ROBERT E. MILLER Chairman 47c Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, The legal voters of the Inman School District are taking a straw vote this week to help de termine the future of their school. They will be voting on the four possible solutions as present ed by Mel Olson, State Depart ment of Education. These four possible solutions have been pre viously publicized. A fifth alter native needs serious considera tion by all legal voters in the Inman district before they vote on the four proposals. This fifth solution would be the legal for mation of a Class VI school such as is now being formed by a | group of districts around Grand Island and Cozad. A vote to join a K-12 district could close the door permanent ly to the many advantages of a Class VI district. Many residents of nearby high schools and Class I rural schools are considering the advantages of a Class VI school. As Inman goes, so may all the surrounding area be forrc ed to go. Here are some of the facts in ■ Charolais and Charolais Cross BREEDING STOCK SALE Saturday, March 23 - 12:30 p.m. ATKINSON LIVESTOCK MARKET Atkinson, Nebraska Offering 72 head. Bulls 3A to Purebred. Four or more adjoining school districts may unite for the purpose of forming one high school district su perinvpoaed over the par ticipating districts. 2. It is formed upon petition of 55% of the legal voters residing in such districts. 3. Petitions to be presented to the county superintendent or superintendents, as such a district may cross county lines. 4. The district shall be gov erned by a board of educa tion elected from the enure district and shall be organ ised and have the same duties as a board of educa tion in class 2 high school districts. 5 Such district can be discon tinued by 55% of the legal voters voting at an annual or special meeting providing notice has been given. 6. Class VI district can become a junior-senior high district by a 55% "yes” vote of le gal voters voting at an an nual or special meeting providing notice has been given. 7. Approximately 20 such dis tricts are now in existence in Nebraska, and others are in the process of formation. The average mill levy for operating Class VI schools in Nebraska is around 10 mills. B. The approximate present val uation of the schools in the east ern Holt codnty area are: Inman $ 952,000.00 Free High District 170,000 00 Total $1,122,00000 Page 962,000.00 Free High District 920,000.00 Total 1,882,000 00 Ewing 1,353,000.00 Free High District 1,417,000 00 Total 2,770,000.00 Orchard 1,800,000.00 Free High District 350,000.00 j Total 2,150,000.00 Grand Total approx 7,924,000.00 O’Neill evaluation is approxi mately $5,100,000. O’Neill could become the cen ter of a Class VI school district. Many other county seat towns have seen the advantage of such an arrangement. C. Major advantages of such a district: 1. It guarantees local control of the grade school which joining a K-12 district can not do. A local grade school would be operated by a lo cal board of education elect ed by the people of the grade school district. Such a district could provide bus transportation and noon lunch facilities. 2. It guarantees a voice in the education of our high school children, for a board of ed ucation is elected from the superimposed high school district to operate the Class VI high school. This would give more voice than a city K-12 district would give. 3. This high school district has l the authority to provide transportation and a noon lunch program for the stu denu of the district which a K 12 district docs not have to provide. High school stu dents could live at home and thus help preserve fam ily life in the home and permit participation in the local community activities Ruses could run from the elementary school to the high school. t The program of school ac tivities would be geared to rural living rather than to. city life. Thus the children could take more advantage of the enlarged educational I opportunity than they could if they were a part of a j K 12 district geared to city 5 life. 5 instances for each individu al rural family to drive to attend « c h o ol activities would not be so great ns they would be if the district should become a part of a city K-12 district Provision could be made for releas ing certain portions of a district which were closer to another high school center if the patrons so desired. 6. A very carefully prepared course of study could be made available to each grade district by the sup erintendent of the central high school. Each district could have representation on a committee for the pur pose of correlating all of the activities of the various schools involved 7. The high school pupils from one grade school would all attend the same high high school, thus helping to strengthen the local com munity. The individual parents would not be put in a position whereby they might have to beg some high school to educate their children as is the case with some districts now 8. The individual student could haw all of the advantage* in a Claaa VI high school which arc offered him in a K 12 diatrict. *jch *a a broader course of study, musk, dramatic*, s com plete phya. ed. program and an opportunity ta as sociate ami work with aui d<*nta from other com muni Uea.
