia
tive one, as was proven by the repeat
ed encores, which, each time, were re
sponded to. The parts were all well
taken and admirably- carried out.
Miss Dora Wiley, as Violetta, fully
sustaiued the reputation the lady has
gained as a prima donna. Richard
(Jo'uleu as the Marquis, had a good
conception of the part, and has his
singing been as good as his acflug,the
character would have been complete.
Arteuiesia r.s represented by Pauline
Hall was all that it could be. Little
Miss Richardson as Elsa, the wife of
the tulip planter, even surpassed her
self, in the manner o:her singing and
acting. Bathassar, the tulip planter,
himself was faithfully represented by
J. Ssurgis, who notwithstanding the
loss of his wife and bulbs," eutcred
into the spirit ot the scheme, nnd ac
quitted himself in fine style. . The
choruses were all evidences of skill
and training, and the appearance of so
many charming ladies and elegant
costumes ad (fed materially to the suc
cess ot the play.
The orchestra was an exceptionally
good one. Should the English Opera
Company again appear-in 1'iattsmouth
they will be greated with a house they
so well deserve, even though the
price of admission exceeds that or
dinarily charged.

Most everyone who was not born
blind knows that the stage bald head
Ian delusion and a snare. The only
all-wool, yard-wide bald head we re
member on the American stage is that
of Dunston JClrke as worn by the vet

but Couldock wears his the most. It
is the most worn, anyhow,
"What we started out to say U that
the stage bald head and whiskers make
us weary with life. The stage bald
he;ld is generally made of the internal
economy of a cow, dried so 'that it
shines, and-cut to fit the head as tight
ly as a potato sack would naturally fit
a billiard cue. It is generally about
four shades whiter than the red face
of the wearer, or vice versa. We do
not know which is the woisi violation
of eternal fitness, the red haired man
who wears a deathly white bald, or
the pale young man who wears a florid
roof on hs intellect. Sometimes in
starring through the country and play
ing to ten or ufleen hundred engage
ments a bald head gets soiled. We no
tice, that when a show gets to Laramie
the chances are that the bald head of
the leading old man is so soiled that
he really needs a sheep-dip shampoo.
Another feature of this accessory of
the stage is its singular failure to fit.
It is either a little soft at both ends,
or it hangs over the skull in large fes
toons and wens and warts in such u
way as to make the audience believe
that the wearer has dropsy of the
brain.
You can never get a stage bald head
near enough like nature to fool tbe av
erage house-fly. A fly knows in a mo
ment whether it is the genuineor only
a base im'tation, and the bald-head of
