"Itenlly I intiHt bo going home," mild MItw Chloo luiHtlly. "Mother will lw sum to want mo. I do hojio (ho weather will clear up beforo Now Year's. This rain has lasted about ns long as it's pleasant." "Yes, dint's (rue. Tho wafer is very high in (ho dam now, and, although wo draw off nil wo can, I'm afraid lliey'rb getting too much of it." "There's no danger, Is there?" asked tho girl, her faeo slightly paling ns sho sjwko. "Father has always lieen afraid of It, you know." "No; I do not think thero Is. However, I guess It'll come out till right, Miss Cliloo, I that Is, you I ineanl" mid Will Fosilick stopped. Tho girl hurriedlybrokoln: "Mr. Fos dlck, I must go. Qood-by, and don't forget!" anil with n wnvo of her hand sho dlsapiK'nred around 11 corner of tho path. Tho Httlo village of Cartersvlllo, In Colorado had grown and prospered on tho mines which made tho hills around It troasuro houses. Mr. Davis, tho father of pi 4,ty, dark eyed 18-year-old Chloe, wn tho superintendent of Southern Delle, and tall, fair haired Will Fos dlck was (ho assayer at (ho Star of (ho West. Common interests in (heir work had brought (ho two men together in (ho llrst place, but, so far as the younger was concerned, ho soon found u reason to cull on tho Davlses which had nothing to do with tho character of tho oro In tho '.'00 feet level. To stato It brletly, ho was as ilespurn(ely in lovo ns a man con' well be, but so far ho was obliged u confess with many an Inward sigh iu ho did not know if tho girl eared .. 1 him. Sho was always pleasant, always apparently glad ta see him, but ho had never been nblo to bring matters to a point, often aa ho had tried. Ills own shyness and his real belief that sho was so much better than himself had made hhn stammer and pause until sho es caned ua the 1'iu) that dfiy. Tlio villago was built in a long, slrag gllug line down (ho narrow valley lie tween tho hills. Hero and there on tho hillsides were tho mills in which tho oro was worked, and winding liko a great yellow snako tho stngo road ran liaek and forward until It ended at "Carter's," tho universal store, saloon and hotel, which might have lieen called the center of (ho place. At tho head of (ho valley was tho dam built by the mining com panies iu partnership, which stored up (ho water used in (ho mills mid which (ho fhrowdcht of tho engineers about Car(ersUUo did not beliovo particularly safe. Tho houso occupied by Mr. Davis was in tho lower part of tho villago, built of wood llko tho rest, and was a pretty place to look at in summer, with tho (lowers in front, which Miss Chloo had raited with m much care. For ten days past tho rains had been heavier than nny man remembered to have wen, and (he gullies, which were dry during (ho summer months, were now mlniadiro torrents. Tho dam was full, and tho wasteway nt 0110 sldo was open wide, while down between its rocky walls the water rushed night mid day. And during all that week it rained, rained, rained, until people lecamo seri ously alarmed over tho possible outcome. In tho mean time Will Fosdlck saw Chloo Davis threo times. Ho would have seen her more had it been possible, for corlainly there was no lack of desiro on his part. Each timo ho resolved to put his fato to tho question, but each timo ho camo away without having done so, mid thou spent an hour reviling his own timidity, which seemed to tio his tongue just when ho wnnted (o sjieak. And Miss Chlool Miss Chloe's pretty eyea sparkled as sho laughed In her mu sical fashion over her own thoughts. Miss Chloo was not afraid, for sho know. Now Year's day camo on Wednesday in 1800, nml in tho afternoon about 1) o'clock Will Fosilick camo out of tho laboratory of tho Star of tho West and looked, us ubu.i1. down tho valley to where tho Davis house stood. Ho could eeo tho figure of n girl standing iu front, and ho wondered whether ho would Imvo a chance that evening, mid if ho had it whether ho would have sand enough to ! take advantage of it. And as ho stood ft Mrt A ho heard lu tlio clear, pure air a peculiar noise, mid turning he saw aliottt half a tutlo away a fearful sight. Tho great dam was covered with a wnvo of brown wafer pouring over tho lop. As ho looked this seemed to sink down for 11 second, then rise again, and a rolling mass of water Hwept down tho narrow valley. Tho houses In