A Poem
From Mrs. Eby ..,
—If Christ Had Not Come—
A weary pastor fell asleep in his
study there, and dreamed a
dream he found hard to de
clare.
He dreamed of the world if
Christ had not come, no little
stockings on the fire place
would be hung, no gifts, wrea
thes and bells by loved ones
given, no Christ to gladden
comfort and save. He went out
on the street but no churches
appeared, back in his study all
books about Jesus had disap
peared.
The door bell rang and a caller
asked, would he come, his mo
ther was dying and needed
some one. He opened his Bible
to look for a comforting
thought, but it ended with ma
lachi, no gospel, no promise it
brought, no primise of hope, no
salvation was there, all he
could do was weep and join in
her bitter despair.
Two days later he conducted the
funeral rite, no message of
comfort, though he tried with
all his might, only dust to dust
and ashes to ashes and an eter
nal farewell. If Christ hadn’t
come there was no comforting
promise to tell. He suddenly
awoke with a shout of joy, as
he heard singing in the church
by a chapel boy.
Oh come all Ye Faithful, Come
let us Adore Him, the words
he heard, I bring you good tid
ings, for unto you is born a
Savior, Christ the Lord. Then
he started and struggled wide
awake, to keep, for Jesus had
come and he’d been asleep.
