T1IK MONUMKNT TO HEXPHICKB.
More than two years ago tlio admirer of
Thomas A. Ilondrlckn raised funds for tlio
urectlon of 11 monument to his memory 1
nuil tlio accompanying cut shows what (ho
work (now nrarly completed) will look
llku when It sliall Iki unveiled, on or ahont
July -1, this year. Tim coit of tlio entire
work, pedestal, statue iiud ornamuiitatloii,
1h figured at f 10,000, anil It mild that no
work equal to It lias ever lieen completed
for tlio sumo amount of money.
The pedestal Is of Unlit coral granlto
from tlio Ilavauo qtwrlcs In Italy, and It,
with tlio foundations, Is Iwlng put in place
under tliu personal supervision of Mr C.
U. Caulluld, president of the Nuw Kngluiul
Monument uompauy. The pedestal stand
011 11 biixo 29 feet Iouk mxl -1 feet wide, con
sisting of three courses, forming steps
ahout 12 Inches wide. In each side of tlio
monument Is 11 niche, tlio 0110 lu front con
taining decorations, tlio one to tlm west
helng vacant, mid those to the north and
south containing figures of Justice and
History, Four fluted columns nro at tlio
corners, each surmounted by a globe.
Over these i.s tlio dome stone, hearing tin)
capdlo on which stands tlio statue which
rowns the work.
The front ulchu hears the iiaini) Hen
drleks In sunken letters. Thin Is the only
inscription 011 the monument. Hcneath Is
a hronze wreath of laurel and oak leaves,
which Is about three feet In diameter. Tlio
casting of this wreath was done at tlio
Royal foundry at Rome, and the wreath
Itself was a prlzoc.xhlbltluu at Paris, where
the sculptor who has tlio contract for tlio
wliolo work bought It. Natural leaves
were used for the models.
Mr. Hendricks' statue is of course thu
principal thing of note In tlio monument.
It is of heroic slzo and wilt faco to tlio
southeast. It Is fourteen feet six Inches in
height, and Is cast (an is each of the two
figures of .Justice and History) In a single
piece without a seam. This Is done by tlio
"wax molding process," which was n lost
art for U00 years, and Is now only practiced
at the Royal foundry at Homo and at one
lu Florence.
Mi It. II, Parks, the sculptor, worked
directly from the death mask and from
careful measurements of thu liody of tlio
Illustrious statesman, and after months of
work produced n cluy model that weighed
13,000 pounds. This was put through tlio
process alluded to, and tho result Is tlio
statue, weighing a ton and a half, which In
now being placed in position.
A RELIC OF HEROIC DAYS.

Stumllng at Moirlntiiun.
Three days after tho hattlu of Princeton
Washington entered Morristown, N. J.,
with his army On. .Ian. 7, 1777, hu made
his headquarters "at the Inn of Mr. Ar-

nold," mid there remained until May of the
same year. During that period the quaint
old tavern naturally liecamu tlm center of
Interest to the struggling Americans. The
buildlug still stands, but not on its origi
nal site. Some years ago when tlio struc
ture wan offered for salo, without tho land
on which it stood, Mrs. George W. Colles
liecamothu purchaser and removed It to
her own property, nearly a mile distant, at
a cost of 812,000. It eamo Into tho market
again the other day, was sold at auction
nnd its future existence is a matter of
doubt.
The building Is an Interesting relic of
the heroic days of the republic and ought
to Iki preserved. Washington's bedroom,
reception room and the famous ballroom
whore tho patriot warriors with their
wives and Hwcethearts danced tho stately
minuet are intact. Indeed, some small ex
penso for restoration of details would make
tho building Identical In appoaranco with
what It was 11 century ago.
Thu Proper Way to 11 1 Glutei.
A paper devoted to tho Interests of tho
dry goods trade declares that tho durabil
ity of kid gloves depends on how they nre
put on tho first time, and advises against
tho use of a stretcher. Tho expansion
should Iks mado by tho hands, so as to se
cure a perfect lit at every point. "Choose
gloves," saj8 tho writer, "thu lingers of
which correspond with yourown in length,
work in tho lingers first, then the thumb,
and finally smooth thom down until thoy
lit every part. A glove that fits well gen
erally w ears well. If tho ends do not come
down well, or If they are so long as to
wrlnklo, they will chafo out easily. When
fingers are so small iw to need tho stretcher,
the body of tho glove Is strained out In
drawing oer tho hand."
.V l'iMM't-iiiiiker' ltmiiiril.
"(letting 11 man out of a scrupu" is gen
erally a thankless job. If tho task Is under
taken for a monetary tonblderatlon the
troubles of the Kicemaker aro almost al
waja increased. Take, for example, tho
ease of Abraham Wehner, of N'ew York
city. Ho undertook to settle a breach of
promise suit brought against .John Fred
ericks, As tho result of Ids efforts a basis
of compromise was reached that Is, tho
plalntlir and defendant were married,
When Wehner asked a feu of tt for his
.' services Fredericks responded with a
punch 011 tho nose and tho renuirki "Take
I Unit. You didn't get mi out' of 11 r.crape,
but plntfil 1110 in a worso ona " Now moro