lis path went down llko grass beforo a galo amid tho shrieks and cries of (ho coplo. Fosdlck himself was at a height which made him safe, and ho stood for a min ute or two like one lu a dream, pinching 1 I'l.U.NUKI) INTO Till: WATKII. himself lo make sure ho was awake It was all so horrible! lie saw n man ho know well Jack Carter start to run up (he hillside, but tho brown monster caught him and swept him down. For the part of a second Fosdlck saw them thrown into a wild heap, and then tho Hood passed over them. The water struck Carter's store, which stood for a moment, rose bodily and (touted, turn ing and swaying as though with 11 hide ous drunkenness. Then it struck ag.iinst an oro houso unci seemed to crutiiblu down lulu tho surging Hood, carrying with it two men and a woman with a child iu her arms, who had elimled out on the loof. Onco a man's body was shot up by tho water until It stood waist high, and the man struggled, waving his arms ami trying to cscajie. Then he was dragged down by tho legs by (he in carnate cruelty which had thus given him a glimpse of life, only to snatch it from htm forever. Will Fosdlck Hturtcd as though struck by a bullet. Iu watching tho frightful tragedy beforo him ho had forgotten Chloo. Was sho safe? Ho turned and looked eagerly down the valley. For a moment 1 mist seemed to blur his eyes. "r- - Tin: iti-sci'iu and then he saw clearly tho houso was not there. By a determined effort ho turned and walked slow ly back and for ward n few times, for bo realized that foro all things it was necessary for in to bo cool and to show a level head. . ,un bo looked out lieforo htm. The Hood of water was nearly a ipinr 'r of a mtlo wide. It had evidently d- 1 roj ed tlio greater part of the vlllugo, and although thcio was no longer a tor rent, yet tho current was very swift To reach tho phico where tho Davis houso stood Will Fosdlck would have had to cross tho water, and this, as thero was not a boat in tho village was imiossi ble. There was u chance, porhaps, to cross about llvo miles down, where tho valley narrowed to tlio Needles, two great spires of rock which had had a bridge thrown across between them for the use of two mines, 0110 on either side, and Will Fosdlck started as rapidly as he could walk. It was a dreary trip, with evidences on every sido of tho awful destruction which had been wrought by tho water. Ho camo across (ho body of a man, tho ekull smashed iu, which had been left on tho ground by tho first great wave, and with a shudder recognized it as that of Mr. Brooks, tho superintendent of (ho Star of (ho West. Ho paused long enough to cover it with stones so (ho coyotes could not get at it. About n milo from tho Needles, as Will Fosdlck was picking his way among tho Btones which covered tho ground, ho heard a sound ns though somo one were sobbing. Ho halted and listened. There could bo no doubt that it was a woman crying. In his intense drain) to search for Mr. Davis' houso ho may bo pardoned if ho hesitated for u moment before go ing to tho rescue. Ho thought of Chloo; ho was thinking of nothing else, mid it seemed to drivo him wild tho uncer tainty about her fato. Only for a mo ment, though, did ho pauso, for Will Fos ilick was a man beforo all else, and then turning ho mado his way down to tho water's edge. Thero, about n hundred yards out wore two rocks, between which somo fencing or wreckage of some kind hnd wedged, nml clinging to tho wood was a woman. Will, Fosdlck looked and wondennl if it could bo dono. It was only a hundred yards, but it was a terrible job. Tho brown water rolled swiftly by at his feet, and down tho swirling stream camo logs and tioards and furniture, making tho way utmost Impassable. If tho woman was to bo eaved thero was no time to Imj lost. Running up tho hank three hundred yards Will Fosilick throw oft his coat and plunged into tho water. It caught hold of him with tho grip of uatrong man mid dragged him down until his feet touched tho ground. With n tre mendous effort ho sprang up, and reach ing tho top struck out, fighting his way inch by inch out towanl tho rocks. A heavy board chatscd. tlflwn at hliu, and I lietuckeil Jvit lu timo to save his head; 1 ho met a rwfllo of wreckago and was I forced to 'Twl over it, cutting his leg on a sharp nail. Bit by bit ho worked j ahead, but all