Darius was king of Ilnhylon, nml tho

exciting tho envy nnd jealousy of tho peo

Itlea that they woro nITrouted at thu uluva

Thvsa demagogues asked thu king to

Darius, not suspecting any foul play, tnakea

that no one ran keen Daniel from sending
petitions before (2od for thirty days
So far from lielug ufralil, Daniel goes on
wltl his supplications three times a day,
and is found on his housetop making
prayer, lie Is caught In tho net Ho U
comlotnned to Itu devoured bv the lions
Hough executioners of tho law selo him
and hasten hltn lo the cavern, I hear llm
growl of thu wild bentN, and I seu them
pawing thu dust, and as they put their
mouths to tho ground tho solid earth
quakes with tholr bellowing. I seo their
e)es roll, and I almost hoar tho llery eje
balls snap In thu darkness. These mounters
approach Daniel They havo nn nppetlto
keen with hunger With una stroke of
their paw or ona snatch of their teeth they
may leave him dead at tho bottom of tho
cavern. Hut what a ntraugo wolcomo
Daniel receives from these hungry mon
sters! They fawn around him, they lick
his hand; they bury Ids feet In their long
manes. That night ha has calm sleep, with
his head pillowed on tho warm necks of
tho tamed Hoiis.
iTfij LIONS' MOUTHS WKItK SHUT.
Hut not bo well doc Darius tho king
sleep. Ho loves Daniel, and hates this
tratauum by which ho has been con
demned. All night long tho king walks
thu Moor. Ho cannot sleep. At thu least
Bound ho starts and his Itesh creeps with
horror. Ho la Impatient fur tho dawning
of tho morning. At thollrststieak of tho
daylight Darius hastens forth to seo tho
fate of Daniel. Tho heavy palace doom
open aivl clung shut long bcfnru tho peoplo
of tho city waken. Darius goes to tho don
of lions; ho looks In. All is silent. His
heart stops. Hu feels that tho very worst
has happened; but Katheriuit all his
strength ho shouts through tho rifts of tho
rock, "O Daniel! Is tho God whom thou
servest continually able to deliver theof"
Thoro comes rolling up from thu deep dark.
nes u voice which says: "O ktugl llvo for
ever. My God has sent his angel to shut
tho lions' mouths that they havo not hurt
me."
Then Daniel Is broughtout from tho don.
Tho dotnngoguea nru hurled Into It, and no
sooner huvo they struck tho bottom of thu
don than their flesh was rent, and tholr
bones cracked, and thoro blood spurted
through thu rifts of tho rock, and as the
lions maku tho rocks tremble with their
roar thoy announco to all ages that while
God will defend his peoplo tho wa of tho
ungodly shall perish.
Learn tlrst from this subject that tho
greatest crtmo that you can commit in thu
oyes of many is tho crime of success. What
had Daniel done that ho should bo Hung to
the llonsf Ho got to bo prime minister.
Thoy could not forglvu hltn for tiat, and
behold In that a touch of unsauctilled hu
man nature as seen In all ages of thu world.
So long as you are pinched In poverty,
so long as you are running the gantlet
between landlord and tax gatherer, so long
lut you II ml it hard work to educato your

Out after n whllo the tldo turns In your
favor. That was a profitable Investment
you, made, rYou bought-at just tho right
time. Fortune becomes good humored
nnd smiles upqn yon. Now you are being
in some department successful your suc
cess chills some oue. Those men who used
to sympathize with you stand along thu
street, and thoy scowl at you from under
the rim of thli. ha! You Imva more
money or Ciru lutluoncOinn thoy have,
and on ought to bo scowled! vt from under
the rim of their hats. You atchtiword
or two .J you passed by th(m. "Stuck

another, "Will burst soou," mjs a third.
Eeryttono In your new bousu is laid on
yliclr hearts. Your horseV hoofs went over
tholr nerves.
Every item of your success has been to
them nn item of discomfiture and despair.
Justus soon as In any respect you rlso
above your fellqws, If you nru more virtu
ous, It you aro more wise, if you are more
Influential, you cajt it shadow on tho pro
pect of others. Tho road tojionor aud
.success Is 'vflfhln reach of tho enemy's
guns. Jealousy says, "Stay dowu or I'll
Knock you down." "I do not llko you,"
said OiosuowilakoU)tUosn,owblrd. "Why
don't you Mko mo?" said tlib snowbird.
"Oh!" said tho snowflake, "you are going

