D yrcnchcd to day on "Now Springs of Joy." Tlio text wits, "Thou hast pivon mo a south lnmltgivo mo nlso springs of water. Ami ho guvo her tlio upper springs, mid tho nether springs. Joslnmxv, 11). Tho city of Dcbir was tho Boston of nntiquity a great pltico for brain nml books. Caleb wanted it, and ho oll'or cd his daughter Achsah as a prizo to any ono who would capture that city. It was a strango thing for Caleb to iloj and yot tho man that could tnko tho city would have, at any rate, two olo incuts of manhood bravery and pa triotism. With Caleb's daughter as a prizo to fight for, Don. Othuiel rodo in to tho halt lo. Tho gates of Debir wcro thundered into tlio dust, and tlio city of books lay at tho feet of tho conquer ors. Tho work done, Othuiel comes back to claim his bride. Having con quered tho city, it is no great job for him to conquor tho girl's heart; for howovor faint hearten a woman licr Fclf may be, sho nlwuys loves counigo in a man. I novcr saw an exception to that. Tho wedding festivity having gone by, Othuiel and Achsah aro about to go to their now homo. How ever loudly tho cymbals may clash and tho laughter ring, parents aro al ways sad whon a fondly cherished daughter goes oil" to sUiy; and Ach sah. tho daughter of Caleb, knows that now is tho time to ask almost anything sho wants of her father. It beemsthat Caleb, tho good old man, had given as u wedding present to his daughter a picco of land that was mountainous, and sloping southward toward tin deserts or Arabia, swept with somo very hot winds. It was called "a south land." But Achsah wants an addition of property; sho wants a picco of land that is well watered and fertile. Now it is no wonder that Caleb standing amidst tho bridal party, his eyes so full of tears because sho was going away that ho could hardly see her at all, gives her moro than sho asks. Sho said to him: "Thou hast given mo a south land; givomonl.so springs of water. And ho gavo her tho upper bprings, and tho nether springs." aou has given ys tiik world. What a suggestivo passage! Tho fact is, that as Caleb, tho father, gavo Achsah, tho daughter, a south land, so God gives to us his world. I am very thankful ho has given it to us. But I am liko Achsah in tho fact that I want a larger portion. Trees, and ilowers. and grass, and bluo skies aro very well in their places; but ho who bus noth ing but this world for a portion has no Iiortiou at all. It is a mountainous and, sloping oft" toward tho desert of sorrow, swept by tlery siroccos; it is "a south land," a poor portion for any man that tries to put his trust in it. What has been your experience? What has been tho experience of every niah, of every woman that has tried this world for a portion? Queen Eliza beth, amidst tho surroundingsofpomn, is unhappy because tho painter sketch es too minutely tho wrinkles on her face, and sho indignantly cries out: "You must striko off my likeness without any shadows 1" Hogarth, at tho very height of hisartistictriumnh, is stung almost to death with cha grin becauso tho painting ho had dedi atcd to tho king docs not seem to bo acceptable; for Gcorgo II cries out: "Who is this Hogarth? Take his trum pery out of my presence." Brinsloy Sheridan thrilled tho earth with his eloquence, but had for his last words, "I am absolutely undone." Walter Scott, fumbling around tho inkstand, trying to write, saj-s to his daughter: "Oil, tuko mo back, to my room; thero is no rest for Sir Walter but in tho grave." Stephen Girard, tho wealth iest man in his day. or, at any rate, only second in wealth, says: "I live tho life of a galley slavo; when I ariso in tho morning my ono effort is to work so hard that 1 can sleep when it gets to bo night." Charles Lamb, ap plauded of nil tho worldt in tho very midst of his literary triumph says: "Do you remember, Bridget, when wo used to laugh from the shilling gallery at tho play? Thero aro now no good plays to laugh at from tho boxes." But why go so far as that? 1 used to go no further than your street to And an illustration of what I am saying. WOItLDLlNOS AIIE NOT HEALLY HAl'I'Y. Pick mo out ten successful world lingswithout any religion, and you know what I mean by successful worldlings pick mo out ton success ful worldlings, and you cannot find moro than ono that looks happy. Caro drags him across tho