Telephone Tax Averages $3.30 For Each Phone A check for $10,076.84 is being delivered to the County Treasurer for payment of the first half of the 1962 personal property taxes, according to C. R. Alexander, manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company here. The total telephone taxes amount ed to an average of $3.30 per month per telephone for every Northwestern Bell telephone in Nebraska. This is an increase, from taxes alone, of 85c per month per telephone compared with the total tax of only $2.45 per month per telephone in 1950. “No other comparable essential local utility service carries so heavy and discriminatory a tax bill,” Mr. Alexander explained. “Other essential public services such as electricity, gas, water and local transportation do not have any Federal Excise Tax. The 10% Federal Excise Tax which still applies to local and long distance telephone service is much the same as that on cer tain luxuries, actually at the same rate as furs and jewelry. This was supposedly an emer gency war-time tax to hold down nonessential calls during World War H." Manager Alexander pointed out that the Northwestern Bell's total tax bill for all kinds of taxes in Nebraska in 1961 was more than $9,615,000 and that our telephone customers in this state paid $3,326,000 in addition in telephone Federal Excise Tax, making a total of over $12,941,000. This amounted to an average of $3.30 per telephone per month.