the while ho was being swept down tho stream, and ho know I tho etinvnt through tho Needles must bo 1 death. Nearlng tho lower rock ho mado 1 11 determined dash for it, only to bo ! driven off by a timber nml carried down. 1 For a moment he thought his life had been risked in vain, when tho current thickened and ho found himself floating to tho rock In nn eddy. Reaching it and crawling up ho lay for a moment to pather breath aud a Httlo strength bo foro attempting the rescue or tho wom an he camo to save. Then climbing over the top ho lowered himself down. As ho saw tho brown hair a quick throb sturtled him, ami iu tho whisper of ex citement ho called. Tho woman raised her head and his look met Chloe's eyes! It did not take Will Fosilick two sec onds to leap down and seize the girl, to lift her up into his arms and to carry her up on tho rock. It was as though ho had tho strength of ten men! Then hold ing her tight ho kissed her xisslonately. Thero was no more shyness, no inoro hesitation; ho lmd rescued his lovo from death, mid he had her safe. Aud Cliloo ptn her head down on his shoulder and sobbed, clinging to hhn closely and now and then trembling violently. Death had been very near to her that day! "How on earth did you get hero, my darling?" ho naked when tho girl liecnmo n little quieter. "I don't know, Will. I was standing in front of tho houso when suddenly tho water swept mo off my feet. It rolled mo over and over; It seemed to press mo to death. I felt something ami caught hold of it, and then I faiutod. How long it was beforo I camo to myself I do not know, but when I woke up I was lying on somo Inxirds which woro flouting on tho water. 1 pulled myself upon them and watted. I was sure I would die, mid I thought about you" "My own lovo!" "I thought you must bo dead, nud I did not cam nuch whether 1 was saved. Then 1 crir-1, thinking I would never see you again." "That was what 1 heard, my darllngl" "Did you know It was me?" "No. I was hurrying down to cross at the Needles and I heard tho cry." "And you were going to save me, but stopped for another girl?" said Cliloo, with something of her own tone. "Oh, Will!" "Well, dearest, t could not leave a woman to die." began Will. "Well, dear," said tho girl very softly nml earnestly, "don", you know how proud I am of you for doing it? Don't 1 know how you wanted to go on and look for me? And then if you had not I should have died. But how did you get out here?" "I swam out." "What! Across that awful place?" asked tho girl with 11 shudder, clinging closer to him. "Yes. It wasn't so bad. I'd swim twenty of them to hold you in my arms, Chloo, and knew you lovo me. You do lovo 1110, don't you?" "Yes," sho whispered. "You never let me know it." "You never asked me." she nnswen'd with laugh. "But, Will, how can wo get ashore? I want toknow how mother is and if she's safe." "Wo can't get ashore till tho water goes down. You could never live hi cross (hat current. But, Chloe, look there! That's your house there, stranded just this sido of that oint." "So it is, and there's mother looking out ot tlio window. Is it safe there?" "Perfectly; tho water is going down. Is your father at homo?" "No; ho went ncross tho mountains this morning. But what an awful thing this is!" And bo, talking over tho horror of tho Hood, and nt times talking about their lovo, tho two stnld on tho rock all that night. Will contrived to make u firo nt which thoy dried their clothes, and by early morning tho wator had gone down enough to let him carry her ashore. They mado their way to tho house, where Mrs. Davis kissed and hugged her daughter as 0110 raised from tho dead. Mr. Davis camo homo about noon to find all well and safe. Ho and Will Fosilick joined tho men who were bring ing thof-o who had cscutietl togother, and tho Davin houso wan mado into some thing liko a hospital beforo night. Help camo from tho surrounding towns, and gradually tilings began to look well again. It was nearly tho end of March beforo Will Follicle and Chloo Davis were married, but as ho was then tho superintendent of tho Star of tho West thoy had tv good start. But neither of them will over forget tho Ho 1, nor tho swim which Will took iu tho swirling brown water to reach tho rock whero lto could rescuo tho "other girl," and wlicro ho found his love mid his wife.