bridgo; caro drags him back. Tako your stand at two o'clock at tho corner of Nassau and Wall streets, or at tho corner of Canal btrcct and Broadway, and seo tho agonized physiognomies. Your bankers, your insurance men, your im porters, your wholesalers, and your retailers, as a class as a class, aro they happy? No. Caro dogs their steps; and, making no appeal to God for heln or comfort, they aro tossed every wither. How lias it been with you, my hearer) Aro you moro contented in the house of fourteen rooms than you were in tho two rooms you had in a houso when you started? Huvo you not had moro caro and worriment siuco you won that lifty thousand dollars than you did before? Somo of tho poorest men I huvo ever known havo been those of great fortune. A man of small means may bo put in great business straits, but tho ghast liest of all embarrassments is that of tho man who has largo estates. Tho men who commit suicido becauso of monetary losses aro thoso who can not bear tho burden any moro, be causo they havo only a hundred thou sand dollars left. On Bowling Green, Now York, i there is a houso whero Talleyrand used logo. Ho was a favorite man. All thoa world knew him, and ho had wealth almost unlimited; yot at tho closo of his lifo ho says: "Behold, clghty-threo years havo passed with out any practical result, savo fatiguo of body mid fatiguo of mind, greot discouragement for tho future and groat disgust for tho tmst." Oh, my friends, this is "a south land," and it slopes oil' toward desorts of sorrows; and tho prayer which Achsah mado to her father Caleb, wo make this day to our Father God: "Thou hast given mo a south land, givo mo nlso springs of water. And ho gnvo'them llio up per springs, and tho nether springs." Blessed bo God 1 Wo havo moro ad vantages given us than wo can really appreciate. Wo havo spiritual bless ings offered us in this world which I shall call tho nother springs, and glories in tho world to come which I shall call the upper springs. TIIK PUNK JOY OV HKUdlON. Whero shall I finds words enough threaded with light to set forth tho pleasure of religion? David, unable to describe it in words, plaved it on a harp. Mrs. Hemans, not finding en ough power in prose, sings that praise in a canto. Christopher Wren, un ablo to describe it in language, sprung it into the arches of St. Paul's, dohn Bunyan, unable to present it in or dinary phraseology, takes all tho fas cination of allegory. Handel, with ordinary umsio tumble to roach tho height of the theme, rouses it up in an oratorio. Oh, thero is no lifo on earth so happy as a really Christian life. 1 do not mean a sham Christian life, but a real Christian lifo. Where thero is n thorn, thero is a wholo garland of roses. Whero thero is ono groan, thero aro threo doxologies. Whero there is ono day of cloud, thero is a whoio season of sunshine. Tako the humblest Christian man that you know angels of God canopy iiini with their whito wings; tho lightnings of heaven aro his armed allies; tho Lord is his Shepherd, picking out for him green pastures by still waters; if ho walk forth, heaven is his body guard; if ho lie down to sleep, ladders of light, angel blossoming, are let into his dreams; if ho bo thirsty, tho potentates of heaven aro his cup bear ers: if ho sit down to food, his plain tablo blooms into tho Kimr's buna net. Men say: "Look at that old fellow with tlio worn out coat;" tho angels of God cry: "Lift up your heads, yo ev erlasting gates, aim ic Fastidious people, cry let him come in I" "Get off up front Btcns; ' tho doorkeepers of heav en cry: "Come, you blessed of iny Father, inherit tho kingdom 1" When ho comes to die, though ho may bo carried out in a pino box to tho potter's field, to that potter's Held the chariots of Christ will como down, and tho cavalcado will crowd all tho boule vards of heaven. IT MAKES A MAN "ALIj UlCIIIT." I bless Christ for tho present satis faction of religion. It makes n man all right with refcrenco to tho past; it makes a man all right with refcr enco to tho future. Oil theso nether springs of comfort I Thoy aro peren nial. Tho foundation of God stand cth sure having this seal, "Tho Lord kiioweth them that aro his." "Tho mountains shall depart and tho hills bo removed, but my kindness bliull not depart from thee, neither shall tho covenant of my pcaco bo