chants, young lawyers, young doctors,
young mechanics, young artists, young
farmers, at certain times there were thoe
to sympathize with you, but now that you
aro becsmlng master of your particular oc-
cupatjQU or profession, how Is tt now,
young lawyers, young doctors, young art
ists, young farmers how Is tt now? Thu
greatest crime thut you can commit Is tho
crime of suet ess.
Again, my subject impresses me with
tho valuuof dectslou of character in any
department. Uauiel know that If he con
tinued Ids udhereuco to tho religion of tho
Lord he would bo hurled to the lions, but
having set his compass well ho sailed
right on.

For the lack of that clement of decision
ot character so eminent In Daniel many
tnon uro ruined for this world, aud ruined
for tho world to coma A great many at
40 j ears of nge are not settled In any ru

make up their mind. Perhaps they will

haps they will not. Perhaps they will go

bupi they will, not. Perhaps they may
make thut Investment In real estate or lu
railroads. Perhaps they will not. They
are llko a steamer ibai should bo outol

Oh, joiitig man, huvo dectslou of charoc
ter. You raualTonl lu this matter of re
ligion to I mi laughed at. What do you
euro for the scolfs of theso men, who aro
ulTroiiled because you will not go to ruin
with tlicuif When tho grirve cracks open
under their feet, and grim messengers push
them Into It, and eternity comes dowu
hard upon their spirit, and conscience
stings, and hopeless ruin lifts them up to
hurl them down, will they laugh theur
I leiirn also from my subject that men
tuny take religion Into their worldly husl
uess. Daniel had enough work to do to
occupy six men All the affairs of statu
weru In Iris hands questions of finance,
questions of war, of H-acu, all International
questions weru for his settlement or ad
justment. Ho must havo had a corre
spondence vast beyond all computation.
Tlieiu was not a man lu ull tho earth who
had more to do than Daniel, tho secretnry
of state, and jet we find htm three, times n
ilny bowing beforo God In pruer, Thero
are men lu our day who havo not a hun
dredth part of Daniel's engagements who
say they aro too busy to bo religious. They
havo an Idea somehow that religion will
spoil their worldly occupation, that It will
trip the accountant's pen, or dull the car
penter's saw, or confiisa thu lawyer's brief,
or disarrange thu merchant's store shelf.
INCONVKNIKNT ItRt.KUOX.
They think religion Is Impertinent, They
would llkotohao It very well Heated be
side them In church on tho Sabbath, to tlud
tho place In tho psalm book, or to nudge
them itwaka when thoy get sleepy under
the didactic discourse; or they would llko
to leuvo it In the pew on Sabbath evening,
as they go out closing tho door, saying,
"Good night, religion; I'll be back next
Sumlayl" Hut to huvo religion go right
along by ttum all through life, to havu re
ligion looking over their shoulder when
they aro making a bargain, to havo religion
tako up a bag of dishonest gold and shake
It, and say, "Hal hat where did you get
that?" they think that Is an Impertinent
religion. They would llko to havo a relig
ion to help thorn when they aro sick, and
when tho shadow of death comes over them
they would llko to have religion as u sort of
night key with which to open the door of
heaven; but religion under other circum
stances they take to bo an Impertinence.
Now, my friends, religion never robbed a
man of a dollar. Other things being equal,
n mason will build n better wall, u cabinet
maker will make a bettor chair, a plum!cr
will mal'oa better plpc.n lawyer will mako
u liettcr plea, a merchant will soil n better
bill of goods.
I say other things being equal. Of
course when religion gives a man a now
heart it tloes not propose to giva him a
now head, or to Intellccttmllzu him, or to
change a man's condition when his ordi
nary statu is an overthrow of tho philo
sophical theory thatu total vacuum is' Im
possible; but tho more letters )ou havo to
write, tho more burdens jou havo to carry,
tho more tulles you have to travel, thu
more burdens you have to lift, tho more
ciiKagomcuts you havo to meet, thu more
disputes you huvo to settle, tho more oppor
tunity you havo of Wing a Christian.
IIAlin WOltK ANl UKUOION.
If you havo a thousand Irons In the flro
you havo a thousand tnoru opportunities
of serving God than If you had only one

