number of elevators than Now York,
and St. Paul and Minneapolis together

Boston. This can bo easily explained.
It is not thnt tho peoplo of tho east are
moro fond of walking up stairs than
their friends of tho west, but that tlio
cities of tho latter region had their
growth chiefly after tho elovator had
assumed Its present importonco as a la
bor nnd tlmo saver. Now buildings in
tho west and theso western cltlos nro
largely composed of now buildings aro
arranged for ono or moro olovntors just
as they aio provided with roofB and
drainage. No longer Is tho elovator
looked upon as n luxury it Is n neces
sity. It was not so when tho vast ma
jority of structures in tho older cities
woro built, and theso anciont houses
wait and wait in vain for tho day when
tlio proprietors will seo it to their advan
tage to tear them down and rcplaco them
with modern structures, olovators and
all.

Chicago elevator. This is conceded by
all authorities, and nobody denies that it
Is in keeping with tho characteristics of
tho place, Chicago is a rapid town. Tho
olovator expert of tlio patent ofllco say
tlio avcrogo speed of Chicago "lifts" is
about 400 feet cr mlnuto, nearly all of
tho clovutora in tho largo blocks run
ning 500 feet n mlnuto or moro. In

less to say, however, that tho avorago
Chlcagoan likes his elevators, as every
thing else, about as fast as it is possiblo
for it to go.

sity of Washington, whero thero are
very fow elevators except thoso In the
government buildings. Nearly all of
theso aro as slow as mules. They creep
lazily up and down, tho doors aro opened
in a leisurely way by tho attendants and
nobody seems to bo in a hurry. This is

In western cities, whero doors aro opened
and closed with a snap nnd a bang irri
tating to tho nerves of timid passengers.

Fiold thcro aro two "lifts," both of them
beautiful pieces of machinery, and orna

is now tho iopular thing to havo n resi
dence elovator, with carved woods in
tho car, rich upholstering and nickel
plated cylinders. Even tho Whlto IIouso
has an elovator, though a very llttlo ono,
just largo enough for two persons to
squeeze in, nnd not two if they nro both
as fat ns President Cleveland was. Mr.
Cleveland, by tho way, is tho last man
that used this elovator, as it has not been
kept in running order siuco ho left the
White House. Thero is not much uso
for It at liest It was put in for the ac
comodation of Grandma Garfield, who
was too Infirm to walk upstairs, and
then tho nssassln Gultcau camo along
and spoiled Grandma's proposed visit to
her son. Tho elevator has been an un
lucky 0110 from tho start Two White
House employes havo been hurt by it,
and ono nearly lost his lifo.

car, upward or downward, actuates a
ventilating fan over tlio heads of tho pas
sengers In tho car. It ia a pity this do
vico U not moro generally applied, for
many elovator cabs aro uncomfortably
hot It might also bo a good idea to at
tach an automatic device to tho conduc
tor, to make suro that ho kecp3 awake.
Another novel Invention is that of a stair
way olovator, to bo applied to any flight
of stairs, tho car being drawn up tho in
cline on a llttlo railwny. A number of
patents cover do vices intended to tighten
or release chains attached to weights, so
that as passengers step off or on tho car
may bo always in a balance. Ono of
theso patents calls for no hoisting ma
chinery, tho plan being for tho conductor
to pull tho car up or down by grasping
tlio rope. Another requires a passenger
on entering tho car to tako therefrom a
weight about equal to his own avoirdu
pois and hang it upon a hook on tho outer
wall provided for tho purposo; on leaving
tho car ho must tako a weight from its
hook nnd place it in tho cab to preserve
the counterpoise. It is needless to ny
that this invention lias not como into
general use.
Hundreds of patents havo been taken
out on Bafety devices alone. Theso nro
nutomtitlo catches, electric brakes, air
cushions in which an elovator might fall
from a tenth story without hurting any
of Its occupants, safety doors which pro
ject over tho landing and mako it impos
tJblo for tho car to movo cither up or
down till tho doors uro closed, automatic
doors which push laggard passengers out
and in, and wedges which grip and tight
ly hold tho car tho instant tho rope
breaks.
It is worth while mentioning, too, that
tho elevator is an American institution.
If not originally invented here, it is here
that it bus had about all of its develop
ment, hero it has been brought to iu
'ligh state of perfection.
