Verdigre Hawks Have Impressive Season VERDIGRE — The Verdigre Hawks ended their basketball season this year with 20 wins, 6 losses and 2 tournament crowns and three tourney places. They were district champions and Corntassel Conference tour ney they took second place and were co-champions with Spen cer in the NVC conference. They were third place winners of the Knox county tournament. O'Neill Eagles Rated Second in Class C The O’Neill Eagles received a second place position in the final ratings of Class C by Conde Sar gent, Lincoln Star high school sports writer. City_Zone_State_ Atkinson Girls Win Volleyball Tourney Atkinson took the championship of the girl's volleyball tournament in the Three Rivers conference played Tuesday, March 6, at At kinson. Second place went to Stuart and Springview had third place. Each school received a trophy. Also taking part in the tourney were Butte, Spencer and Ewing. WHOOPS! Mrs. Carl Schmiii invited in several friends to help Mrs. Bud Tibbetts celebrate her birthday. The party was complete with all Uw* necessary goodies and the hostess was even more gen erous. She presented the cake to (he guest of honor to take home. Didn't quite work out that way, though, because in turn ing to hand her the cake, it sUp|M‘d off the platter and land ed at the feet of the honored guest. DeBolt at tended funeral services at New port Friday for her aunt, Mrs. Anna Keebaugh, 87, who died Tuesday, Mar. 6., at the Bassett hospital. Mrs. Keebaugh, a life-long res ident of Newport, had suffered from a long illness. Alex Lichty Dies Following Heart Attack ROYAL — A heart attack while shoveling snow Monday caused the death of a well known Royal farmer, Alex Lichty, 84. Mr. Lichty and his wife cele brated their 65th wedding anni versary August 30, 1961. Funeral arrangements have j not yet been announced due to the condition of the snow-block roads Wednesday. Alex Lichty resided 57 years on the same farm near Royal, having moved there in 1904. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Harmon, Elmer and Perry; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three bro thers and on sister. Services Pending for David McClatchy Funeral services are pending for David McClatchy, formerly of Oakdale, who died Wednesday morning, Mar. 14, at the home of his half-sister, Mrs. Ernest Durre, southeast of Chambers. The services will be under the direction of Biglins Funeral Home. Former Pastor Dies In Eads, Colorado Word has been received here from Mrs. William I. Bell tell ing of the death of her husband March 9 at Eads, Colo. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Eads for the Rev. Bell, former pastor of the First Presbyterian church at O’Neill in 1939-40. Census Report On Housing Units Received Holt county had 4,497 housing units when the 1960 census of housing was taken, and of this number, 4,096 were occupied 1 ttving 401 empty buildings. There were 1,184 renters and 2,912 home owners. Rentals av eraged $61 and the average val ie of the owner-occupied places was $6,400. Sound plumbing was found in 2,941 homes and 3,331 had flush toilets and 3,300 homes had bath tubs or showers. There were 2,452 houses with basements. Two hundred and seventy-two air conditioned houses were count ed and there were 2,597 homes with television, 3,849 with radios and 3,073 having telephones. The washing machine count was 3,686 and the clothes dryer total was 803. Food freezers totaled 1,625. Holt residents with one auto mobile in the family numbered 2,427. There were 1,116 families with two automobiles and 80 with 3 or more. It isn't too late to participate in the 1962 Feed Gram Signup In Holt county this began Febrj ary 26 and will continue through March 30 A total of $46,408.12 has been paid to farmers in ihe county as advance on payments that will be earned by putting the diverted acreage into approved conserva tion uses. Farmers who iwrtlci pate in the program may re ceive up to about half of the to tal payment at the time of sign up. The advance payment features of the program are designed to boost the farmers' cnsh-in-p>cket at u time of year when his ex penditures are likely to be hea vy and his income less than at harvest time Most of this money is spent locally by farm families, so the “advance payment” fea ture also bennefits local mer chants and farm machinery and seed dealers. The 1962 FG program is similar in operation to last year’s pro gram.
