IN THE SOCIAL SWIM.
A WEEK'S HAPPENINGS CHRONICLED.
Account! of 1U1U, l'Nrtlr, Wedding

MIs Fiinkn's German.
Tlio ribbon german given Monday evening
by Miss Funko was a brilliant nlTnlr, n fitting
crown to the social season, Thirty-two couple
hnd been Invited to participate In the dancing
and tlio host hit upon the happy Idea of
using her father's opera house. This gave
tlio affair nn nlrof homone, If n word may
le coined far tlio occasion, and gave the
guests tlio advantage of a hall . These ml van
tages will Ims obvious to any who liavo taken
part in germans in private residences In
which tlio coinimny were crowded Into one
room uncomfortably small, or scntteied
through two or more rooms and so cut off
from swing half tlio figure. Funke's opera
houso wa sjieclally put In onler for tlio own
ilou and was found to Ixt admirably adapted
for Its purpose. Tlio lloor of the stago was
planed nml waxed Into n surprisingly good
dancing surface, Tlio scenery was arranged
around threo aides, successfully hiding tlio
bare wall. Tlio grand central chandelier
waa aided mid abetted by tlio footlights, tlio
1oi jets nml n chandelier nbovo tlio dancer
In flooding stage and auditorium with cheery
radiance. To tlio favored spectators' In tlio
bones and tlio boily of tlio house the gay sccno
framed by the proscenium arch was lienutl
fully effective, brilliant and unique. The ar-
riving guest were treated to u surprise at the
very threshold of the house, tlio large foyer
having been transformed with nrtistlo inge
nuity, In tlio renter of tlio floor wa n foun
tain, Whence the water enmo or whither It
went wa n mystery, but during tlio entlro
evening it burst from tlio fouutnln nozzle nnd
fell In 11 gentlo spray upon th'i nick below.
Around tlio Inner circle of the basin wa n
row of geranium and flowering plant, whilo
palm, Kitted plants mid vases of cut flower
scnttteroil about tlio foyer gave It tlio pleas
lug semblance of n conservatory. Upholstered
chairs and sofas hero and there made It an In
viting retreat, and during the several inter
missions it was thronged with the happy,
chatting dancers, who were deftly served by
n coris ot colored waiters with Ices, cakes and
lemon frnppe.
Tlio guests wero received by Mis Funko in
tlio foyer, n pleasing duty in which Mr nml
Mr. Fred Funko, her purouts.asslsted. Mis
Funko made a gracious, tactful host, with
n pervading prciwneo that wa charming.
Tlio dancing did not begin until halt-past
nlno o'clock nnd continued until after one.
The program comprised twelve figure, a fol
lows: Star and clrclo, eccentric column, fife
orchestra, angling, opjxwta rounds, column
reversed, military, screen, doublo column,
augmented wind-mill, tournament nnd quad
ruple quadrlllo. There were eight favor fig
ure. In six tlio favors wero ribbon, each
hnnd-palnted with the name of tho giver. It
required nearly four hundred favor of till
kind, which will undoubtedly be cherished to
stir up reminiscent memories In tho years to
come. Tho favors in tho other two figure
wero bows nnd arrow, oars crossed, hoes,
rakes nnd spade, all made in bent wood. In
three ot tho figures tho effect was heightened
by the use ot properties. In tho angling tig.
ure the gentlemen were provided with fish
ing rod and lines and secured their partners
by throwing their lines over a screen among
the ladles concealed behind, each ot whom
danced with tho gallant whoe line slio
grasped. In the screen figure was a screen
frame with portlerres in the panels. In ft ont
of each panel stood a gentleman, nnd on the
other side ot nil panels but ono was p lady.
As the fair ones parted their portlerres and
waltsed off with the partners they found in
waiting, of course one gentleman wa left to
take his seat in confusion. The tournament
figure brought two sets ot gentlemen face to
face ns tho claimants for tl)o company of one
sot of ladles. A cavalier in one party chal
lenged n cavalier in the other by throwing
down his glove. The two wereprovlded w Ith
masks and foil, the tatter's tip covered with
chalk, and they npjiealed to the sword. Tho
knights whose champion won the bout, which
was decided by tho appearance of n chalk
mark on hts opponent, danced off with tho
ladye falrc, while the dlscomlltted gentlemen
retired with such grace as they could com
mand. Tho gerniau wa led by Lieut T. W. Grif
fith, U.S. A., who is stationed In Lincoln a
military instructor for the State University.
The leader had the tact, skill, patience and
self-abnegation so necessary for this post ot