removed, saith tho Lord, who hath mercy upon them." Oh, cluster of diamonds set in burnished gold! Oh. nether springs of comfort bursting through all tho valleys of trial and tribulation) When you see, you of tho world, what satis faction thero is on earth in religion, do you not thirst after it as the daughter of Caleb thirsted after tlio water springs? It is no stagnant pond, scummed over with malaria, but springs of water leaping from tho Hock of Ages I Tako up one cup of that spring water, and across tho top of tho chalice will float tho delicate shadows of tho heavenly wall, tho yel low of juscr, tho green of emerald, tho bluo of Bardonyx, tho flro of jacinth. HAPPY IN LIKE AND GLAD IN DEATH. I wish 1 could mako you understand tho joy religion is to somo of us. It makes a man happy whilo ho lives, and glad when ho dies. With two feet upon a chair and bursting with dropsies, I heard an old man in tho poor house cry out: "Bless tho Lord, oh my soul 1" I looked around and said : "What has this man got to thank God for?" It makes tho lamo inim leap liko tho hart, and tho dumb sing. Thoy say that tho old Puritan religion is a juiceless and joyless religion ; but I rcmcmlicr reading of Dr. Goodwin, tho celebrated Puritan, who in his last moments said: "Is this dying? Why, my bow abides in btreng'thl I am swallowedup in God." "Her wnys aro ways of pleasantness, and all her paths aro peace." Oh, you who have been trying to satisfy yourselves with tho "south lund"of this world, do you not feel that you would, this morning, liko to havo access to tho nether springs of spiritual comfort? Would you not liko to havo Jesus Christ bend over your cradlo und bless your table and heal your wounds, and strew Ilowers of consolation all up and down tho graves of your dead? TU religion that can giro Bwectewt pleasure nhC we Iltr; 'Tin religion can supply K wet-lent comfort hen no die. But I havo something better to tell you, suggested by this text. It seems that old father Caleb on tho wedding day of his daughter wanted to mako her just as happy as possible. Though Othuiel was taking her away, and his heart was almost broken because sho was going, yet ho gives her a "south laud ;" not only that, but tho nether springs; not only that, but the upper springs. 0 God, my Father, I thank tlico that thou hast given mo a "south land" in this world, and tho nether springs of spiritual comfort in this world; but, moro than all, I thank theo for tho upper springs in heaven. THE CU.OH1E8 OK HEAVEN. It is very fortunate wo cannot bco heaven until wo get into it. Oh, Christian man, if you could see what a place it is, wo would never get you back again to tho olllco or store or bhop, and tho duties you ought to por form would go neglected. I am glad I bhall not see that world until I enter it. Suppose wo wcro allowed to go on an excursion into that good land with tho idea of returning. When wo ,got 1 "' " '" IHIimiipiWHI IIIIIMWIIIBWI Ill .IHIMBMWlWUWnrtip.l-vt .nvn, wv- CAPITAB CITY COURIER, there, and heard tlio song, and looked at their raptured faces, and mingled in tho sui-erual society, we would nry out: "liOt.us stay! Wo aro coming hero anyhow. Why tako tho trouble of going back again to that old world? We lire hero now; let us stay." And It would take angelic violen'eo to put us out of that world, if miico wo got thero. But as peoplo who cannot af ford to pay for anentertaiiinientsomo times come around it and look through tho door ajar, or through tho openings in tho fence, so wo come and look through tho crevices in that good laud which God has provided for us. Wo can just catch a glimpsoof it. Wocomn near enough to hear the rumbling of tlio eternal orchestra, though not near enough to know who blows the cornet or who lingers tho harp. My soul spreads out both wings mid claps them in triumph at tho thought of thoso up per springs. Ono of them breaks from beneath tho throno; another breaks forth from beneath tho altar of tho temple; another at tho door of "tho houso of many mansions." Upper springs of gladness I Upper springs of lightl Upper springs of lovel It is no fancy of mine. "Tho Ijimb which is in the midst of tho throno shall lead them to living fountains of water." Oh, Saviour divine, roll in upon our soulsonoof those anticipated raptures! Pour around the roots of tlio patched