Ewing Alumni Banquet Honors Class of 1937 EWING — The anual alumni banquet of the Ewing high school was held Thursday evening at the auditorium with about 170 persons in attendance. The theme was “How Bright The Moon.” Walter Miller, gave the invocation, Roger Bennett, Or chard, the welcome, and Larry Noffke, the response. Dr Vernon Rockey, Crawford, w'as toastmaster. Numbers on the program were "Quiet Fran grance”, Vivian Wright Bartos; Duet, “Wondrous Night of Love" by Ardis Parks and Patricia Hobbs; Solo “Star Dust” by Bob Koenig; “Whispering Breezes” Garry Eacker, honoring the class of 1937; “Meandering Moon beams” by Charles Rotherham, member of the Board of Educa tion, honoring the class of 1962; solo “I Saw A Star” by Sandra Shrader; solo “Evensong" by Supt. Dr. Nickolas J. Sojka has been appointed to the staff of Duke University Medical Center, Dur ham, N. C. as Assistant Director of laboratory Animal Medicine. Dr. Sojka graduated from Kan sas State University in 1958. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sojka, Page. St. Boniface Open House Held May 12 Open house was held at the new St. Boniface school Satur day, May 12, for sisters from var ious Nebraska missions, including Snyder, Fremont, Olean, Elgin, and Atkinson. A dinner, prepared by officers of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Boniface parish was serv ed to twenty-two sisters, includ ing the local sisters of 9t. Boni face school, in the recreation room of the new school. Ocher guests at the dinner were Father Lane from Arizona, for mer pastor of Epiphany church at Emmet, Elizabeth Paschang, Phyllis Kaup and Sharon Olber ding. Atkinson, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kreikemeier, Snyder. In spite of the short notification and distances involved, the local sisters were well pleased with the number attending. Following the dinner the visit ing sisters enjoyed a tour through the school. Former Resident Dies In Bellingham, Wash. Word has been received of the death of Jens S. Johnson, 79, Bellingham, Wash. Jens was a former resident of the O'Neill area. He died Saturday. June 2. Burial was in Bellingham Tues day. He is survived by his widow. Sophia, and five sisters. Cora Claussen, Christina Johnson, O’ Neill. Esther Harding. Sloan. Ia.. Emma Claussen. Artesia. Calif., and Anna Harding. New Mexico. Children's Home Asks For Trading Stamps Mem tiers of the Simonson Post 83 of the O’Neill American Le gion Auxiliary have tieen asked by the head of the state home for retarded children in Beatrice to contribute Gold Bond stamps for ti>e {Hirpose of securing a merri-go-round for the home. Their goal is 950 points. Anyone wishing to contribute stamps may contact Mrs. John Dewitt. Services Held At Verdigre for Frank J. Kurka Funeral rites were held for Frank J. Kurka. a Knox county pioneer. May 31 at the ZCBJ hall with the Rev. David T Gustaf son officiating. Mrs. Eldiva Jed licka Pavlik and Mrs. Joe Jacot jr. sang, accompaniixl by Mrs. Emil E. Sandoz. Palbearers were Fred May, John Sukup, Walter Sukup, Adolph Sukup and Ed ward Tusha. Interment was at Niobrara in the Le’Qui C'urt cemetery, where his parents were buried. Frank J. Kurka. son of Joseph and Theresa Kurka, was Ixirn September 11, 1881, at Dukeville, Nebr.. and died in the Creighton hospital May 28 at the age of 80. November 16, 1903, lie was mar ried to Rose Marshall. They had two children, a son Wenzel and a daughter, Rose, Mrs. Earl Cros ley, Niobrara. In 1916 his wife died. He con tinued to live on the farm and in 1927 married Julia Roubal. In 1928 they left the farm and mov ed to Verdigre where they lived until his death. Mr. Kurka had been in failing health the past year. He is survived by his wife, Julia, his two children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one brother, Er nest, Verdigre and three sisters, Bertha Tusha, Rose (Mrs. Max Randal, Verdigre and Julia iMrs. John Sukup i. Creighton, a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one half brother and four half sisters and two infant brothers. Rites Held for Maude Stephens At Orchard Maude B. Stephens, 85, died Sunday, May 27, in the Neligh rest home after a lingering ill ness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 29 at Orchard in the EUB church. The Rev. Lenz officiated. Pallbearers were her grandson, Dwaine Williamson, Larry D. Williamson, Richard Lee and Mike Williamson, neph ews, Roy Bouermeister and Dave Bouermeister. Maude B. Spencer was bom June 15, 1889,, in Shelby County Iowa to Thomas and Josephine Spencer, one of six children. Her early life was spent in Gregory, S. D., Sholes and Beemer. Nebr. She was married to Orie H. Ste phens March 23, 1910 at Beemer and to this union 4 children were born. She and Orie lived near Creighton and Brunswick for sev eral years and in Orchard for ten years before moving to Vcrdel where they spent most of their life on the farm. They retired and moved to Ewing about five years ago. Survivors include her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Elmer William son, Orchard, a son, Jim. Rites Held for Mrs. Fred Sfolle At Atkinson ATKINSON Funeral rites for Mrs. Fred Stolte, 79, Atkinson, who died May 27, were held May 30 at the Seger Funeral Home and St. John's Lutheran Church. Rev.
