A Poem
From Mrs. Eby ...
The Frontier
Taking Out Supposes
An old colored lady at hard labor
there,
Earned a very precarious living
and fare.
But was a happy triumphant
Christian they say.
Oh Nancy! said a gloomy lady
to her one day.
It’s fine to be happy tis true, but
thoughts of the future should
sober you.
Suppose yda’d be sick and could
n’t work or old and gray,
Or perchance your employer
should move away.
Maybe no one would give you any
thing to do.
Or suppose! suppose your labor
ing days are through.
Oh! “Stop cried Nancy”, I never
suppose.
The Lord is my Shepherd and
I always know.
That I shall not want and “Hon
ey” to her gloomy friend,
Them supposes make you mis
erable to the end,
Better give them up and trust
the Lord.
In their place just put the bless
ed word.
The verse in Hebrews takes them
out of your life,
And supposes just die in the
midst of strife.
That verse in Hebrews I am talk
ing about,
Just keeps me happy and makes
supposes rout.
Hebrews 13, 5:6. Be content with
such things as ye have,
For He hath said, “I will never
leave thee nor forsake thee
And that includes me.