tongue one drop of that litiuid lifol Toss beforo our vision those fountains of God, raiubowed with eternal vic tory. Hear it. Thoy aro never sick thero; not so much as a headache, or twingo rheumatic, or thrust neuralgic. The inhabitant novcr says: "I am sick." They aro never tired there. Flight to farthest world is only tho play of a holiday. They never sin treat city not ono placo whero tho ground was broken for a grave. Tho eyesight of tlio redeemed is never blurreu with (earn. Thero is health in every cheek. Thero is spring in every foot. There is majesty on every brow. Thero is joy in every heart, Thero is hosauiia on every lip. How thoy must pity us ils thoy look over mid down and seo lis, and say: "Poor things away down in that world." And when some Christian is hurled into a fatal inci dent, thoy cry: "Good! ho is coin ing!" And when wo stand around tho conch of somo loved ono (whoso strength is going away) and wo bhako our heads forebodingly, they cry: "I am glad ho is worse; ho has been down thero long enough. There, ho is dead! Coiuuhoine! Come homo!" Oh, if wo could only get our ideas about that fiituro world untwisted our thought of transfer from hero to there would bo as pleasant to us as it was toa littlo child that was dying. Sho said: 'Papa, when will I go homo?" And ho said: "Today, Florence." "Today? So soon? I am so glad!" THE DAY OK DELIVEKANCE IH COMINp. I wish I could stimulato you with these thoughts, oh Christian man. to tho hithest possible exhilaration. Tho day of your deliverance is coming, is coming. It is rolling on with the shining wheels of tho day. and tho jet wheels of tho night. Every thump of tho heart is only a hammer stroke striking oil" another chain of clay. Better scour tho deck und coil the ropo, tho harbor is only six miles away. Jesus will como down in tho "Nar rows" to meet you. Now is your sal vation nearer thun when you believed. Un forgiven man, unpardoned man, will you not today mako a choice be tween theso two portions, between tho "south land" of this world, which slopes to tho desert, and this glorious land which thy Father offers thee, running with eternal water courses? Wliy let your tongue bo consumed with thirst when thero aro the nether springs and the upper springs, comfort here, und glory hereafter? Let mo tell you, my dear brother, that tho silliest and wickedest thing a man over docs is to reject Jesus Christ. Tho loss of the soul is a mistake that cannot bo corrected. It is a downfall that knows no alleviation ; it is a ruin that is remediless; it is a sickness that has no medicament; it is a gravo into which a man goes but .never conies out. Therefore, putting my hand on your shoulder us ono brother puts his liunil on tho shoulder of a brother, 1 say this day, bo manly, and surrender your heart to Christ, You havo been long enough serving the world ; now begin to servo tho Lord who bought you. You havo tried long enough to carry theso burdens; let Jesus Christ nut his shoulder under your burden. Do I hear any ono in the audience bay : "I mean to attend to that after awhile; it is not just tho timo?" It is tho time, for tho simple reason that you aro suro of no other; nnd God sends you hero this morning, and ho sent mo hero to confront you with this mes sage; and you must hear now that Christ died to savo your soul, and that if you want to be saved you may bo saved. "Whosoever will, let him come." You will never find any moro convenient season than this. Some of you havo been waiting ten, twenty, thirty, forty, lifty and sixty years. On botno of you tho snow has fallen. I seo it on your brow, mid yet you havo not attended to thoso duties which belong to tho very springtime of lifo. It is Soptember with you now, it is October with you, it is 'De cember with you. I am no alarmist. I simply know this: if a man does not repent in this world ho never re pents at all, and that now is tho no cepted time, and now is tho day of salvation. Oh, put oil' this matter no longer. Do not turn your back on Jesus Clirist who comes to savo you, lest you should lose your soul. On Monday morning a friend of inino started from New York to celo orate her birthday with her daughter n Virginia. On Saturday of tho saino week, just after sunrise, I stood at tho L'ttto of Greenwood waiting for her si lent form to como in.