And yet who a millionth part us holyf
Tho busiest men thu liest men. All thu

attending to his custom house duties; tho
Prodigal Sou feeding swine. Lydia Belling

ward Damascus, going dowu on his law
business. Ilusyi busy! Daniel with all
the ufTuIrs of statu weighing dowu upon
his soul, and yet three times a day wor
shiping thu God of heaven.
Again, I learn from this subject that a
man may tako religion Into his politic.
Daniel hud ull the atlalrs ot state on hand,
vet a Christian. He could not huvo kept
his elevated position unless he hud been u
thorough politician; ami , yet ull tho
thrusts of olllciuls and all the du.iiger of
disgraco did not mako him yield oho iota
of his high toned religious principle. He
stood before that nge, ho stands Ixrfore all
ages, a specimuu of a, Christian politician.
So there havo been lu our day and In tho
days of our fathers men as eminent in the
service of God as they have been eminent
In thu service ot tho state. Such was Hen

Daniel stood on a most unpopular plat
form He stood (Irmly, though the ileum-gogue-sof

to overthrow him. We must carry our
religion Into our politics. Hut there aro
a great many men who aro in favor of
taking religion Into national ihiIUIcs who
do not see thu Importance of taking it Into
city politics; us though a man were Intel

Mystibjeit also Impresses mo with tho
fact that lions cannot hurt it good man.
No man ever got Into worsu company than

saw that Hon of financial panic putting

mestic hearth. You have had trial after
trial, misfortune after misfortune, lion
nfter Hon, uiul yet they havo never hurt
you If you put your trust in God, and
they never will hurt j-ou. They did not
hurt Daniel, nnd they cannot hurt you.
THAits Of soitltow.
Tho Persians used to think that spring
rain falling Into sea shells would turn into
pent Is; nnd I Iiumi to tell you that tho tears
of sorrow turn Into precious gems when
they drop Into God's iHittlu You need 1
afraid of nothing putting your trust In
God. Een death, that mnusterllon whose
den Is tho world's Hcpulclier, and who puts
his paw down amid thousands of millions
of thu dead, cannot all right jou.
When In olden times a uian was to get
tho honor of knighthood hu was compelled
to go fully armed the night livforii among,
thu tomlx of thu dead, carrying a sort of
spenr, nnd then when tho day broke ho
would come forth, and amid the sound of
cornet and great parade ho would get thu
honors or knighthood. And ho It will Im
with tho Christian in tho night beforo
heaven, as fully armed with spear and hel
met of salvation he will wait and watch
through thu darkness until thu morning
dawns, and then he will tako the honors
of heaven amid that great throng with
snowy robes streaming ver stu of sajt

Some tlmo ago a prominent scientist
lectured in one of tho leading churches of
thu city, and, In the course of an hour's
talk, undertook to show thu relation be

that ho was not as clear us was expected,
It may be that the arguments of a scientist
were too deep for thu audience, and still
again it Is possible that tho warm evening
produced a drowsiness that drugged the
he uses of tho hearers At all events, tho
relationship sought to bo established was
not very sharply outlined to tho audience
despite the number of degrees the speaker
has had tacked to his uamo liy institutions
of learning, and its the learned man ceased

closing hymn, "Nobody Knows but Jesus."
Tho look of doubt vanished as bright
smiles beamed throughout tho hall, and
the hymn was sung with an emphasis.

Deliberation.
Thero Is much to Ihi said In favor of
wisely deliberating liefore acting. Doubt
less many rash deeds uro performed, bring
ing all sorts of unfortunate consequences
In their train, simply for tho want of a lit
tlo rellection, and others, that would have
liecn of tho utmost benefit to mankind,
havu never seen thu light from tho sumo
cause. Yet whllo this is truo thero Is a
kind of delllsjratiou much practised wh'cli
Is nearly alwaj-s pernicious In ItH results
upon future action. It is thut which puts
aside tho first instinctive perceptions of
right nnd wrong, speculates upon them,
doubts them, subjects them to processes of
casuistical reasoning, and generally ends
either by so clouding the mental vision
thut no distinct course is visible, or by act
ually making the worse appear tho (letter
cause. Much of the wrong doing of the
world Is the fruit of this kind of delibera
tion. New York Ledger.
